In Malaysia, only the GTS is offered and is marketed as the GT. However, the national car manufacturer Proton has renewed cross-licensing and technology transfer agreements with Mitsubishi as of October 2008, and the new Proton Waja for the 2010 model year will be a re-badged 8th-Generation Lancer but with possibly different engine options.

I think its unlikely that the waja replacement will be based on the current lancer GT/GTS. I think its more likely to be the Lancer Fortis as available in Taiwan only. Nevertheless, it does look good too.

Last i heard they are going to merge both Perdana and Waja under 1 segment. So most prolly this Lancer will be replacing both. It looks like inbetween this 2 models anyway.

a complete rebadge? i mean, just the badge change?

its gonna be awful.

i hope its not. i mean, platform sharing, technology sharing is okay. but complete rebadge? come on.

if the current one can be design fully by malaysians for malaysians, i wonder why the second gen waja is designed in total by japanese for malaysians.

thats backward i believe.

They derive it as Platform Sharing and Technology Sharing which is a good point. From technology point of view, its a good pickup from Proton to be doing this to layout for their future models. It was rumoured that, there is an exchange equivalent where MMC will be virtually rebadging Persona/Gen2 as MMC with minor mods on exterior while it is the same for Proton. The agreement ties that the main platform and shell will not be modified (means the metal part will not be altered). Please take this as a grain of salt, while i myself are not sure on the genuinity of the above rumoured.

One thing for sure is, Proton would benefit from the technology and platform.

Yup, since they already developed Exora, so from it they could spawned to more variants of models.

what is like EXORA?

i mean, it is based on something else? the chinese mpv? whats the name i cant recall.

i am hoping its more than badge switching, thats what i mean. platform sharing, yes. but if u do a NAZA, which involves something like writing 'NAZA' onto 'Pugeout' (read 206), engineering wise its a waste for us to support proton as national entity.

as far as new model development cost is concern, its way too much for them to spend. thats why i read some people saying exora platform is share-able. thats mean proton no need to pay high-blown cost for chasis if they to roll out any new model. and yes, JV with any other makes, with proton pay some fortune to use their stuffs; i.e platform/ chasis, proton is able to minimize the production cost.

last time i saw somebody wrote SING or SENG project by proton, which involves a turbocharge/supercharge campro or something. thats gonna be yummy brows.gif

and ah, i dont wanna see some perdana/ waja that 100% looks like a lancer. or fortis. please.

I dun think so.

Proton has their "successful" CamPro
I think they might throw it in, but factors like engine mounting, etc might cost more.

But then again, Proton is rather well known for their, er, whatchacallit? stupiditiy.

but i read some news..they would most probably use mitsu engine on the new waja...

they will continue improving campro and they are also looking for alternative engine from renault , petronas and mitsu also

StarBiz revealed today that the Mitsubishi vehicle to be provided to Proton is the new Lancer, which will be used to replace the Waja. A quick check with sources inside Proton revealed that the vehicle would pretty much be a Lancer with only minor changes to the design, even less than what Mitsubishi Taiwan has done to their version of the Lancer.

The Lancer Fortis is shown in the image above, just compare it to the original Lancer (chopped by Theophilus with Proton badges) shown below, it’s a world of a difference! So the good news is our version will likely keep the Lancer’s original aggressive looks.

Click for enlarged image

The new Lancer-Waja will likely be priced at a higher price point than the current Waja CPS, but lower than the Perdana. We’ll also get the GEMA series of engines that comes with the Lancer, though it’s not clear at this moment which one. The GEMA engine is available in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4 liter displacements.

http://paultan.org/archives/2008/12/05/nex...ancer-platform/

So yes sounds promising at the moment, with proton pricing

im looking forward to the new waja..i just hope that proton maintains the mitsu engine and invecs III transmission. well, if it is just a change of badge, all the better.. who cares about an all new home made car, or some sort of engineering breakthrough, most consumers want a well established car and not like the 1st gen gen2 with campro engine.

For instance, have a look at myvi as an example.

Not necessarily

I believe it wise for Proton to rebadge instead of self-developing its own model in that price range, because the market for such cars in that price range, is smaller than Proton's main market, which is B-segment car and C-segment car that costs around RM 5x,xxx or so...

In a way, it is cost effective

it should be priced around old Waja pricing, below Exora. thats what i heard from Proton SA.
powered by mitsu 1.8L GEMA engine. probably 4B10?

and furthermore..
Mitsu will get their hands on Exora and Persona.

soon, some of Proton's car might be powered by Petronas E01 engine family.. like Exora and Neo GTI.

E01e/w is never intended to be a mass production engine, the engine is made based on small and hand-built environment. many elements found on it is actually quite high end which is unlikely to be doen under the economical scale , and to change everything into what proton can mass production , it would involve damn lot of reengineering and tweaking to ensure that the engine is economical to be run and built . that is why the engine has never been used for the production for proton, many high performance part just aren't suitable for niche player like proton which has to be profit minded first.

