Very likely will go into chapter 11. If not how to save a company with so much of burden.

QUOTE
GM, for instance, pays benefits to about 650,000 retirees and surviving family members while it has about 70,750 current employees, including both union and non-union workers.

if you think it is going to be like CITIGROUP.... i think this is not the one...
Obama will not support GM since the company has too many administrative issue...
Comapre GM vs Citigroup... basically the answer is very clear that Citigroup is better than GM in all area

citigroup was bailout due to systemic risks to the financial sectors. while gm has their own "systemic" risks the impact is not as serious relative to the former. all indications are showing that they are well into filing for chapter 11. i'm with virtualgay. i don't think GM is going to be another citigroup story.

If you buy GM, you will be at the poor house soon.
GM common share values will be wiped out by next week when US bankruptcy court rule on them.

If you want to buy US automaker, the only one left and worth of speculation is FORD!

Seriously, of the big three, the one left surviving is FORD and they will recover.
Its share price is VERY attractive now. tongue.gif

Difficult to compare to Proton..

US Govt is not like Malaysia Govt.
For motor industry, their policy is not to practise unfair competition like Malaysia govt, who intentionally
tax higher on foreign cars, so that local cars (like Proton) can survive.

That is why cars are cheaper in US whether it is local or foreign import.
Because of free competition, only the strong shall survive regardless whether it is local or foreign.

Also, US citizens do not like their govt to meddle in private businesses.
As far I know, there is no such as GLCs (Govt Linked Companies) over there..
Government and Business do not mix - because of conflict of interest.

GM is a publicly listed company but has no Govt controlled (unlike Malaysia) until recently.
Only during this downturn it asked for US Govt help, US govt has some stakes in there.
The US senators scolded the GM executive like a dog on live TV.. man you should see it on the web.
US govt only help because they do not wish to have those people lose their jobs but GM still doesn't get it
after getting billions of dollars. The auto-union labor are part of the problem who had caused them to fail big time.

Most US citizens do not like their govt to support GM because they felt their tax money unwisely are being used
to fund a legacy company that is dying anyway and it is not competitive enough to compete.

If GM dies, their cars are still being warranty of course... because most parts are generic, they can still get parts.
But, for future purchase, nobody would want to buy cars from them anymore - they simply lost trust.

GM may get out of bankruptcy if they're able to reorganise into a much smaller company, with less burden and focus on cars that consumers really want, instead of continuing to build cars that consume a lot of petrol (like the SUV 4x4 or Hummel).

Now, if this is Proton.. and if it is not for Malaysia Govt continuing to pump billions into Proton or unfairly tax other foreign
cars.. Proton would have die years ago. nod.gif

Old GM will be filing chapter 11 bankruptcy which path the way for new GM company. Under new GM company existing old GM shareholders' holding will totally wiped out or severely diluted, as bondholders, UAW and US gov are the major shareholders under the deal/restructuring, which means existing old GM shareholders become minority shareholders, that's why it worth little.

Existing old GM shareholders is not even worth at US1.00 as lot of financial advisors already pointed out, buying 1.00 is like gambling aka wishing some other person willing to gamble to buy more than 1.00, it has no fundamental to support or backing of it.

Situation is similar to TA-WB locally.

Car making Ind in USA is a sunset industry.

To turnaround basically involving the changing the mindset of their people, the management and the workers.

It is as tough as turning their economy into a better shape.

Old theory says it might be better to let them fail, unless their people see and believing in changing for the better.

I doubt they would , not in the near future.
