I'm seriously considering the same pathway you took to an Architecture Degree, except the Diploma will be in KL campus. Care to share your experience, give some advice to a junior maybe? I went for the Diploma interview already and the results should be out early May.I can't decide between an overseas course or a local one. Several architects I spoke to all encourage me to go abroad. I need some feedback from someone who studied locally. Did you gain advance entrance into 3rd year Degree after Diploma? Is this way surer, faster or dare I say, easier? Compared to STPM followed by 5 years degree? Read some not so good reviews about UTM Space Architecture programme. Will the Diploma be managed and taught any better?

Saw from your profile that you're in Diploma Senibina. I got into this year's Senibina batch at KL campus. Is it compulsory for all 1st year students to live on campus? Even if they are from KL/Selangor? Where's the hostel?
Heard there are about 30 students each intake. Are you in 2nd or 3rd year now?
Any advice you can offer a junior?
Thanks.

hey there biggrin.gif, firstly congrats to you rclxms.gif

yeah its compulsory for first year to stay in the campus/kolej siswa jaya...even the seniors have to stay in campus with the new rules around...but for really solid reason they will allow u to stay outside, let say ur house is just around the campus i think they will give permission....

but my advice to you for first year it is better for you to staywith ur studio peers ,then u get to know ur studio mates better and u can get along very well..after all ur studio mates will be like ur family after a long time u spend together..

actually it doesnt matter where ur staying at,because u will be in the studio like 24/7...like us we just going back to our room to take bath and sleep (if we have free nights)  nod.gif

the hostel is at Jalan rejang 4,around setapak...it is quite far from the campus....we need to take bus to campus...and it will be a bonus if u have ur own transportation because..during weekend there is no bus around...and the last bus every night is at 10.30 pm....

yeah the maximum is 30 person per batch,my batch have the most student,28 and the rest around 20++....next sem i will start my 2nd year...

advice?hmmm...while in the holidays try to make ur fundamentals stronger..as in basic drawing...it will help u alot later  icon_idea.gif

anyway gudluck to you...feel free to pm me...looking foward to meet you later... thumbup.gif

On my surat tawaran it says kediaman siswa Semarak. Is this on campus? Aiyo, my house is in Ampang, does that mean have to stay in for three years? Are they very strict at the hostel?

Yeah I am quite aware about the sleepless nights etc...

Actually I am out of the country now, in France on a 6 month student exchange programme. I took two weeks break and flew back for the UTM and JPA interviews. One of my interviewers was a Nigerian lecturer who spoke French to me. Luckily could answer otherwise koyak. Now I'm still waiting for JPA results to be out. Applied for Senibina also.

My programme only finishes on 11 July. Coming home straight and arriving at KLIA 13 July. But I'm told to mendaftar on 4 July. Do you think UTM will allow a late registration for valid reasons? I'm just getting all my paperwork in order before I approach them ( my parents will have to go on my behalf) to ask for permission to register on the 13th. Do I write to Hal Ehwal Pelajar office about this?

Well, I like doodling... mostly floral stuff, can't seem to get started on the scenery or building sketches. I took PSV and LK for SPM. Will this help?

Thanks for all the info.

not very strict yo but better keep ur room tidy and clean since felo like to check2 every morning (unless u lock the door and and dead sleep) laugh.gif

Sorrylah bro, I'm a girl. I guess that wipes out the room-mate idea. Are there normally two to a room? Do we room in with seniors of the same course?
Are you in Senibina as well? Which year?

about the registration, just give them a call or u can ask them the direct number for the head of department for architecture....im sure they doesnt mind...make sure u inform them...and just write a letter and bring it during the registration...

The head of Dept in Johor or in KL? I was told to approach Pn Latipah in KL campus about students' intake.

Eh, majority boys ah in Senibina? When I went for the interview it was like 75% male applicants. How about the yearly intake?
JPA results should be out next week, latest 21 July. I'll wait till then before I approach the Faculty.

