Would like to hear any feedbacks on this bluechip.

Added on June 8, 2009, 2:45 pmThe share has been plunging recently.
Other than COP being a possible reason, are there any other news?

Its lastest earning result is pretty poor, only 7.xx cents profit, so stock price reacted to the bad number or specifically fund managers react to it.

We will see its share under pressure for sometimes, until it can show turn around in the profit.

Next quarter results will be out this month....Another 2 more weeks or so...I wonder if it did better.

Probably a good time to grab some Tanjong shares since it has been down the last week or two smile.gif

Expensive is relative terms.
If they split by 10x, then you consider it cheap?

personally, should be quite a good bet at current price.
there is FD of 20sen to be paid. ex-date 29/7.
4Q is really bad, EPS only 7+, 1Q hopefully improve.

I buy based on long term potential.
It used to pay out 90 cents dividend PA.

This is a fundamental play.

There is a big player controlling this counter.
Is not an active counter, but occasionally the price fluctuates a lot in a day, value wise.

I understand that during uptrend, certain counters will actually become unattractive, due to their business nature.
Maybe some of the holders will opt to cash out and invest in some other cyclical counters.

If you factor in the last financial result, which was weak, and it looks like a candidate for dumping and jumping to another counter.

Nolah, I dont hold much, a few lots...
This counter is not as cyclical as the rest...

My money had been splurged on KNM!!

Added on June 10, 2009, 12:08 pmI queueing to buy 500 units at 13.00.
I won't be surprised if it is pushed down to 12.80.
If it falls below 12.80, it will be a very good buy.

grandfather story.... dad told me that my beloved grandpa hold xx lots of Tanjong, avg was RM12. during 1993, it went up to RM18 (or RM20), but my grandpa was stubborn to sell, as you can see, it was coming down after that, it even went down below my grandpa's average price, grandpa sien jor, then my dad advising him to do averaging, so he started to pick up some at RM8, etc.

Anyway, my beloved grandpa had passed away for a few years. But his Tanjong share is still there. smile.gif

P/s: Nice stratergy, teewan. I'd like to use that for averaging down too.

You need to understand how fund managers work.

When they have made a decision to sell because of downgrading, need for cash, poorer future expectation etc., they have target to sell the stocks until it clear off or hit its target disposing amount almost daily. That's why we always see price fall down dramatically in late afternoon and they will withdraw the unmatched selling Q to throw at buyers which resulted price goes down daily.

The trend is similar to Axreit previously from 1.50 -> 1.00.

It is same on the upside, you see KNM share up like no tomorrow and continously way from 40 cents to 1.00 when fund managers decided to add more into their portfolio.

That's why we always see a series of trend. When it is up, it will up trend for sometimes (with some minor pullback in between). Then people tend to make mistake to sell it early, as seen some gain, quickly sold off, but it keeps on going up. How many we heard people complain whenever they sold their share, it going up.

When it is down trend, it is going down almost daily (with some intermediate rebound but sink again afterwards).
And this time we heard a lot of people complain, whevenever I bought, it keeps going down.

Tanjong's main business or contribution come from IPP, aka power generation business, second is gaming 4D.
Horse racing actually is a losing business.

Interim sudah bayar, ex in April.
Final is the one on 29 July.

And then if got interim dividend, will ex in July. brows.gif

my guess, if their interim dividend is as good as previous year, that would indirectly boast the share price confidence.

looks like RM13 is the resistance.

Their cashflow will enable for the company to pay the dividend.

Last quarter poor result is because of refinancing cost of 200 million charges. Operational earning still ok.

Company is not a net cash rich, but with cash of 1.2 billion with long term debt and rollover/refinancing their short term borrowing, cash situation has nothing major worry.

ok lah, in this difficult economy situation.

Still 90 cents dividend annually projected for the full year can be intact.

Added on June 30, 2009, 4:05 pmJust notice that the ex-date of the 1st interim come sooner than last final dividend ex-date.

I think should hit RM 14.70 this week.

wooot. drool.gif drool.gif
i forgotten tomorrow is ex date, yay,, another 20cents dividend..

