try to do it on an open space. sometimes mine also hard to detect the GPS signal and need to wait for a long time.

Actually just use integrated GPS will do. You can also choose network but this won't give you too accurate position.

What's your firmware version?

Turn on your dialer, type in *#0000#

and yes, Assisted GPS will use 3G/GPRS