Either way also I'll be doing Architecture so I'm not so worried about the outcome.

Dont worry lah,the intake for boys and girl are equally balance in this course biggrin.gif ....my batch have 15 guys and 13 girls...that is close to 50/50...but some courses do have 2 or 1 girl per class over 36 boys haha...

so there is plenty amoi in this course  rclxm9.gif

OK Thanks for the info. BTW, how's the course? Interesting, challenging, harder than SPM? From what I read in your posts looks like you have no regrets taking this. That's good cause I need all the encouragement I can get. Do you get to choose electives or subjects? Or are you supposed to take everything offered? How's the practical or studio work? Are the lectures all in English? After 4 months away my BM has really gone down the drain. Another 1.5 months it's gonna be worse.

I would be lying if i say the course is easy...Its far far challenging from spm....

regrets?hahaha we all do feel regrets sometime...but its the passion that make u want to go further  tongue.gif

the subjects given are compulsory...studio is the main core for our course, its consist of half the total credit hours,it will totally drag or rise ur pointer drastically ...

mainly the lectures are in english..but it depends on the lecturer and the subject.....studio mainly are in english but a little bit of bahasa here and there wont hurt anyone rite  biggrin.gif hahahha both language are important...depends on which one you comfortable with...
*
How are credit hours counted? You mean you get points for just being in the studio for a certain no of hours regardless of your hasil kerja? Do you clock in or something? Or is the lecturer always around to take attendance?

What are the lecture hours like? Does the whole class of around 30 students attend studio together?

How many subjects are there in total?

Sorry to bombard you with so many questions at one go.

haha i think u get me wrong there, studio means design class,if u get bad result for design the it will effect your pointer...no lah you can choose either to work in studio or at home/room,but its better to work at the studio,u can get plenty of thing when u are in studio(seniors, friends, lecturer)and some lecturer stayed back to help us in our design, that's why staying at the studio is important, learn to work in group, share ideas and plenty more...

for first year it is crucial to stay at studio because u need to learn many things from senior, lecturer will not spoon feed you just like in school,u need to learn basic stuff like shading, rendering, drawing, colouring mostly u can learn from ur senior, but some things the lecturer will teach you,if u are lucky tongue.gif

for first year first sem if i was not mistaken,my time there is 5 subject, design is the core subject while other like building services, structure are elective..there are compulsory subject such as Tamadun Asia  and Hubungan Etnik that every student have to take..

yerp the studio is for 30 people,u will have ur own drafting table, personal desk and space to work and the lecturer will come during studio hours which is 8-5 on monday and thursday, and have a critiques session with the student, presentation will be held during studio hours also, and design is your main subject, the heart of the course, all your other subject will influence your design, not like in school where all subject equal the same..

lecturer will take your attendance, and crit session with lecturer are very important,(attendance)they can fails you if your attendance is not so good eventhough your design is a masterpiece...and dont forget design is a subjective subject, all the mark depends on the 3 lecturer in the studio, one will be the the head of the studio, which we call studio master biggrin.gif

hope this will help you, laugh.gif

Yes, it really helps to have a clear picture of what lies ahead. thumbup.gif

Very nervous now... JPA results coming out tomorrow. sweat.gif Don't really know what to wish for as the Diploma in UTM now sounds so appealling.

By the way, how's the crime rate on campus? I heard of laptop and handphone thefts in INTEC UiTM. Is the security better in UTM?

Are they very strict about outsiders entering and leaving the campus? What about students returning to their dorms? Is there a curfew time? hmm.gif

What if I go home once or twice? Is this allowed?

Are you from KL yourself? On holiday now? What's the holiday schedule like for Diploma UTM?
Aiseh, haven't started thinking of holiday.... just to satisfy my curiosity. cool2.gif

KSS,although there is Guard house and CCTV everywhere nearest to campus, doesnt mean it safe.