I've been thinking for a while. What is the best approach to accumulate Tanjong ? Should i just :
a)wait for the next dip (lower than 13.5) to buy or

b)use the dividend to lower my ABP and accumulate bit by bit. By doing so I may not benefit much from dividend, but can accumulate faster without waiting for a price dip, until meet my target for example 10,000 units. On average i get a discount of 70cents/year for my ABP.

any sifu got some hints ? notworthy.gif

Tanjong TP within 12mths is RM 18.50 - RM 19.00 depending on which research house's report.

No need to wait for dips... just buy and accumulate.

BTW I disposed off my 3,000 units of Tanjong at RM 15.10 yesterday.

Going into the bank sector now.

Just moved my money into Bursa.

My rational:
Looking at the robust trade these days, I think Bursa is going to go up. At least good dividend in the near future.

Today after cross checking Annual Report and Research House papers : Found that most research house recognized higher Revenue than suppose to be.

How come? S&Poor and Maybank are same figures. Other research house different figures.

ROE/ROA/Gearing all are different. How come eh? I thought is suppose to be the same.

Hi
Tanjong price down since this Q result not good & perhaps increase of Betting Duties?
Refer below Tanjong annoucement to Bursa
"Therefore the effective rate of Betting Duties will be 7.36% from 5.52%
previously. This revision is not expected to have a material impact on the results of the
Tanjong Group. "

I am confused why it says no impact on Tanjong Group result?

All Sifu out there, please help explain? thanks in advance

2267 (TANJONG)
Revision in Betting and Sweepstake Duties (Betting Duties)
01-07-2010 17:12:31

Tanjong Public Limited Company (Tanjong or Company)
- Revision in Betting and Sweepstake Duties (Betting Duties)
The Board of Tanjong wishes to announce that Pan Malaysian Pools Sdn. Bhd.
(PMP), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tanjong, had on 29 June 2010 been notified
by the Ministry of Finance in Malaysia of a revision in Betting Duties to 8%
from 6% previously. The new rate applies to draws held from June 2010 onwards.
Betting Duties are based on gross sales proceeds after deducting Gaming Tax of
8%. Therefore the effective rate of Betting Duties will be 7.36% from 5.52%
previously.
This revision is not expected to have a material impact on the results of the
Tanjong Group.

This announcement is dated 1 July 2010.

I think there is a big diff between Material Impact and No impact.

Tanjong does not say there is no impact at all, but the impact is not that big or so called Material.

But it could be compensated by other means like coming out with new games.

Others have done so, not sure about Tanjong.

Sky 1809,
Oh U R right. Thanks again.

All gaming stocks big selling pressure today.
Tanjong seeing this betting duties increase but still dare to declare higher dividend from 17.5 to 20sens.
Means their mngt is very confident on company future prospect? Consider FY11 PER is only 10x. Is it good time to collect?

Their cashflow enable them to do the 20 cents.

EPS is 44 cents, so 20 cents, it is just giving up 50% of its profit only, while cashflow position is healthy and steady as both gaming and power generation is cash generation business.

If Malaysia is serious to collect more taxes by Billions by slowing down " the activities in the black markets" , the sin companies do not actually mind about the 2% increase in tax.

The additional tax would mean to have better enforcement in the industries overall, what these ind basically hope for.

Win win for both. Maybe Govt does not have to depend so much on GST also. Election sensitive.

Looking from the positive side of it.

Good points. However, I very sceptical whether gov will put into good use for the industry or only benefit selected power group & their 'sub-contractors'.

I will vote to keep the money in the industry then give it to gov to manage.

I think it is a chicken and egg issue .

1malaysia talks about better pays for all.

I think the starting point is the ENFORCEMENT GROUP.

Without them, lesser revenues would be collected.

This coming election also needs strong supports from people from lower and middle incomes.

Without them, BN might perform badly.

Just my view.

Hi all sifu here,
Isn't Tanjong a fundamental sound Blue Chip stock? Why is it trading at such low price? ~with only PER 10x while still giving decent dividend yield at 5~6%

doesn't make sense at all especially when compare with YTL Power.

Appreciate your help to explain. thanks a lot.

imo, DY pulls the string here....
if Tanjong is traded @ 20x PER... the DY will be approx 3% only.. not attractive.. who wants to buy ?
YTLP is traded @ higher PER, but the DY is almost the same as Tanjong...

*
Besides comparing their DY. We need to know that TANJONG PLC operates gaming business where as YTLP doesn't. YTLPOWER owned WESSEX WATER which supply clean water.