Should worth some price since the badge is MMC. If it makes it to Japan then its a good news. I recon it will channel to 3rd world countrys that Proton have yet to reach.

Proton Exora blooms in town

By Andy Hum in Jakarta , Indonesia

Seven seats, engineered by Lotus and at a price of under $60,000
The Exora will be the new cheap MPV

Proton’s first MPV has arrived in Singapore with a price tag of $57,999 with COE. Called ‘Exora’, it will mainly rival the aging $67,000 Kia Carens.

It comes with a 1.6-litre ‘CamPro CPS’ engine made by Proton, with the aid of Lotus, and a new modular chassis, also developed with the help of Lotus. The in-line four powerplant generates 125hp and 150Nm of torque, helping the nearly 1.4-tonne Exora get from 0-100km/h in 15.5 seconds.

We got to test drive the new Exora in Jakarta recently and also spoke to lead engineer for the Proton Exora project, Mohd Najib bin Mahmood about how they flexed their owner muscles with Lotus, a two-door coupe and their plans for the near future.

Interview with Mohd Najib bin Mahmood, lead engineer, Platform Management Division

CB: How did Lotus help to develop this car?

Najib: Lotus is good in chassis engineering, setting up the suspension of the car, NVH, and also for ride and handling. Lotus came to Malaysia during its early development stages to test, calibrate and tune the chassis, and it was further developed in the UK to troubleshoot any parameters.

CB: What took Proton so long to come up with an MPV?

Najib: Actually, this is our fourth attempt to introduce an MPV. But this is the one that really makes us proud. It has a very intelligent platform that we developed for Proton so that in the near future, we can derive a number of cars from it. From this platform, we can produce sedans, large cars and SUVs.

At this point, Najib shares that a medium-segment sedan prototype is already being tested.

CB: Why was it not engineered to achieve a five-star crash test result?

Najib: We achieved a four-star rating with the body compartment, but in order to achieve five stars, it requires additional side and curtain airbags. The most important thing is the body; the strength of the A- and B-pillars, side bars and the roof have already higher safety ratings. Introducing those airbags will increase the cost of the car. The most important are the driver and passenger’s airbags.

CB: Will there be a two-door coupe based on this platform?

Najib: Yes, in fact we are just waiting for direction from our management. If they want it, this platform can be used.

Brokerages see improved outlook for auto sector

By YEOW POOI LING

Festive promotions and launch of new models expected to lift TIV in second half

PETALING JAYA: While the fourth quarter is seasonally lower for car sales, the threat of a “serious slowdown” in the auto industry is waning.

TA Securities noted that the total industry volume (TIV) in the first eight months, at 351,599 units, had covered more than 70% of the Malaysian Automotive Association’s full-year target of 500,000 units.

“We believe the numbers have not imputed the effect of the festive season. Merdeka and festive promotions would only kick-in in September, at the earliest. Underpinning this, our outlook for September is very positive,” the brokerage said in a recent report.

“It would not be too optimistic to say that the worst is over for the industry. There is potential upward movement in TIV numbers in the second half of 2009,” it added.

HwangDBS Vickers Research, meanwhile, said vehicle sales in September would remain firm as buyers normally rushed to take delivery of new cars ahead of the Hari Raya celebrations.

Following that, buyers might prefer to take delivery of their new vehicles next year, it said.

OSK Investment Bank said consumers could look forward to new models to be released in the next couple of months, led by Perodua’s new MPV slated for launch by end-November.

Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd is expected to release its completely-knocked-down (CKD) Teana, a D-segment sedan, in the first half of next year, while Proton Holdings Bhd plans to launch its new Waja, which is based on a rebadged Lancer Fortis.

“The Myvi replacement will be out by the first half of 2011 as its five-year lifespan expires. From the end of 2011 to early 2012, Tan Chong intends to look at the possibility of bringing in a CKD model to introduce its new line-up,” the research house said.

Next month, the Government is anticipated to release the revised National Automotive Policy in conjunction with Budget 2010. In competing head on with neighbour Thailand, the Government’s possible incentives may include tax holidays on export duties and corporate income, it added.

If further liberalisation took place, major carmakers were likely to set up full-fledged manufacturing lines and establish research and development centres, thus benefiting existing CKD assemblers like the Naza Group, UMW-Toyota and Honda Malaysia due to their existing collaborations with local franchise holders, OSK said.

Auto parts suppliers were also expected to benefit, especially those with ongoing long-term relationships with CKD assemblers and carmakers, it said, adding that this could encourage consolidation among vendors given the current fragmented segment.

rumoured to be 1.8 or 2.0 which is not a campro engine. Maybe a non Mivec Mitsu engine.

Just got back from the proton platinum showroom at damansara mutiara.
Went there to consult the sales person and she told me that it looks very much like the current mitsubishi lancer
She didnt specify which current model it will replace but said the waja or perdana.

Enjine wise will be a 1.8 or 2.0 while the price range will be around 70-80k

So i guess from the price it should be a replacement for the waja.

Cheers
