Yes it is expensive.

The other option is for you to wait until the dev team comes up with an unlock. It has taken them more than 6 months and they still have not been able to unlock iPhone 4 baseband higher than 1.59 so looks like Apple has managed to beat the dev team on this issue.

My friend bought an iPhone 4 from France 6 months ago and it's basically an expensive iPod Touch .... if you are willing to pay the USD170, the provider will basically turn your phone into a factory unlocked phone ... the phone will be unlocked forever (that's what people are saying la ...) which is probably a better option than fiddling with the Gevey Sim. (USD170 is around 520 ringgit ... a Gevey Sim can cost you 250-500 ringgit ...)

the new solution is still using the old baseband, the 3gs that use ipad baseband can downgrade baseband (if not mistaken)

new iphone4 stock with 4.3 default will not be able to unlock, as it is already new baseband.

only 2 options for you dude,
1 - wait for the free unlock .. ETA unknown (possibly never)
2 - pay for unlock tools like gevey sim or imei unlock (permanent) which costs $170++

The Remote IMEI unlocks (which costs 169-175 dollars) is confirmed working. Here's the news from MMi

http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news/75931...ble-iphone.html

You pay RM500 and you get your iPhone unlocked forever. Personally, I'd go with this solution. Dev Team has not been able to unlock the latest baseband for the last 6 months. So your call on how long you want to wait.

O2 does free unlocks too if you rajin bullshit their CS on live chat.

QUOTE
Well mine worked. I synced to iTunes with the tmobile sim card installed and I got the "Congtulations" message. I'm still in shock that it actually work. I also had my doubts. i've tried two sims so far. tmobile and globe. Notice the +63 country code and then the 510 area code in the next pic. both tmobile and globe is recognized by iTunes now. Also note the phones serial number. so it must be factory unlocked now . Yes I can make and receive calla with the tmobile sim.

i wonder, is this the same method these other guys are using and then asking for $155??? trust me guys this works. you have nothing to loose by trying. why pay $155 when i got it done for FREE! read post 199 for details on how i got mine unloked with only my IMEI and without spending a penny.

Go bullshit them good here, tell them you're a O2 prepaid customer etc. It's not CONFIRMED to work but some AT&T guys managed to unlock their phones this way.

Example bullshit (Guy from US with an AT&T locked iPhone 4):

Welcome to O2. Someone will be with you soon.

Fay: Give me two minutes.
chester: okay
chester: its been two minutes
chester: any news?
Fay: I'm sorry.
Fay: I've now unlocked your iPhone (IMEI: (edited for this post)) free of charge. It'll take up to 24 hours to complete this process.
chester: ohh okay.. so thats it?
Fay: Yes.
chester: thanks Fay.. i'll try it out in 24hrs like you said..
Fay: You're welcome.
Fay: Yes, it'll be done within 24 hours.
Fay: Is there anything else I can help you with?
chester: thats it.. thanks again
chester: bye
Fay: It was a pleasure chatting with you.
Fay: We'd really like your feedback. Click on 'End chat' in the top right of this screen to tell us what you think. Bye.
chester: okay will do
Here's the live chat site, find LIVE CHAT on the page: https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q...route=unlocking

Taken from MMI (page 20 of the same thread above): http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news/75931...-iphone-20.html

It's a long shot and might even be FAKE, but for FREE, WTH right? Might as well try this first before buying a Gavey Sim/Cutmysim unlock.

But do it QUICKLY before they realize what's going on lol.

Well yes that works if your iPhone 4 brought from O2.... If not it wont work. O2 is actually can be factory unlock by carrier just that you either bring it to them or live chat maybe

Well, read the thread. Dunno if it's a fake but a guy with an AT&T locked phone just got lucky on page 20 (EDIT: on page 21-23 a few more guys got lucky already, including a guy from France lol).

Yes an AT&T iPhone just got unlocked for free by the O2 live chat.

In the end, it's just a matter of adding your IMEI number to the Apple database (which is what all this people asking for $170+ is doing anyway), and there's really no way of automagically determining which IMEI came from which carrier IINM, unless that particular carrier keeps a list - and the customer service consultant ACTUALLY refers to that list.

And if O2 can add your IMEI to the Apple unlock database simply like that, bullshitting them might not be impossible after all.

Hence the fact that some of the guys at MMI was successful (got malas CS reps who didn't check the list, or even bother to ask about where the iPhone was from), while others failed (got rajin CS reps who immediately asked where you bought your phone from, what's your O2 PAYG number, etc).

It all depends on your luck and how well you bullshit.

At least for today, before O2 management wises up and tells ALL CS REPS to check the damned list lol.

And even though the "UNLOCKED" phones might just get re-locked, you will have had a few hours to get your SHSH blobs saved so that you can downgrade to something safer. Or something - I'm not much of an unlock person.

Just go here: https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/help/help?qid=1&q...route=unlocking

Find "Live Chat". Keep trying until you get a chat window (everybody's trying now).

Tell the rep you're an O2 customer with a locked iPhone and you have just ordered an O2 Pay as you go simcard, so you would like to unlock your iPhone. Bullshit a lot (I've given an example in a previous post on how to bullshit).

If fail, try again. Change your nickname. Make sure you are connected to a different person (some reps are strict, some are easy).

Rinse and repeat until successful. Or until you lose your patience, at which point you should just get a Gavey sim.

Good luck.