From here we cannnot expect both of them to have the same valuation.

YTL POWER DECLARE tax exempted dividend of 7 % whereas TANJONG DIVIDEND after deducting tax will be only 5% .

YTL power price is almost at 52 weeks peak (RM2.28), Current PER 14.5x, High Dividend at 7% (75% payout), Gearing is at 2.5x (will maintain at this level for next 2~3yrs).

Tanjong price is -8% from 52 weeks peak (RM19.1), Current PER 10x, Lower Dividend 5% (50% payout), Gearing is at <1.
--> seems the company is keeping 50% of EPS, as cash reserve & also to reduce the debt (Gearing will reduce to <0.5 in 2~3yrs if they continue do so)

Imagine if Tanjong increase payout to 75%, Dividend yield will be 7% too.
For a company that perform as well with below additional plus points
- moving towards very low debt (Gearing<0.5)
- healthy balance sheet ready for new acquisition
- potential spin off non-core biz/Gaming Biz to release value

In view of above, The current price at RM17.60 with a PER 10x just look like a good bargain.

You could have bought Tanjong at rm 17 during the garage sales a few weeks ago.

By the time, you finished your research , you need to pay 60sen more. If you intend to buy 10,000 shares, the extra cost would be rm 6,000. And you could pay extra 2% dividend ( from 6K saving ) to yourself for the next donkey years.

Anyway, it is still a good buy if you like this stock at current prices.

The morale of the story is , investors could have lost or incurred higher opportunity costs by waiting.

Those hope to buy at rm 13 would miss the opportunity of a gain. Often they would have to buy at much higher prices at the end.

Just my view.

Somehow, I think you are a very a matured person, having good thoughts and analysis skills.

Perhaps lacking confidence in your own self, still ok when you are new and cautious about the markets.

Note : Tanjong got a few times, not too long ago dropped to rm 13 and was highlighted by our MOD, and yet not many took the opportunity to invest. Lari ayam, we used to say. Just for your info.

Keep it up and do share more with us thumbup.gif

.... On talk that Tanjong might be interested to acquire 21.45% of Mudajaya Group Bhd from Mulpha Infrastructure Holdings Sdn Bhd, Tanjong chairman Datuk Robert Cheim said the company had no intention of acquiring a significant stake in Mudajaya at this point of time.

However, both companies were working to bid for power plant projects in India, Ong said.

QUOTE
KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)--In a bid to turn Tanjong plc (2267.KU) into a bigger global power player, Malaysian billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan Friday offered to buy out minority shareholders for MYR4.66 billion ($1.46 billion) in the country's largest corporate deal so far this year.

The deal is the second biggest buyout in Malaysia, after Krishnan took Maxis Communications Bhd. private for MYR16 billion in 2007. It is also Krishnan's second buyout this week, after proposing to take Measat Global Bhd. (3875.KU) private for MYR662 million on Wednesday.

The offer from unlisted Tanjong Capital Sdn. Bhd, a special purpose vehicle controlled by Krishnan and friendly parties, at MYR21.80 per share, represents a 24% premium to Tanjong's last traded price of MYR17.58 a share. Krishnan and friendly parties currently own about 47% of Tanjong plc.

The offer values the entire listed power and gaming firm at MYR8.8 billion. It had a market value of MYR7.09 billion before its shares were suspended from trading Wednesday.

Nazir Razak, head of Tanjong Capital's advisers CIMB, told a news conference that there is "every possibility" the gaming and power assets of Tanjong will be relisted in the future, after a restructuring exercise.

Tanjong Capital said in a statement that Tanjong plc suffers from "conglomerate discount valuations" and part of the reasoning behind the deal is to realize its full potential and value.

The company's current structure will hamper its ambitions of becoming a global player in the power industry, it said.

Nazir said Tanjong plc may need up to $6 billion in financing to meet its target of doubling its current 6,000 megawatt gross power generating capacity.

A privately-held firm will find it easier to raise debt, plow cash flow back into the company and seek strategic alliances without needing to seek approval from minority shareholders, he said.

A consortium of banks--CIMB, RHB Bank, Standard Chartered and RBS--will provide financing for the buyout, Nazir said.

Tanjong, which was listed as a gaming company in 1991, has evolved into a power company, with more than 80% of operating profit coming from this division.

