Excellent review bro! Just got my Megalodon today, and now am enjoying it with Metallica! biggrin.gif

But, i din get the stand though.. Bummer. What the heck, i still am loving the megalodon!!!

AND, i can safely say it trumps over my SteelSeries 5H v2 usb. Megalodon can handle music in 2.0 much, MUCH better than the 5H.

Razer FTW!!

@ Neo,

I'm wearing specs, and i'm happy to tell u that the Megalodon doesn't hurt the back of ur ears even after long hours of gaming. Played CSS and COD5 co-op with my frens last night for 5 hrs, and it's very comfortable. My specs are ZeroX, btw.

The only thing i don't like abt the Megalodon is the lack of customization in terms of EQ settings. And that it looks flimsy compared to my 5H v2. Other than that, it's fabulous!

Juz got back from KL, buying a new copy of GRID.

Ok, on to the review, as per your request... Apologies in advance if my review sounds too general, if u have any requests for me to review any particular parts of the Megalodon, pls don't hesitate to ask! nod.gif

So, here goes: The Razer Megalodon (ver. No Stand)

Right, first up: The Box

user posted image

When i first set my eyes on it, i was quite taken aback by the size of it. shocking.gif (W x B x H: 24cm x 13.5cm x 26cm)

What's inside?

user posted image

Upon sliding off the jacket, you'll find the Megalodon's catchphrase: "Put sound in its place"

Opening the black box, you will find:

user posted image

Cool, huh? See the sick, acid-green color underneath the jacket? So, in the black box you'll find a square, black envelope on the flap, and the Megalodon's case. (hard case, mind u.. hoho)

user posted image

The Megalodon's hard case

So, let's open the case ya?

user posted image

This is what the Megalodon looks like inside the case. Of course, the lights are off. When this pic was taken it was already plugged into my pc.

So, before i show you the headphone, let me show you what's inside the black envelope.

This is the envelope...

user posted image

And this is what's inside it. From top left, clockwise: The COA (Cert. of Authenticity), Quick Start Guide, Product Catalog, 2 Razer stickers and a Master Guide.

user posted image

And, this is it... The RAZER MEGALODON Headphone!

user posted image

Out of the box, the first thing you might notice is the glossy frame and Razer logo, the wire mesh and the braided wire which is to prevent tangles (nice job, Razer!)

And this is the APU (Audio Processing Unit)

user posted image

I simply love the lights. And the gloss. Now it is in 7.1 mode, you can toggle between 7.1 and 2.0 simply by pressing the "Maelstrom" button next to the 7.1 light. I find this feature very convenient.

Right, so now i'll explain what happens when you plug it into your PC.

Using the Megalodon is very simple. With no drivers, all you have to do is plug in the gold-plated USB to a USB port, and that's it!

Gaming with the Megalodon
Last night, i tried it with CS:S LAN play de_dust2, cs_office and de_chateau, and this is what i found out.

With the 7.1 Maelstrom Engine on, i was immersed in an array of sounds coming from all directions. It took some time to get used to, since my 5H v2 didn't produce sounds like the Megalodon did. Start walking around and you'll hear, with PRECISION, the location of your teammates.

When an enemy is moving towards you, you'll hear their footsteps clearly, and you'll be able to determine where they'll be coming from. Face that direction; wait for it... and... BAM!!! Headshots, baby... I must say, i am very impressed. With the Megalodon, i definitely have the advantage against my enemies. In gaming, the audio is very detailed. Crisp trebles (not those sharp, ear-piercing ones), and deep, rumbling basses (these are my absolute musts when i buy a headphone). The mic is great, no static whatsoever; even cranking the Mic Level and Mic Sensitivity at the APU doesn't pick up too much background noise. But when i'm playing, i just shout across to my friends... tongue.gif

Here is one feature that is quite useful: The ability to individually increase/decrease each channel's volume. You can do this by pressing the Razer logo on the APU, and turning the dial (I-Pod style) until you reach your preferred volume. So, u can emphasize which channel that you want! But now, i'm leaving this setting in default. I'm still exploring the settings now.

Next: Music, movies and gen-purpose listening

Note: For this you'll have to turn off the Maelstrom Engine. If you don't, you'll hear echoes everywhere, which spoils the sound. But, for DVDs/ BR movies that have surround sound, this is where it shines. (this is a part which i haven't tested yet, but i read it off a review in the net)

In this mode, the sound is.. Also AMAZING. As with the 7.1 mode, the trebles are very crisp and detailed, the basses is deep, and rumbling. Not like the BAM BAM, empty cans sound you'll experience with cap ayam headphones. It's more like BOO~M, BOO~M... This is the kind of bass i really adore and love, before the Megalodon, i only experienced it with my Creative HQ 1900, Phillips SHE 9501 and an old Koss (forgot what it was).

