I read in Esquire magazine that to lose fat, you alternate within one workout between cardio and weightlifting. Cadio-weight-cardio-weight like that.
For me personally, the model I plan to use is to continue doing Rippetoe's program but without increasing the weights while cutting down on calories. Hopefully this will preserve my muscles while I lose the fat.
