Is there any difference in sound quality between SPDIF and Optical?

I'm connecting the SPDIF to my 5.1 HT amp, but doesn't seem to provide the Dolby. Is it only possible to get Dolby or DTS via optical?

If yes, anyone can recommend me a good PCIe sound card with Optical output. Thanks
