Quack surgeon now needs a 'legal doctor'
2010/10/10
KUALA LUMPUR: A faith healer who went around with the title of "Professor Datuk Dr" will be charged on Thursday with allegedly running an illegal treatment centre and performing surgery using unorthodox methods.
The "doctor" will be charged under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998, and is liable to be fined up to RM300,000 or six months' imprisonment or both, if found guilty.
Popularly known as pembedahan batin, his surgeries were usually carried out without anaesthetic and he claimed that patients could immediately return to work after the treatment.
Acting on public information, ministry officials headed by a medical inspector from the Private Medical Practice Control Unit raided the business premises of the "doctor" in Johor on June 9.
They seized tools and equipment believed to have been used for pembedahan batin and sealed the premises.
Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the ministry would not compromise with anyone who practised this method of surgery as it could be dangerous to a person's health.
"I appeal to the public not to fall prey to this type of treatment as it can bring harm to people, especially those who suffer from cancer, kidney stones and fibroids.
"If not treated properly, these diseases could lead to complications and even fatality."
He said modern medicine had advanced tremendously and could cure illnesses if treated early and properly.
Dr Ismail said all private treatment centres that offered medical treatment must be licensed by the ministry under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act.
The public can check the status of a doctor or a traditional and complementary medicine practitioner by calling 03-8883 1278 or the ministry's traditional and complementary medicine division at 03-2698 5077.

Bogus doctors are just a pain
By NELSON BENJAMIN and DESIREE THRESA GASPER
news@thestar.com.my
JOHOR BARU: Bogus doctors and faith healers are advertising their services on the Internet and the vernacular newspapers [b]promising “painless” and “instant” recovery from a surgery.
Those conned by them include senior government servants, professionals and businessmen and they were told that they could return to work immediately after the treatment, said state Health Committee chairman Dr Robiah Kosai.
“Their selling point is that there is no pain and the patient can go back to work as soon as the procedure is over. The fees charged can run into thousands of ringgit.
“Any doctor will tell you that when a surgery is performed, the patient would definitely need some time to recover and heal,” she told The Star.
Describing such incidents as being rampant, she said the conmen would do anything to convince their victims, including having an operation theatre in their premises complete with surgical equipment.
Dr Robiah advised people to go to government hospitals or clinics to avoid complications.
“Sometimes those who go to bomohs and faith healers only come to the hospital when they are too sick and by then it is too late,” she said.
In a related case, an alternative medical practitioner was charged at a Sessions Court here with operating without a licence.
The director of Pusat Jagaan Ambulatori Swasta, Johari Mansor, 52, pleaded not guilty to the offence under the Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act.
He was jointly charged with his wife Rusnani Abd Rahman, 49, with operating the centre without a licence at Jalan Padi Emas in Bandar Baru Uda here on June 9.
Sessions Court judge Norazlan Ahmad set Nov 29 for trial.
