QUOTE(argonauty @ Feb 21 2010, 10:12 PM) Dear experts, Hi, Im thinking of getting myself a BB device with corporate rate which is cheaper since company is a Maxis corporate customer. http://www.maxis.com.my/blackberry/business/package.asp I have some newbie questions on BES and BIS. 1) If im on BES, do i have to through the corporate proxy everytime i want to connect to internet to surf? Reason im asking is because the IT people blocked some website and IM services if im connected to internet via the office network. 2) If let say i buy it outside and take BIS package, correct me if im wrong, i can only connect to company email via OWA ( my company email runs on microsoft exchange platform) So what are the differences between BIS and BES? The other option is by getting Celcom package. 250 monthly commitment 12 months contract. http://www.celcom.com.my/biz/bd-mobile-ema...bbbold9700.html Thanking you in advance! first of all, im not the experts.. but let me try to answer some of ur questions.. 1. On BES, its totally depending on ur company policy and your BES Admin to route your internet thru proxy or not.. both can be configured thru the BES. so its better for you to check with your BES admin on this.. even if the company policy to route your internet browsing thru the proxy, BES admin can really free u up from the proxy if he wants to.. BES admin is very powerful in that sense.. 2. I believe OWA is the web version of the exchange aka webmail. to be exact, the one that u sign up for personal use, BIS, will not be able to be used for BES. in order for u to used the BES, first of all u need is BES Client Access License.. every BES users need 1 license. Do check with your BES admin whether your company have enough of this. and ask him also if you can use one of them because some company policy, u need a strong recommendation from your manager to get one of those license.. if im not mistaken, the CAL itself would cost them rm200 per license but its a one time only. no need for renewal or anything.. secondly, your phone line must be registered under the corporate package. the one that u sign up is considered a personal package. you wont be able to activate the device on BES if you have only BIS underneath your subscription.. if u know ur telco account manager very well, you can ask him to move your personal BIS to the corporate package, then only u can use the BES.. the thing i wrote here is purely based on my own experience.. i dont know about others.. |

The other option is by getting Celcom package. 250 monthly commitment 12 months contract. http://www.celcom.com.my/biz/bd-mobile-ema...bbbold9700.html Thanking you in advance! I'm using Celcom BIS and my company's BES. 1 - You only get email, contacts, task and memo sync thru BES, everything else is on BIS, so that' fine. No worries 2 - Yes, you can get OWA and don't need BES. However, if your company's exchange server is protected with Microsoft ISA (Internet Security & Acceleration) server, then OWA using BlackBerry is not possible unless they willing to make changes on ISA and Exchange. To find out what changes need to be done, google these term - "blackberry OWA ISA", you should get many tips and tricks on how to do it. Of course, your company's IT administrator has to do it. Another alternative for you... Subscribe to BIS and use as normal. Then, get your IT admin to setup a server-side forwarding for all your incoming email to your blackberry email address. So you will get your company's email on blackberry (as a copy). When reply to email, you can setup an "Auto BCC" in Blackberry to send a copy back to your company's email address so you get a copy of all the email you sent. Then, in your outlook client (on desktop/laptop), setup a filtering rules to move all the "Auto BCC" item into "Sent Items". Done! I found out this is less work for the IT admin and they are more willing to help you to setup a server-side forwarding as that doesn't mess around with the ISA server security settings. However, with this method, you only get email over the air, for contacts, task and memo, you have to sync it like once a day using USB cable via desktop/laptop. Hope this helps... |
