my niece got a Blackberry Flip 8220 from Ebay, and shes using it with Celcom BIS. Pretty seamless, except the buyer forgot to unlock the device for her since its factory sealed from T-mobile. Good buyer though, he emailed my niece the unlocking code the next day. So yeah, it is safe i reckon, just make sure buy it from seller with good reputation.

yes.. cocklea's right.. your significant hurdles are:

1. unlocking the unit.
2. getting through kastam/sirim.
3. operating system/os update (if your unit are not one of the supported models in malaysia telcos.. you practically have to hunt the software from other telco, worldwide.. like mine.. i got a pearl 8120.. which maxis/celcom do not carry software/os of this model)

so, if you're agnostic about having the latest software.. then probably item#1 is your greatest task.. (hint, don't do this task in malaysia.. it'd cost you a bomb!)

@cocklea...

Hmmmm my colleague bought an AT&T set from US and it has been unlocked.
however he told me that his bold is unable to sms when the phone is in 3G stage but when in EDGE then he is able to SMS

other than that his phone is fine ... is your niece's flip doing alright?

@lwb...

Firmware upgrading is no problem le ... can google it and can find it easily ... also my BB Bold firmware I am currently using is from Optus Aus ...
Wait for Maxis to release firmware? Maxis is slooooooooooooow !!! I think their latest firmware for the bold is .190 only ... seeing your logo ... Maxis fanboy or working in Maxis ?

simple for "a" but can be life challenging for "b"..

so, if a person is resourceful/knowledgeable.. it's nice to find deals via online and have all the stuff dealt with later..

there're a few good bb support guys in maxis.. chances are, you seldom know who they are.

Well at least they could take the initiative like the other Telcos to put post the latest firmware update for the phones rite...

Also most problems could be resolved by upgrading the firmware of the phone..

So What Maxis and celcom should do is have like a "Update Page" where user's can download the latest firmware from the BB Website as done by other overseas telco which have the correct vendor file inside...

are you aware that such update page is available from the local telcos? (of course, only the supported models sold under them)

hey jamezco, sorry for the late reply.

not sure if i can answer that q as the 8220 is a 2g device so theres no problem whatsoever when sending sms, emails, etc. that is kinda weird how ur fren's bold refuse to send sms under 3g but all good under edge.

that is not good. dunno why they would do such a thing, although i reckon ur fren can go to a bb expert/technician and reflash the whole thing with original bold (non at&t branded) firmware. i think thats doable.

Jamezco,

You can refer your friend to install the latest OS 4.6.0.282 and he will be able to change network from 3G to 2G only

Following is the link:-
http://www.blackberryforums.com/general-90...ork-choice.html

I am using a AT&T Unlocked BOLD too. Only drawback of .282 if you leave it on 3G mode it will suck up alot of battery like the old .167.

.266 seems to have good battery life on 3G network but no network selection for ATT BOLD. smile.gif

nope. not in 3G mode, cant send sms when i'm on 3G and that bugged me.

with .282 i am now always on 2G, that gives me excellent battery life unless i wanted to use it as a modem to connect to internet on my laptop smile.gif
