I'm not sure how your converter works, but you should pass the AC3/DTS signal to your sound card. Is the converter consider a sound card device?

Go install the K-Lite codecs (with AC3 filter). Select AC3 filter as your default decoder and run AC3, then check the box to "passthrough" the AC3 and DTS signals.
