I am usually a lurker in this thread and I see how a lot of discussions are concerning problems with the phone. Although N82 is out of production, all these talk about phone troubles can still prove to be nerve wrecking for potential new owners eh? :-)

So here's my input:
Owner since: May 2008
Phone type: AP, black
Firmware version: v20
Phone condition: stock, never tinkered (a.k.a. hxxk)
Main use: wifi, camera
Battery life: about 4 days, with heavy wifi use it's about 2 days (ori battery since bought)
Memory card: the 2GB stock that came with phone
Drops: 2 times onto wooden floor
Problems: some hot pixel present since bought, besides that no problem whatsoever.
Shop info: bought from a trusted shop (family friend)
Phone care: always kept in padded cloth phone pouch, phone is always resting on pouch rather than directly on surfaces. Hence scratchless (I know I baby the phone very much). I also use a second basic phone for rough outdoor conditions instead of taking n82.

My point is, behind the horror stories that usually gets the limelight, there are also owners like me that are happy with their perfectly functioning phones. To be honest, if I didn't own this phone, I'd be scared to buy it after reading about all the phone problems :-p

To potential new owners, good luck and enjoy the awesome N82! :-D

I typed and copied paragraphs from a library book into N82 without a problem. It was like having a mini laptop. Although the keypad looks weird, it's actually very functional. I can type very fast in msn and people often thought I am on the computer :-p

However, the keypad is not very comfortable to use with long nails. I guess it's the same thing with long nails not being good for typing generally.

anyone know where got newer version window live messenger for n82 to download?
*
A bit out of topic but have you tried ebuddy? It's better than live messenger in these ways:
1. Supports multiple clients like yahoo, google talk, facebook etc
2. Adjustable alert volume, live messenger's is too loud.
3. Easier to scroll through chats
4. Supports offline messages, just like on PC ebuddy can show messages we received when we were offline after we log on. The live messenger on my phone doesn't do that.
5. Ebuddy is more efficient with data transfer, although it can still be expensive.

The only things I think Live Messenger is better than ebuddy is the adjustable chat font and the capability of typing directly on the chat (without changing screens). Even though ebuddy has that type-directly-into-chat-window feature too, it still doesn't support T9 input yet :-/ but other than that, ebuddy is my preferred chat client on N82 :-D

Hey guys, ever tried connecting to those free wifi at places such as Starbucks? I don't live in town area so haven't really got the chance to try in the past. Had a rude discovery on my trip to KL that N82 had trouble connecting to free wifis at Starbucks, coffee bean, and even KLIA. I thought my wifi adaptor was broken, gave me a scare. Thankfully I was able to connect to the wifi at my hotel so that was a relief.

I remember being able to connect to a Coffee Bean in KK last year and I was also able to connect to McD wifi at KKIA. So does that mean places like Starbucks and Coffee Bean now uses an encryption that N82 can't handle? (also failed at connecting to Starbucks yesterday).

Just to be clear, connecting to these public wifis points is not crucial to me as I have Streamyx at home, connected to a wireless router and works without a problem with N82. I'm just curious with the phenomenon. Anyone having similar experiences?

Some WiFi have to go through their website first before you are allowed to surf elsewhere.

I seem to remember my friends doing that many years ago in a Starbucks, maybe that's the reason. As for me, I was trying just for fun from outside the cafe hehe, not really a fan of Starbucks. Prefer Coffee Bean :-)

Don't worry about the keypad, it may look weird but the tactile feedback is great. The distance between keys adds accuracy as well. I much prefer this over the "normal" keypad on my other phone the SE W350i.

I actually liked the keypad the moment I tested N82 at the shop :-)

the given calendar / alarm software can't do weekly repeat alarm right? (or is it just my phone?? ) tongue.gif  I feel like setting time/dates for certain tv show but i dont think i can find the application in the n82 yet...

can you guys suggest a free app that i can get from the Web for this...been googling everywhere (inc. this thread) but to no avail. And they're like charging fees for this simple application. Even my old nokia 6230 has this function built-in for free...

sorry if this has been asked anywhere in the earlier versions of this threads

thx!

