It's all about bit-rate use by either DTS or DD. Common bit rate for DD is 384kbps but highest is 640kbps. DTS common is 768kbps but max is 1.5Mbps. If you check out all the latest blu-ray, most of the DD is 640kbps and DTS is 1.5Mbps. That's where you can get the best quality out from DD and DTS. TruHD and DTS MA is another level as the codec is loseless.

Bro just to make the topic interesting only. If you only wanna see which one people prefer then better choose the "Create Poll Only" option in the first place. sweat.gif

Sorry guys, i've realize that i've been too naive to think that people will just sit and choose the format they like without commenting on their choice...lesson learned blush.gif
So from now on this is a free discussion thread biggrin.gif Everybody is welcomed to share their experience with both the format as long as there are no flaming involve ok thumbup.gif

QUOTE(Alex_tan168 @ Jun 25 2009, 04:51 AM)
haiz... ofcoz ppl prefer which is batter la bro... if those ppl who dunno this kinda format they wont even bother.... sommore there's still alot of Malaysian dun even hv proper home teather system....
for those who know this things... sure will choose DTS la.....DTS also harder to get... even Ori DVD....my Die Hard 4.0 is DTS... my 300 Spartans is DD... Shit!!! jus check my collection... mostly is DD = ="
haiz... hopefully all use DTS  XD~
*
Ya true, not many people have a proper set of home theater...it's quite affordable nowdays...i believe if u look carefully u can find a good set in Pasar Road without having to spend so much money...
Yeah..DTS harder to get in Original DVD's..my cousin bought a lot but most of them are Dolby Digital...but 'ahem' the "alternative option" for original DVD got both Dolby and DTS in it..and its much cheaper sumore....ahem, not that i support the "alternative option" tongue.gif

QUOTE(megatron007 @ Jun 25 2009, 07:25 AM)
shouldn't be Dolby TruHD vs DTS HD MA now?
*
Aiyo bro..how many can afford Blu-Ray now..not many people even has a proper 5.1 setup yet...BTW, does BD disc have 7.1 yet...according to DTS website, DTS HD is 7.1...

QUOTE(Alex_tan168 @ Jun 25 2009, 08:06 AM)
hahaha got how many ppl can afford Blu-Ray rite now? and got how many ppl got proper home teather system?
M'sia still few step behind ler.... haiz.....wan to enjoy Doldy true HD and DTS MA need to spend abt 15K to get gud sound ler....not include TV o....

True true sweat.gif

QUOTE(ronnt88 @ Jun 25 2009, 08:44 AM)

QUOTE(azbro @ Jun 25 2009, 08:54 AM)
I go for DD....yeah I know that DTS is superior and stuff, but dunno why not so ngam with my home thearter....problems is there is after every few secs...there is dip in sound...maybe due to the higher bit rate.
*
Oh...a DD supporter...yeah, what do u mean by a dip in sound..izzit the speaker suddenly got no sound coming from it?

Added on June 25, 2009, 2:16 pmOk..time for me to give my own opinion on DTS...because the "Alternative Option" for original DVD got both Dolby Digital and DTS in it, i got the chance to compare them at the same time....I notice that SiriuslyCold said that its not fair to compare DTS and DD based on casual listening itself because DTS is set louder than DD, that one i agree....but i've try to turn on the volume for DD to be the same as DTS and i try to compare the same movie again...in this case "The Matrix Reloaded".

I notice that the gun shot sound sounded better on DTS, it is sharper and has more "Bang" sound to it...i also notice the glass shattering sound on DTS is far better and sharper than DD, it really has those ear piercing sound to it..thats my own opinion and experience on DTS...BTW, I can't wait for TF - ROTF and Star Trek to be released on DVD so i can listen to the DTS effect of the movie biggrin.gif

short answer is: in a theater, DTS wins due to the higher bit rate.
in your home theater with DVD, it is about the same.

this is due to the different formats used in movie theaters and on DVDs.

DTS have higher bitrate then DD so technically they should sound better. If i have a choice i will definitely go for DTS just because of that. But if you were to do a blind test, it is really hard to hear any difference between the 2 unless you have a very good system.

Really..i really can spot a huge difference between them during my test and for all of my movies, but i don't really have a high end system in my KL residence......i wonder why some of the people here says it is difficult to tell the difference between them? rclxub.gif

in theory, DTS has higher bit rate. but they use different algorithm, so it doesn't indicate everything. but DTS bit rate is like 3 times higher, so u can assume DTS in spec is better, because i can't believe DD algo is 3 times better in compression.

in theaters, DD is encoded on film. DTS is a separate disk. the DTS disk can contain a lot more data with different languages. due to this, in theaters, DTS is much better. so if u can find a DTS theater, u there.

in home DVD, because all DVD are digital, DD is no longer limited to the film. so, usualy DVD DD rate is better than those in theaters. but DTS on DVD is limited to almost half of that in the theater. so, in DVD, the level field is even. DD increased in bit rate from the theater film, and DTS reduced from the theater disk. so, for ur home theather, it is your HT system that matters. these formats don't make that different u can hear.

also, DTS is louder in volume. so most people feel DTS is better.
u can just increase your volume on DD format, and u'll feel the same on DD format.

Then there is one thing i wanted to ask laa...how DTS and DD actually works a? I heard people said before DTS is superior because it has stereo sound in the rear speaker and it makes the sound travel from the rear left to rear right...they say DD has only mono sound in its rear speaker so the sound won't move around like DTS...is there any truth to that? icon_question.gif
