DS-1 is crap? You must be so damn good to give that kind od comment...
I bet you didn't know what the DS-1 is the only pedal that has been on the mass production line with every aspect of it UNCHANGED for over 40 years. Many artists endorse it (including Steve Vai himself!) & it is the most popular distortion pedal. It is probably one of the most versetile dist pedals out there.

It may not suit your style, but I assure you it is nowhere near being crap.
Every Boss pedal is design to achive something that the other Boss pedals could not. Many people don't understand this and simply main-hantam buy only. That is why many end up to be dissatisfied.

boss ds-1 started in 1978, and the ds-1 has different components between the older japan and current taiwan models.
so to say its been unchanged and for over 40yrs, well thats obviously wrong.

as for steve vai, his ds-1 is modified like so many others...and i dont think he is endorsed by boss.

and i will also agree that the behringer GDI21 is much better tongue.gif

if boss, then try looking at the OS-2.
or if u got cash to spend, go for the OD-20...used ones are around RM450-500.

i use 3 different ds-1, a stock, a analogman modded one, and a keely modded one. even the stock one sounds damn good ok....
chugging chunky riffs? get a Noah's ark Distortion B. it emulates a mesa boogie rectifier distortion... chun man. i got 2 ,selling one.
got all sorts of boutique pedals go through my hands over the years, but a ds-2 is pretty much a ds 1 with a mod allowing the gain to be boosted. similar to my analogman.... so pretty worth it.and it can sound like the stock one as well.

too much generalization and biases.. not all tube amps go to metal territory gain, therefore the need for pedals, boutique or non, in front of it

yes, artistes endorse diff pedals, but only because it suits their needs..

it is all about what u need and what u dun..

listen to demos, try them out if possible, sometimes u have to go thru several pedals before u find the right one
