anyone have any good recommendation for managing sms and backing the sms up for nokia n82? getting frustrated trying to find the best application for doing this.

nokia pc suite (nokia communication centre) - sucks; stupid thing when exports the smses only exports in one lousy format: csv format that doesn't retain carriage return characters, is not in a readable format for the common user, does not properly read the timestamp for mms messages, does not save and store attachments, etc etc

oxygen sms manager - sort of acceptable. the problem is that it backups the entire sms instead of allowing single individual backups.

i m still wondering upgrade it or not...but i m quite fine wif my v30 now

updated to latest v31. no problems. just do the upgrade. u'll face the same issue of needing to hack on the v30 anyways so u may as well upgrade to the latest firmware so that at least most major issues is fixed smile.gif

Hi all, seeking out opinion on a RMAed nokia n82 phone.

i brought my quite new (3 months since bought) nokia AP phone for warranty directly to the service centre. upon receiving back the phone, i noticed a whole list of problems namely the following:

1. deep scratching on the inside housing of the phone at the LCD screen area
2. my memory card door is damaged to the point that it's difficult to be kept closed
3. inside of camera lens section is dirty with smudges of finger print
4. my lcd is now cannibalised. the color is washed out, staring straight at the screen will produce significant glare. the only way to counter this seems to be to look at the screen at at least a 30 degree angle in order to see the screen properly but even then, the color is still washed out. example: real white color looks greyish instead.

of course i complain all the top 3 issues to them (no. 4 i've only really noticed when i actually brought my phone back) but they only opened up the phone and clean the inside of the camera lens section.

the rest they say the phone was handed to them in such a condition in the first place. i can honestly say that before handing to them my phone, all the listed problems above never existed. so it is a case of my word against theirs.

The question:

what do i do? is there any way to resolve this problem? is it that if return my phone for warranty again they will get angry and damage my phone even further before returning to me? anyone got any ideas on what i should or could do?

Serious discussion and replies please.

why was the phone RMAed? LCD problem?
from wat i see, its a case of bad service center.
unless you can build a strong case, physical damages to the phone, cannot be undone and will not be replaced by them.
for our info, which service center is this? mind providing a name and address?

for the lcd, is it the brightness setting?
or u can bring it to another center and have them look at it, might be a bad connection or something.
*
camera problem was the reason to go for RMA. which service center? pacific service center at upper ground floor of low yat.

i'm sorry but i'm a bit knowleadgeable on gadgets and electronic stuffs and so i can clearly confirm that it's not a simple brightness setting. i can only speculate that either the backlighting is fixed improperly or that the LCD of the phone itself is screwed up or broken.

i can't bring to any other service center. this phone is still under warranty and hence i can only bring back to this particular service center to try and fix it. if i send to any other place, my warranty is voided. my problem is that if i bring this phone back to them, i'm afraid that they're going to cannibalise it more and more. i've heard of stories whereby shops will actually take out the good parts of your phone and replace it with lower quality ones. furthermore, they can continue to damage my phone physically and keep claiming that when i send in my phone, it was already that way.

i can raise my voice and kick up a storm but at what cost? the lost of the possibility of my phone being fixed while under warranty?? do you get my situation here?

AP unit may be cheaper, only if no problem happens. I always suggest ppl to buy from authorised shops for phones >RM1k.

Just consider the extra you pay over the AP unit as buying insurance. When problem happens, you can bet on Nokia and legal ways to support you for part replacement, even if you have to take the long legal way.
*
Actually, the reason i went with AP was that Nokia original warranty is only for 1 year whereas the AP is 1year and a half and when the warranty is lapsed, either way you will still have to pay to fix your machine so i thought it would be better to go the AP way because longer warranty and in the end still need to pay to fix the machine regardless.

Thanks all for your replies. Will now consider what is the best path to take.

So for all those who is thinking of getting a good nokia unit especially the out of production n82, you should know which AP warranty shop to avoid now.. cause your pretty decent mobile going in may come out differently!! The people working in that shop is just plain terrible at repairs. When i think about it, it's terrible to fix a mobile phone at such below par levels.

you are right ! if they don't want claim for you they will then give a lot excuse to ignore you  smile.gif

remember last time wanted to claim my AP set thru warranty company , at last they came out with a unacceptable excuse to chase me out  sweat.gif

can you elaborate more what excuse they give to avoid giving the warranty?

the screen looks grey-ish?
same here. hav to look 30degree for an ok-view.
and the lcd is dirty (dust, fibre), i think someone already opened it up for an unknown reason...
hell, it is a 2nd set phone hehe.
*
anyone else with this problem? my phone's LCD was good till i brought my set to be repaired by PACIFIC. ever since then i can't really see proper colors anymore and if want to view the phone nicely, i've got to view it at an angle. suspecting that they swiped my good LCD for something else. this is so darn frustrating having to use this phone this way. i really do hate PACIFIC service center @ low yat right now. it's downright unethical to do such a thing and to damage so badly my new phone.

very unlikely that they will release anymore. the phone's status is already not in production anymore.

updated to the latest firmware v35.0.002 from last v31.0.016.

all major applications and functionality intact and working:
- outbound/inbound phone calls tested working
- sms/mms tested working
- bluetooth tested working
- wifi tested working
- a-gps & gps tested working
- *ahem* stuffs/ways are still functioning

main immediate noticeable change:
- default font for the phone has been changed. imo, it looks kinda ugly the new default font.
- phone felt faster and smoother and response time from key input felt better

im not sure why but it happens to me too
if you're sure that you followed the right path then it's ok
but the 'recalculating' word makes you panic sometimes laugh.gif
*
actually, this is pathfinding issue. in garmin mobile v5, you will notice this recalculating problem quite a lot. v4 is far far less. also another probability is that the path you took is not mapped correctly hence very sensitive to errors in gps route calculation. also take note that the GPS unit in phones is not as accurate or as sophisticated as dedicated GPS units. for example GPS decoders in phones like the n82 is accurate by a few metres whereas sophisticated gps decoders are accurate by centimeters.
