My current usage is 24 hours on 3G push with two e-mail accounts on hour basis. Sometime I did online FB and youtube. So far only 120MB used....

Maxis don't have any such thing as stop usage if we reach the limit of our plan?

DO They care?? Afraid that's what they wanted... users exceed usage sad.gif

wondering, how hard to build a system for us to monitor and check real time on DATA usage?

@vui_msia,
U might as well use the feature that's built-in with your phone. It may not be 100% accurate but it wouldn't be too inaccurate either.

the system is already there (as seen in the prepaid category, where credit is being depleted in real time).

but as mentioned, which network provider will actually do that? just practice some self restrain and you will be alright (i know i did)

@Brick1235,
The Maxis Unlimited Plan is really up to 3GB. Anything over it, U'll be charged on a pay per use usage up to a maximum of RM250!

hi all...i'm really quite new to the whole iphone phenomenon...got interested only cos of the new 3GS...

i was havin a chat today with a customer, who's supposedly quite tech savy...i told him bout the 3GS and he told me bout a bug in the iphone. apparently, even if you're surfing with internet wi-fi and not on the 3G network, maxis will still clock all ur usage as 3G data usage, and hence, chargeable. it happens even if you've completely switched off 3G on the iphone. the only way to avoid that is to switch the phone to flight-mode.

may i ask if there's any truth in that? i've not read it anywhere. but in case i missed out, sorry if this has been posted earlier.

another question, is there any iphone user on Celcom Exec data plans? maxis one is actually a bit pricey...looking at my phone usage, its less than RM50 every month (without data) and i'm on iValue150...if i were to sign up for maxis data plan, means additional RM99 = RM250 commitment every month = alot of money!!!

thanks for reading & replyin'

Yes, sometimes they will charge my prepaid balance when I use data even it's not exceeding the usage limits.

unlikely.

i'm only basing this on the fact that my previous blackberry pearl, is able to roam, but wasn't connected to the net.

Yup, I have been watching the built-in counter closely but my usage patterns are pathetic. I can't even use 100MB of data. I'm planning to be on IM for the entire working day just to use up. But text chat aren't using a lot data though. Hmmm...

I think Maxis is playing this 'disadvantage' to their own advantage. I mean if you can charge your customers 'inaccurately' due to your architecture limitations, why improve it? Lets continue play it to its advantage. Hehehe...

But I think Maxis for the very least should include some sort of indicator in their online customer service. That interface has been there since when? Ages! Anyway the iPhone's usage counter although not accurate shouldn't be inaccurate for more than 10%. Otherwise its not an indicator and why put it there in the first place. So I guess put in a buffer of 10%. Anything more, Maxis is crapshooting.

Hmm... have you tried disabling data roaming on iPhone or any smartphones for that matter. It works the same way. I was overseas 2 months back and I had that turned on and my recent bills recorded nothing from countries I visited. Although I tried deliberately using data but it wouldn't work. So I guess that setting works.

@ davidmak

legally speaking, it is always good to have disclaimers you see (that is why networks stipulate that it may take up to 2 working days for any charges to appear on the bill)

it is dead on accurate and it turns out vice versa, you can buat a lot of kecoh!

besides, isn't great if the network continues to "mislead" you in an attempt to lure you to exceed your allowance? a great business strategy!

Yes understood the holes and the need for an escape clause. But I feel adding 10% buffer on that counter is very safe. Lets just say Maxis's system recorded a run-off of 30-50%, thats a whole lot of deviation. By best practices, standard deviations should not be more than 10% (mostly). Otherwise we have a case to complain about inconsistency in services and pressure Maxis or whoever the service provider to improve on.

Yeah, i am using that smile.gif it is useless.. not sure why, i do a lot synchronization and WIFI connection instead of 3g/edge, and the meter is so NOT accurate, i can easilyy up to 2-3GB and last month 9gb ..

but lucky thing is,, my maxis bills display utilization is 200MB only ( FYI, im on ivalue100 tongue.gif)

Actually the counter will not count data transferred via WIFI and your USB cable (during synchro). The counter is specifically for cellular data and it is why it was named accordingly. But it would be strange if the counter counts data transferred via WIFI.

a lot maxis customer service bashing here... haha. i guess im one of the lucky ones. so far all my calls to maxis was greeted with a friendly and helpful person. there's one i'd like to highlight. i dont own the iphone tho so this is pretty OOT, but juz wanna share with u guys (and back up maxis a bit tongue.gif).

i was not satisfied with my maxis broadband that i sent an email to them asking what should i do to terminate my plan. i think not more than 3 days after that, the customer service gave me a call. i was in class that time so i told her to call the next day. surprisingly, the same person actually DID call me up the next day indeed. the girl was kind enough to clearly tell me what to do to terminate the plan, and for that im very impressed.

at last i didnt terminate my plan. but that was mostly because i found out that celcom line was terrible at my area LOL. whoever was at the other end of that line, keep it up.

yeah, i know.. actually i dont think i used WIFI that much

it happened 2 month ago i do a lot DATA(Movies/songs/podcast etc) Transfer from Notebook to iPhone via USB, the usage show up to 10GB at month end.

Funny thing is the usage counter is not updated live. eg when i check the usage on the first day it shows 100MB, then after 2-3 days i check again and it shows 105MB, and i did a soft reset then it shows 3gb. (I can tell you my actual data usage is very low becuz i turned edge/3g off manually)

So for me, this is not accurate at all.. unless i dont do large multimedia files syncronisation

my usage display in iphone - April 9GB , Maxis bills shows 150MB , iPhone - May 3GB, maxis bill shows 250MB blink.gif duno how to keep track now, but i dont think i need to worry, cuz i know my usage will be around 200-300MB p/mth smile.gif

@davidmak,
You're absolutely right - the damn "meter" on my phone tells me I haven't been using much too and I subscribed to the damn RM99 plan! However, it will definitely come in handy when I get to a place and need Internet Tethering biggrin.gif I foresee the usage to increase tremendously then.

In fact, to ensure my battery life is a little longer, I'm thinking of just disabling Wifi (doesn't look like I be utilising the entire "unlimited" plan anyways!).

@daryl.k,
I'd been using the iPhone for about 11 months now; during that time I've travelled to a couple of countries but haven't been charged a single cent on roaming charges because there's an option to switch OFF roaming.

As to when you're in town locally and wish to switch off 3G/EDGE charges, all U need to do is to disable APN and it'll stop data from streaming into your phone - thus far, no dispute on my Maxis bill.

There are several forummers here who are on Celcom and DiGi plans so yes the iPhone will work on those plans too. Please refer to pinned thread on iPhone for more information biggrin.gif

@vui_msia,
Since your monthly usage is less than 500MB why don't U just sign up for the 500MB plan and pay less instead of the RM99 plan? Or, are U NOT on the RM99 plan *grins*
