yes. all is normal for a locked set. proceed to unlocking with ultrasn0w once you have a WiFi connection.

is your phone officially-unlocked set or locked? if it's locked, you will need to jailbreak with redsn0w, and install ultrasn0w to unlock it. read the first page for more info.

it's okay. it can be done. just re-jailbreak with redsn0w, install Cydia only and download ultrasn0w. further instructions and guide on jailbreak can be found here.

since your phone is a locked US set. it will need an AT&T sim to activate it aka access into the phone.

but you can activate it via redsn0w. that's why you'll need to re-jailbreak. follow this guide.

once you've done so, you'll able to access the phone, but you can't access your Celcom network yet since it's still locked.

that's where you'll need to download ultrasn0w from Cydia to enable the phone to be used with Celcom or any other network other than AT&T.

you don't need to do that. here's what you need to do:

1. Download iPhone 3G 3.0 IPSW from here.
2. Jailbreak with redsn0w, follow the guide here. (install only Cydia)
*when asked to select firmware, select the 3.0 one
3. Download & install ultrasn0w from Cydia, guide is available here.
4. Reboot and you're done.

try with another SIM from other telcos such Celcom/Digi and see whether does the problem persist.

i do hope that yours will not be another example of isolated cases where ultrasn0w does not work.

like what Hanxz has mentioned, it might come with a soldered turbo sim (regardless of the phone's origin, China/US etc.) inside hence you're unable to unlock it via ultrasn0w.

purplera1n won't work on OS 3.0.1. try using redsn0w. follow the guide properly and make sure you did not missed out on any steps.

unlock and jailbreak are two different thing. once the phone is officially-unlocked (ie. your Maxis set), it will stay unlocked forever, regardless of the no. of times you jailbreak or any version of firmware you used during jailbreaking/updated to.

just proceed with the jailbreaking. you'll still be able to enjoy utilizing your 3GS on any carrier. that's the beauty of officially-unlocked sets. hassle/worry-free. smile.gif

try swap with another SIM and see does the same problem persist. most of the time, it's due to the network.

UPDATE (September 10th, 3:40AM): OS 3.1 and iTunes 9 has been released by Apple in the “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it” special music, iTunes, and iPod event on Wednesday. No news yet from the DevTeam so far regarding the unlock for locked i3G/3GS. Hence, stay on 3.0/3.0.1 for now until they have figured out a way to workaround the exploit.

just use redsn0w if you're on Windows. PwnageTool is for Mac users. never experience such issue like what you're facing.
