It is sugar. Sugar isn't that bad, but the "sugar" used in carbonated drinks like coke/pepsi/sprite/etc. is Corn Syrup which gives the taste of sugar without its benefits. In other words, corn syrup doesn't metabolise like sugar and thus leads to the fat gain.

Yea I do, spending less this year, but I still treat myself to a good restaurant at least once or twice a month (used to be once a week )
