My colleague has purchased the iPhone unlock from CutyourSim for USD169.99, he's waiting for the company to whitelist his IMEI and he will report back to me on Saturday to let me know if everything is okay. He got his iPhone 4 from the US for 200 bucks and he does not mind making it a Factory Unlocked phone for an extra 170 bucks. It's been an iPod Touch for the last 6 months.

The method is the one listed above lar:

1) Pay USD169 to get your IMEI whitelisted from CutYourSim.com (the waiting list is long BTW).
2) Bullshit O2 to whitelist your IMEI for free (but it's hard to bullshit them, but IT CAN BE DONE).
3) Gevey SIM.

And for option 2) you need an O2 phone number - which means you need a friend from the UK with a valid O2 number. And also some technical knowledge to lie to these people.

If not, you're better off with options 1) or 3).

I'm curious though, O2 and even some shops in UK has had whitelisting capabilities for a while. Why is it only now is it becoming so popular?

My understanding was that those shops with the whitelist can only whitelist European iPhone. I was told that they cannot whitelist AT&T iPhone .... maybe now they can, so that's why it's popular?

Or someone hacked a huge hole in Apple's auth servers... hmm.gif

Anyhow, there's a limited window for this (whitelisting) it seems. Apple WILL NOT let this go unchecked, for sure.

Unlock : Carrier Unlock where you able to use your phone on universal simcard.you can use whereever you are.

Jailbreak : At its core, jailbreaking a device gives access to its root filesystem, allowing modification and installing Third-party software components. This gives the user more control over the device and may allow features that were previously unavailable without jailbreaking.

That is workaround method for those having old baseband preserved to jb 4.3.1 and unlock old baseband.

Ur sentence will confuse ppl into upgrade to new ios that will destroy your old baseband using apple new ipsw.

The method in redmond is for people already have old baseband preserved, not for new lock phone.

The gevey sim is not to jailbreak the phone, it's to unlock the phone. Jailbreaking is free and if you're lucky, so is unlocking. But if you have a baseband that cannot be unlocked, then gevey sim or cutyoursim is the only solution you have right now and it's not cheap.