Analysts believe that Krishnan, whose fortune is estimated at $6 billion, making him Malaysia's second-richest man, wants to take Tanjong private to substantially increase its profile and expand its businesses.

Chris Eng, head of Kuala Lumpur OSK Research, said the offer is fair given the uncertain future trend in relation to possible new power assets. "The offer is also much higher than our net present value estimate of MYR18.60 which prices in the company's growth accretion for the next few years," he added.

Fund manager Pankaj Kumar, chief investment officer at Kurnia Insurans (Malaysia) Bhd., which manages MYR1.6 billion in funds, said "(the buyout) is a sad thing for the Malaysian market as it will take away a well-known and respected blue chip."

Ang Kok Heng, chief investment officer for Phillip Capital, who manages MYR900 million funds concurred. "For investors, this represents a loss of opportunity to ride on the company's growth as a listed entity."

Ang said Tanjong has stable cashflow and there is still a lot of opportunity for it to build or buy power plants.
Bye Tanjong, hopefully we'll meet again in KLSE tongue.gif

What if the acceptance <90%?

Anyway, this is the first listed co taken down since the announcement by bursa malaysia which requires the acceptance of >90% to force the existing shareholder to give up their shares, to protect the minority interest.

If acceptance is less than 90%, then it largely depended on offeror stand on it. They can still withdraw the privatisation plan. As the offer will only effective become unconditional after reach >90%.
It has stated clearly, the offer is conditional in the first place (aka to reach 90% mark, only then become unconditional)

But For Tanjong case, the word and intention is clear enough. While putting higher premium compared to market price, already signal the intention of offeror, as well as to ensure the privatisation plan going through.
I expect the acceptance is higher than 90%.

I don't quite understand the second statement.
It is always such a practice since last time out as far as I reckon, or no?

earlier ruling has a distinction between delisting and compulsory acquisition.
I can't recall clearly but if i'm not mistaken in order to delist its >90% and for compulsory acquisition its some where like >92%. Correct me if i'm wrong.
Anyway i'm not selling Tanjong in the market or accept their offer.
I'll just wait until the end.
My wish is to be a minority shareholder in a delisted Tanjong.
What Ananda did to Maxis he is repeating it here. Strip it of valuable assets and relist the rest in the near future.

Wait for the offer letter which is expected to come at the end of the month.
As stated they will send out within 21 days (circular dated 6 Aug).

Based on last time out experience (Ramatex offer), within a month time, will receive the money after accepting the offer.

When you are accepting the offer, you go to the your broker and transfer your share in the CDS to the offeror, whereby there is a transfer ref no.

Personal rep?
Your broker/remisier, I suppose.

When a company intended to be privatised, generally there won't be any dividend.

It is not the issue benefit alone, as minority shareholder in private company, your right won't be protected at all.
You can get zero dividend despite company earn trillion.
You cannot sell off your stake as it is a private company stake, nobody will be interested to buy off your 0.01% holding in a private company.

I find zero reason to hold on shares in a private company.

A share/asset that cannot be sold/liquidate, it is as good as none.

Remember even the Maxis relisting, the new Maxis is not the same entity with the old Maxis, they are different company.

You do not sign blank form. Bad practice, even though CDS doesn't allow third party transfer.
Fill in the shares you want to transfer, the securities code, amount of share.

Yes, any CDS transfer is charged Rm10.

Ya now a private company which we are not part of.
By the way being a minority shareholder is not such a bad idea if our stocks are not compulsorily acquired.
I remembered some companies taken private used to give big capital repayments.

Bad bad idea.
The reason of compulsorily of acquiring remaining shares is to protect minority shareholder.

Minority in a private company, nobody care about your benefit at all nor anyone can do to protect your benefit.

Majority shareholders, directors can give you zero cent, while they are getting million or billion of money from the company.
While it is not against law as well.

Wat u say is true, that's why when we choose a company to invest in we look at the management.
If the management is not of the type which takes care of its minority shareholders then better stay away.
Its difficult to find a good and sincere management team let alone be their minority shareholders.
Anyway as for Tanjong, being a UK registered company and AK 's reputation of shunning the limelight,
chances are they won't be too oppressive against its minority shareholders. This will not be the case for an Asian company (most likely smile.gif )
