Hi,

I'm not an expert in linux. I've foud out that there is no local
Linux Magazine in the market right now. There is a few mag from us
and uk which cost more than RM40. I'm aware that there is a lot of
info or news about linux that can be found on the net, but I think
its nicer to have at least 1 local Linux Magazine that cost about
RM10 with free CD. Anyone agree with me?

Need your feed back coz I'm thinking of publishing a local Linux
Magazine next year. Anybody interested to join this project please email me at azren15@time.net.my

The idea is this...

We need editors, technical writes, contributors, designers, reviews, etc. to make the local Linux Magazine dream a reality. The most important thins are ideas for example what articles / sections to put in etc...

I've actually already setup a website (almost done) where writers can post their article, etc.

All of you join up together and split the profits. Only way I know. Or get a VC interested in your plan.

Hmm.............

Dont give him pressure.

This is some basic calculation:

Depends of what quality of paper used le if RM10 i think quite ok to make it la coz printing a mag with a bout 60pages full color/paper type cost about RM4-5 depends per 10k copies/print and CD mass production might come around RM1(+ label printing) .

If plus all those production cost say RM2 per copy and some commision to seller/distributor or what ever middleman will say RM1 then the total cost will come around

RM4+1+2+1=RM8 and profit per copy is RM2(by putting RM10 as selling price.

Say he print 10k copy to test market 1st

RM2 *10k = RM20k and this onmly subject to sold all.

Assume his mag only laku 75% then it will be RM15k..........

Say his producction team is about 20 ppl then each of u earn about RM15k/20= RM750>> this is quite ok le if a good team organization setup and perharps u might start this as a part time............

Hint: U can cut a bit ur cost if u can find some sponsor thumbup.gif

I could lend a hand maybe if u need it.................. sweat.gif

Do let me know if ur mag is out. I will buy thumbup.gif

nice work man ...
this is a very healthy effort in spreading opensource resources throughout the region
for starters, try tackling the readers by investing something fun that can be enjoyed by all range of age. Just my 2 cent. Plus it would be kewl if u include the BSD family to spice up the agenda. Support local product. Outta here.

Cool.. but then PC Plus is a general mag right ? and PC Gamer covers all the games on the market ? in short, the potential market for those publications are huge -- there are tons of gamers, and even more PC users. I don't know if there are that many linux users.

Anyway, if it works I really bow down to him smile.gif

Wodenus,
The government sector is moving towards Linux. A lot of companies are telling Windows byebye. But that doesnt mean Windows are going to die. Since its been around long enough and many people has gotten used to it, the migration to Linux OS will not be an easy one.

I believe there's a market for Linux OS though its not THAT big but its not small either. Moderate. Best part about it, its free. And free isnt something people can resist, especially those on a tight budget.

However, have to agree with you, if it works out for him, I'll bow too.

True enough.. it's hard enough to get a linux magazine out for RM10, let alone one with a CD. I think if he manages to do it, it will probably be a world first (or is there already a linux mag with a CD that sells for RM10 ?)

your mother open printing factory ar? no lah just kidding.. hehe, no offense

cd will be very goddamn cheap if mass produced, (say 1000pcs) i mean the pressed ones. will amount to i think 50cents per piece at most, give or take 20cents.

about the printing part, methinks a 60pages full color glossy paper mag will cost more than rm10, since everyone knows that it's the advertisers who are subsidising everything.

but to me it's acceptable if the linux mag isnt full color and glossy and stuffs. even computimes shopper started out with bad quality papers. i know lah, dah jahanam the magazine, but it's been around for a very long time since that's the very first (i think it is) local com mag that we have, and there wasn't any competitors around.

im not a mac user anyway tongue.gif so i guess a nicely written article on a dirty piece of paper is very okay with me.

Simply put it, RM10 cannot justify a gloosy colored 60 pages magazine... Your problems can only be solved with either advertisement and sponsorship or the el-cheapo paper.

We need contributers from various areas of Open Source to provide worth to read articles on the Magazine. This is a grey area at this moment as, lot of people know about the Linux operating system but not many on Open Source software aplications and developement.

It's rather hard to get good writers IMO.. If we were going to write articles and stuff we need people with sufficient knowledge about technical issues in linux ,else the society will almost think that the linux community is a practical joke here. As it is i think not many malaysians are even aware of the Open Source movement let alone linux itself.
