(sorry this was copy from "best subwoofer discussuion topic" to this side)hello frens, anybody using Jl Audio Fathom,Sun Fire,Rel or Velodyne product subwoofer?
Example:JL Fathom F113,Sunfire HRS-12,Rel subwoofer and Velodyne SPL Ultra series.
Pls omit Hsu Research and SVS brand as they don't have local distributor and we cannot even go for the sub demo in Malaysia.
In case the above(Hsu Research and Svs) got problem, what should we do since no local dealers and we have to deal with the direct factory and wait for the spare parts for weeks.(although they were teaching how 2 fix it via internet but not everybody know how to use the internet very well)
I went to many of the forum site, most of them were discussing Jl Audio Fathom,Sun Fire,Rel or Velodyne and being describe as one of the best subwoofer brand company in the world(excluding Wilson Benesch Torus which at different price catagories and quality)
Lately i observe that there is a forum started by a local members comparing SVS sub Velodyne sub.
1st you must let me know do you have the right facilities to test the above(SVS and Velodyne)sub or just by a normal room home theatre set up instead of a right facilities which is a studio set up.
I don't 100% believe it since everybody had different listening level as most of the local don't have the right facilities to test the true quality of the subwoofer and lately this JL Fathom model F113 was being recommended by as a no buy good product(do you know this product was awarded by PerfectVision january 2007 issue as the Subwoofer of the year and not to mention that another award has been awarded by Home Theatre and Sound January 2007 issue as a product subwoofer of the year too)
I think the local buyers should not been brain wash by the local forum user as you must REVIEW EVERY PRODUCT by yourself so that you will satisfy and will not made any mistake when buying it.
So read more review of it over the internet of magazine and most important is go for the demo because everybody got different listening level unless you have a real studio facilities to test and compare it.
Thanks and hope you all won't make the wrong choice.

Hello Yk Ng,

Thanks for posting and welcome to LYN (I see you just joined today). I find your post a little confusing because I don't know what exactly is the message you are trying to convey.

I agree with you that ideally we should demo a product before buying it. However, I don't agree that you need 'real studio facilities' in order to do the demo. Firstly, how can we find such a studio in Malaysia? Even if there was such a studio would the results be applicable to your home room? I think as long as the room variable is kept constant, you can do a meaningful comparison between 2 subwoofers.

Even if you look at professional equipment reviews, I think the review is done in the reviewers own home/room (not a studio).
By reading this it seems to me that you're suggesting that reading on forums is good enough and just because people are discussing brands like Jl Audio Fathom, Sun Fire, Rel or Velodyne that you can assume they are "one of the best subwoofer brand company in the world". I'm sure if you read enough, other brands like Hsu, SVS, Epic, etc. are also positively discussed on many forums.
You don't have to believe it. That's why a shootout is being organized so people can listen for themselves. Sure the testing ground isn't a 'real studio facilities' but it is a real life example of a typical room (the kind that most people have). And at least the tester has a SPL meter so both subs can be set at same output for fair comparison. As far as practicality is concerned this is ok.
You can check out the subwoofer owner's list on the preceding pages. This is not a full list by the way since it is up to owner's to voluntarily disclose.

Hello Jchong,

Thanks for your posting.I have no objection on your subwoofer shootout.I were mainly refering were it done in a professional way, just like do you have the frequency generator to measure the entire frequency or do you have the acoustical instrument to test the room environment?
Just by using SPL metre wil not get the correct measurement or rather the biggest boom will be the winner?

And by the way i dun quite agree about the review matter as they are done in a very professional way.
What about WhatHifi magazine?(they are more on Britsih products)
And what about Home Entertainment(they are more on American products) but they 2 do have the state of art testing facilities.
What I am mainly refering that forum members should audition more products before jumping ship(wrong ship mean bigger hole in your pocket)

What really annoyed me was one of the member refering JL Audio Fathom is a no buy issue, considering that this subwoofer having won so many award.
I have no objection forum members getting Hsu,Epic products even they are highly review.
But what happen if the products go bonker,of course the manufacturer will replace the parts, but how long?1 week?2 weeks?
And not everybody is a qualified electrical engineer and even till today still not many ppl does not know how 2 use the internet very well.

Anyway this is the end of the discussion so wish you the best of luck in pursuing your dream.
