I have ipod which i got for free from competition. I wanted to register the warranty, but it ask for date purchase. How to deal with this item if it is not purchase by me?

How if the item is faulty, like problem with earphones. Since the item is a prize, can I just go to any apple reseller for checking if i have no receipt and not yet register the warranty?