Last sem,3 of my friends and 1 senior lost their laptop and handphone.
There is a case where a girl steal her room mate stuff even an ATM card!

My advice, please keep your belonging safe and lock your locker and always lock your room's door every night.

Yes after many case reported missing stuff etc,the security already been tight.
There is curfew time that is after 11pm,you cant premitted in or out of the campus unless you have good reason.

Sure, after Minggu Haluan Siswa  u free to go home or outing with your friends and yeah im from Ampang. tongue.gif

Looks like I'm headed for UTM for sure. Not successful for JPA. I kinda guessed that would be the result.
So guys hoping all the tai ko in UTM will be ready to show a newbie around campus come July.
I'm glad you already made me feel welcome. At least not getting JPA has its blessings.
I already spoke to Pn Latipah and she said my late registration can be arranged. Just have to write a letter to UTM.

Hello everyone! I'm going to be doing my diploma in electronics engineering in UTM and I have some questions to ask.

1. I saw the dress code, and would like to know during the registration and formal events, what do non-Bumi girls usually wear? (I'm thinking of baju kurung or a Punjabi suit) They are asking us to wear 'baju lengan panjang, berkolar dan memakai kain labuh berwarna
gelap.' I can't imagine such a combination.
2. The hostel (I will be in KSJ), how many people must share a bathroom?

3. Do we have classes on Fridays? I've heard some places don't.

I hope you guys can help me out here.

Hi there, am I glad to see your post. Finally another girl in Diploma course at UTM KL. I'm in Diploma Senibina.

I guess we just dress as we did for our interviews should be OK. I think if you look in the mirror and see an "auntie" staring back then it should be about right. I'll probably get a baju kurung and wear the same thing every Monday.

I still don't know how I'm going to survive without a hairdryer.

Btw, I'm in Kolej Semarak. Afraid I won't be seeing you at Minggu Haluan Siswa as I will only enter on 13 July. Hope to meet you then.

Which school are you from? I'm from KL, SMK Aminuddin Baki. Apart from Lowyat forum people, I don't know anyone else in UTM as none of my school mates are going there.

Another piece of advice. Go read all the older posts on UTM and your course in this forum. I foung out everything I needed to know about the university, hostel and Architecture here. And you are really getting feedback from the students and lecturers themselves.

2.i dunoo lulz,im at KSS btw.
Hi again. Can you tell me a little bit more about the hostel rooms in KSS? Boys and girls rooms should be sama, right?
How many persons to a room? Do you find it crammed, or hot, in the hostel room I mean. Don't laugh at my next question, got air-con, ah?
Are we allowed to install extra locks on the doors or cupboards? I understand the person who used to occupy the room previously may still have access to the room.
How do you jaga your laptops or handphones?
Is it very far from the hostel block to the lecture halls or for me, the studio? Should I bring a bicycle?
What Co-Co activities are we required to participate in? I'm not exactly an active sports person.
What about the food there? Reasonably priced? Do students cook in their rooms? I know it's not allowed, but do they?
Thanks for taking time to answer. Oh ya, 1 more thing. You know any girls staying in KSS willing to chat with me?

Thanks for all your answers! Btw, what interview are you referring to, ktanlow? (please tell me it's the JPA one!) I only received a letter and that did not mention anything about an interview. I'm so freaking worried now!! shocking.gif

Oh, I forgot Engineering Diploma no need interview. doh.gif The Senibina one required aptitude plus drawing test and portfolio with interview. It was held right after the JPA interview. But it was nothing like the JPA interview. Three interviewers to one candidate. Nervous like hell. sweat.gif
I also went for JPA interview in Putrajaya. Applied for Architecture. Not successful for PILN. They offered PIDN Engineering in MMU, Melaka, which I rejected. What to do.... my dream is to study Architecture. icon_rolleyes.gif
If you meet any freshie in Senibina Diploma please tell me.