Hi, just go to Calendar > Options > New Entry > Meeting

Then just fill in the particulars, set the alarm on, and for Repeat choose Weekly (besides weekly there's also Daily, Fortnightly, Monthly and Yearly).

Btw I have weekly alerts for favourite tv shows too hehe. Never miss anything again! :-D

Edit: Forgot to mention remember to key in the date for "Repeat Until", I usually put it as 31 Dec so it won't clutter up next year's calendar :-p

the value now is  sweat.gif

by the way I need some question answered here since I changed my LCD screen.

the colour of my screen seems odd...not the colour that I use to see.
the color seems bright but not vibrant.

will n82 dim screen after the display time out or completely off the light?
my display turned completely dark after the timeout ( cannot see the display )
is this normal?

update : the lcd i changed cost RM80 only....which is not original i think. Whats the original n82 lcd cost?
*

I think the light turns off, in this condition the screen can only be read with a strong source of light and playing with the angles a bit.

I tried going to several websites to learn how to configure my nokia n82 to receive email messages from gmail but somehow, it just doesnt work. can anyone post a step by step guide for how to do so please?

thank you.

Hi there, I recommend you to get the Gmail for Mobile app as well. I use it more than the other alternative (the one you're trying to set up), since it has the bad habit of leaving headers visible at the Email section. If you want to remove the headers, you'll have to delete them from gmail's email server, which is pretty stupid imo.

The Gmail app can view image attachments as well, although it is scaled down to fit the phone's screen. Unfortunately it can't send image attachments. For that, we'll need the one you're trying to set up. That's why I have both, but usually use the java app unless I need to mail attachments.

check the earphone jack 3.5mm, work or not. battery kembung or not.

My original battery suffered from the "battery kembung" effect. What causes that? O_o

I'm using the high capacity Sun Global battery now and I love it! :-D

I see, thanks for the tip. Actually it was my brother that noticed the battery became bloated since I rarely open the battery compartment.

Wish to share an experience with fellow N82 owners here smile.gif

Earlier today, I wanted to email some photos to my friend but was shocked to see my Gallery was empty! The only item left there was the demo video that was saved in Phone Memory. I thought my memory card was corrupted, but strangely I was able to access its data using File Manager. I tried a few methods; such as removing and reinserting the card, turn the phone on and off, but they didn't work. Therefore I did a quick search in the net and decided to go with the theory that the bug might be caused by a recent corrupted file.

I removed the card from the phone and moved the suspected files to my computer. Then I did an Error-Check and defragged the card before returning it to N82. Thankfully the Gallery works like normal again. Phew! I'm just glad I don't need to do any resets or reformatting biggrin.gif

I've owned this phone for nearly 3 years and this is the first time it caused any problems, for a smart phone that's a pretty good track record. Really love this phone! rclxm9.gif

Recently discovered a free programme called Calibre that can convert e-book formats. I tested it by converting a PDF e-book into .txt and opened it using LightNotepad. Looks great! Love the Page Down and bookmark saving functions, perfect for reading e-books thumbup.gif Personally, I really hate the default PDF viewer in the phone.

I had planned on buying an e-book reader, now that I've discovered this Calibre + LightNotepad combo, I can put that on hold for now and save the cash rclxm9.gif

p.s. I originally installed LightNotepad as a middle ground between the default Notes and Quick Word. LightNotepad maximises screen real estate and enables editing, unlike the view only Quick Word. Two limitations: it doesn't support formatting and it becomes view-only for files over 200 KB in size (there's a warning before opening the large file that the programme might crash, though I never had LightNotepad crash on me before).

p.p.s. Quick Word couldn't even open the .txt e-book because it ran out of memory shakehead.gif
