Koh Lipe probably hv the best crystal clear water but those chalets style accomo look really basic..Resorst closer to Krabi or even at Ko Lanta more developed although water quality over there so-so only...so I think u know what u want already  biggrin.gif

Sita Beach Resort look amazing but the price is rclxub.gif

I've asked this question in Tripadvisor, and according to the experts there, the island will be quite 'dead' with no one around because it's low season.

You can check at the Langkawi forum at tripadvisor.com and ask there as well.

good luck!

In case you guys were still wondering, Koh Lipe is closed from May until November.

For Langkawi-Lipe shuttle ferry information, check out Telaga Terminal @ Telaga Harbour Marina for more information on getting from Langkawi to Koh Lipe.

Yeah, it sounds expensive. But from what I understand, this is a cross border country to country journey. I don't think it's like Kuala Perlis to Langkawi.

Anyway, from Satun Province, you have to drive to Pak Barra port. Then take a ferry to Koh Lipe. It's around 60-70 Ringgit. Twice the journey time from Langkawi.

Koh lipe is open from May -> December , Not close. LoL

I'm going there for xmas for 6 days.
Since i'm from Penang, taking a van down to satun will be the cheapest for me.

I'm still looking for a place to stay. Most places are not allowed to book. Book when you are there. Budget places.
Looking for a place around 400baht , fan is good smile.gif toilet clean is what i need. LoL.

Better resort are 700 baht. cold shower & fan. But b'fast are inclusive.
Extra 300 baht for sea view.

The information i get right now , you don't need a bike to go around the island. Walking is enought. No atm banks there , be sure you bring enough cash there. got money changer , but rates are high.

I am quite suprised that so many are interested in this isolated island . It is an adventure though and the pristine waters are fantastic and it is so because the logistics of travelling their is scary and that's why it is still isolated. It's not even found out by Lonely Planet, LOL.

I have been there three times during my stay in Langkawi and there are reasons why local Langkawi go there. They go there to tarik 'ganja' as it is known then that ganja is also grown on the island. Pulau Adang is actually a private island and hence guarded by Rangers. Even in Koh Lipe (which is actually a fishing village), you have to pay the Ranger there for admission fees, more like protection money. Koh Taratao (the big island across the sea if you are looking out to the sea from Four Season or Tanjung Rhu Resort. It is a marine park and actually bigger than both the mentioned islands but waters are the same as Langkawi.

Koh Lipe is controlled by a penghulu and it is closed during the monsoon period ( don't know when, forgotten ). Most of the villagers will mostly go to the mainland Pak Bara or Langkawi in fact. Some holds 2 passports. The reason Telaga Harbour Park was built was they initially wanted to create a transit point for Koh Adang. In fact when one politician wanted to get a casino licence to operate in Gunung Raya in Langkawi failed they shifted their interest to Koh Adang. All the negotiations were in the final stages actually( permission was granted actually from the governor of Songkla), that is why Telaga Harbour Park project went along and the Thai consulate shifted from Penang to Langkawi. This is to facilitate the entry formalities, you know passport stamping. This went on until our former PM offended their PM at that time (Thaksin) over the southern Thailand problems. The Thai PM cancelled the whole casino thing.

Travelling there is always a problem but if you have groups of more than 8 person you can talk to Ebao (Restoran Ebao). The restaurant is situated in Jalan Padang Lallang (on the left just after Tg.Rhu roundabout on the way to datai). His wife is from Pak Bara and he organises fishing trips around that area, Taratao, Pulau Burung, Tg.Cincin etc. He can actually call a boat from Pak Bara and wait at Taratao and he ferries you to the boat in waiting from Tg.Rhu jetty. All this is not legal though as you are leaving Malaysia and entering Thailand illegally.

Overall, I think Koh Lipe is not suitable for couples. For a group, yes. Mat Sallehs like like because it is isolated and cheap for them. The lodgings actually very louyah! I have also scuba dive there and although visibility is very good, the corals have been damaged by their practice of fish bombing. So much so it is so rampant that their widows there are also doing flesh trade to earn money. Water is clear, sand is powdery and sea food is fresh and cheap.

I will say if you want to destress and live their for a week, than the whole process of travelling there is worth it, that is if you don't ask for nightlife or whatever modern day life style. That is why mat sallehs love it.

Thanks for the important info Kazebert! We will fly to Hat Yai from BKK around Oct. We bought our cheap air tickets from the web. But we want to stay in ko Lanta for a week. Looking for a nice hotel there, may be at Twinbay Resort after Ko Lepi or we might get the boat trip along Andaman Islands. Will see...

Cheers

I am planning to go there from 25/09/2010 until 27/09/2010 and I've bought flight tickets to Langkawi. Surprisingly a friend of mine try to go there last two weeks and he said that an agent at Langkawi told him Koh Lipe will be closed until October 2010, there will be no transportation from Langkawi to Koh Lipe. Is this really true?
