I experienced Kindle 2 first hand last week, borrowed from a friend who came back from Australia and I was attracted to it immediately. I travel and read very often so Kindle would be really useful on my journeys.

Did some research on how to get one over here in Malaysia and I must say this thread is really, really useful.

Now that I'm going to ask a friend to bring back the-all-new-kindle from the U.S for me (shipping by/before 10/9). Guess I'll settle for the Wi-Fi edition.

However, there are several questions still hanging over my head. From stringfellow's guide :

1. Does that mean that my friend in the US doesn't need to register my kindle for me there? Can I do it myself in Malaysia instead since it's out of the Whispernet coverage?

2. After doing all the steps stringfellow mentioned, my books can be downloaded over Wi-Fi using my account B amazon's account, is that right?

3. Would it be taxed if my friend shipped it to me instead of bringing it back himself?

I'm sorry if the answers are already in some of the posts above, but I just want to be absolutely sure before purchasing it.

Many thanks!

Can the we surf the net on the wi-fi? i tot whispernet is needed to do that and thus won't be able to surf the net in Malaysia and china where that is not available.
Do you know shcizophreak? i do most of my travel in china so tot perhaps i could use the kindle to do some surfing but seems that i can't

I'm also wondering if i'll get taxed if i get the kindle shipped to malaysia from US. hopefully, someone can answer.

thanks

i was thinking of Bebook cos seems that we can get on wi-fi anywhere right? kindle 3 wifi still need the amazon access right? can'tjust go to the hotspot and surf? can kah?

but main question for me is can i just go to any wifi hotspot and surf the net with the 3rd gen Kindle or is surfing only possible with Whispernet?
