Have you tried another USB connector or different USB port? I just update my colleuge's iPhone 3G from a G5 powerPC running MacOSX 10.4.11 Tiger and it's working fine.

While trying to update to 3.0 for my friend's iphone 3g, here was an incoming call and it actually disrupted the upgrade.....hance turn the iphone into restore mode. I was working on his notebook (PC). The itune cannot detect the iphone as well, try on another usb port....still the same.

I tried the iphone on my Macbook, and it can detect the iphone and ask me if I want to restore the iphone but will erase all data and infor on the phone. After I have done the restore....the phone works without the data.....then I try it on his notebook, and it can detect the phone again, then we restore all data back into the phone.