Ergonomics

Long hours of playing is no issue for the Megalodon, after 5 hrs of CS:S it feels comfortable and it doesn't hurt my ears. Specs users no need to worry, i am one myself and my ZeroX is not heavily pressed against my head, thus i am not in pain.

I wish the wire connecting the APU and headphone could be a little more longer. The Megalodon's (about) 1m wire seems insufficient; you'll have to take the headphone off before you can jump in euphoria after scoring a kill/victory.

Summing it up:

The Megalodon, for me has the PERFECT BALANCE between bass and treble. 3D positional audio is accurate, it definitely gives you an edge over your enemies in gaming. So, i do not have any regrets buying this one helluva headphone. I'd highly recommend the Megalodon to anyone searching for an awesome headphone

Of course, the $$ is another thing... If you have the means, go ahead!

I'm loving it, bros... icon_rolleyes.gif

You might want to read other reviews, Everdying made a very nice one thumbup.gif ; also try reading up reviews from the net.

Here's one

Again, sorry if my review sounded so... General. I'm just telling it as i have heard... With my own ears. biggrin.gif

@ Neo,

I don't quite understand what u mean by "silent mode"... But i'm guessing you are asking about the Megalodon's capability to seal off outside noise, is it?

@ H3LLKEEPER,

"what i liked about megalodon is that its good for music unlike 5hv2.."

Yes bro... My point exactly. This is why i simply love the Megalodon. No offence for SteelSeries fans out there, but the 5H v2 usb doesn't live up to my expectations when it comes to music.

@ changfui,

thanks for reading bro!
Yeah, i'm quite sad too that we don't get the stand.... cry.gif

@ Xiukeong,

Very true... SS emphasized too much on FPS gaming that they forgot there are users like me, who wants excellent gaming audio without compromising normal usability.

@ H3LLKEEPER,

come la... i'll hear u coming with my Megalodon cool.gif .. hahaha tongue.gif

@ Neo,

Yes, you can hear outside noise when nothing is playing on the Megalodon.
But when u game @ listen to music @ watch movie, little outside noise is heard. Which is a good thing (for me) when frens are shouting for help during CS:S.
But no need to worry, the outside noise is not that loud up to the point where ur listening experience is compromised.

@ j.sun,

Thanks for reading!
Not sure la bro, but i do recall reading somewhere that the Megalodon is exclusively for pc. I'll check it out later. Now, i need to shoot heads in CS:S! hehe

@ Xiukeong,

What headphone do u want to compare with? If the 5h v2 usb, i can help.

@ Xiukeong,

i cannot say for sure bro, Subry pointed out exactly what i wanted to say, u can't compare audiophile n gaming headset. I can tell u though, that the megalodon's sound is great for both game and music.

@ Tomatoman,

Well, i have a 5H v2 7.1 usb. But i don't have internal soundcard before.

btw for those who own Megalodon can the 5.1 source use on 7.1 ?
7.1 can use on gaming and movie only right ?
*
Yup... As long as it is surround sound, no problem. 7.1 can use for both gaming and movie, provided the source has surround sound (5.1 or 7.1).

D models... Indeed they can kill, hahaha... I'm guessing they're playing "Sexy Medic in the Battlefield" theme.

1.Sexy medics distract the enemy while treating the wounded
2.Enemy's eyeball pops off their sockets
3.The wounded puts a bullet in between the poor guy's eye.

3 birds using one stone, hahaha tongue.gif

Added on July 29, 2009, 4:35 amBtw, i observed this when i changed from Mantis Speed to Goliathus (using Copperhead, btw): No jitters! Tracking is WAAAY more accurate using the Goliathus. Is it because i'm using new pad or is the Goliathus better than the Mantis Speed?

i think that floorplan on pikom site isnt updated.
the flyer says the booth is no.421, island booth by itself.
i still got no scan yet, the ban leong ppl are of cos very busy now but eventually should get it.
*
Hmm... Yeah, booth 421 (info from pikom site) belongs to "Top Point". Whereas Ban leong's is at 502, somewhere near the exit.

So, any idea when is the updated floor plan's gonna come up?

@ Hellkeeper,

I'm curious: Why would u want a mouse that has a not-so-high polling rate? I thought the higher the better, since there'll be less lag.
Here's from Razer Support site.
