I believe that autism may be an evolutionary reorganization of the brain that has been in process for some time now. It actually fits a classic pattern. Most of what we call "severe" autism represents an evolutionary dead end. However, in a few instances (e.g. Asperger's and other forms associated with high intelligence), the modifications are passed to subsequent generations for further refinement.
I say this recognizing the irony that millions of dollars are being poured into research to discover a so-called cure -- a cure that, if I am right, would eliminate any evolutionary advantage that the modification would bring.
