Hi,
Anybody want to start this hobby can try Arduino. I found it easier to program than PIC and cheaper than Basic Stamp. No need to use programmer. You can write your code using "sketch", a free programming software.
For details please visit www.arduino.cc
Any questions about Arduino are welcome.
