I experienced Kindle 2 first hand last week, borrowed from a friend who came back from Australia and I was attracted to it immediately. I travel and read very often so Kindle would be really useful on my journeys.

Did some research on how to get one over here in Malaysia and I must say this thread is really, really useful.

Now that I'm going to ask a friend to bring back the-all-new-kindle from the U.S for me (shipping by/before 10/9). Guess I'll settle for the Wi-Fi edition.

However, there are several questions still hanging over my head. From stringfellow's guide :

1. Does that mean that my friend in the US doesn't need to register my kindle for me there? Can I do it myself in Malaysia instead since it's out of the Whispernet coverage?

2. After doing all the steps stringfellow mentioned, my books can be downloaded over Wi-Fi using my account B amazon's account, is that right?

3. Would it be taxed if my friend shipped it to me instead of bringing it back himself?

I'm sorry if the answers are already in some of the posts above, but I just want to be absolutely sure before purchasing it.

Many thanks!

officially you get taxed/duty (15-20%, I think) for items worth more than RM500 (item price + shipping cost)... if your item gets to you without being held by customs, you're just lucky biggrin.gif

Don't think Amazon ships the Kindle directly to Malaysia though. Another option is to get someone to buy from US/UK/wherever it's available and ship them to you as a gift. This way it won't be back (I haven't try this way though!).

A friend of mine will be bringing back my Kindle from the states this weekend! Cant wait for it!

Hi guys,

Did you guys try to subscribe magazines/newspaper with an account using gift cards? It didnt work on mine because it says my credit card is not valid.

Any ways to get around this?
