BlackBerry 6.1 Application Platform Announced At DEVCON Asia 2011 – Building on The Power Of BlackBerry 6

user posted image

During the first General Session Keynote at DEVCON Asia 2011, Tyler Lessard, VP of Global Alliances and Developer Relations for RIM, announced the upcoming BlackBerry 6.1 Application Platform. According to the presentation, BlackBerry 6.1 will build on the power of BlackBerry 6. Developers will also be able to take advantage of new tools and APIs including:

Magnetometer / Digital compass APIs
Open GL-ES 2.0
Window API (overlay native app surfaces)
Event-based geo-fencing location APIs
Enhancement to barcode API’s for additional formats and custom decoding
and MUCH MORE
The new BlackBerry Developer Tools 6.1 should be available for download soon since BlackBerry 6.1 will probably be released in “the next quarter or two”. One step closer to the BlackBerry Super Phone but not close enough since this announcement tells us BlackBerry 6 will be around for a bit. Still good news though!
