I thought theres unlimited usage , where you just have to pay a certain amount a month
99 a month which is what i'm paying, but none of the "reasonable" maxis iPhone plans had any option of unlimited usage.

Not to be an ass, but now that I read up on all you guys' horror stories I'm so glad I bought a Singtel set and went Value 50 + 99 unlimited instead of the Maxis plans.
I did get a bit pissed off @ the first bill cos the first bill = RM 153.xx ... which exceeded my credit limit of RM 150.00 ... so Maxis immediately barred my phone on the billing date. Before the bill even reach my hands already phone barred, zzzz. |

in iOS4 you're supposed to set Cellular Data = OFF, this will turn off data totally.
mmm i thought my 500mb maxis plan was a hard cap, but it's not. happily happily use and now i'm slapped with an rm250 data bill instead of my monthly rm58 commitment. |

@kayent: the only warning you'll get is that maxis will send you an sms saying "your unbilled charges exceed 80% of your credit limit" and you'll be like wtfx00000000000r???!? but it's too late already
Added on October 8, 2010, 10:48 pmAnyway, I've been travelling around a bit lately and it's amazing how (relatively) overpriced maxis is. They charge 10kb = RM0.05, right? I'm in Mauritius at the moment and on Emtel prepaid. Charges are 100kb = RM0.07 (roughly). Some more SMS to non-emtel networks is Rm0.06 regardless of country. Tomorrow flying to Kenya, gonna see how expensive/cheap the prepaid simcards are there This post has been edited by deodorant: Oct 8 2010, 10:48 PM |

I've been travelling a bit lately in the Africa region, and I just want to share a bit of comparison.
I've had prepaid sim cards for Emtel (Mauritius) and Safaricom (Kenya). Both of these countries are backwaters compared to Malaysia, way poorer infrastructure and development. But guess what ... both countries prepaid out-of-package data rates are about usd0.10 per mb. And if you do buy a data package, you don't need to worry at all about monitoring your data usage on iPhone, because when your data about to finish they'll auto SMS you to tell you that "you only have 2mb remaining." So ... why are Malaysia's data rates (and especially Maxis one) so expensive? Maxis is rm10/mb for crying out loud. |
