Firmware 4.2 now available. update lah. for modded, careful lah.

"This update provides behind-the-scenes fixes that will not affect features but will improve overall system performance"

updatre:
for softmodders, 4.2 will stop your homebrew from working! so don't update if u softmodded your wii.

softmodded wii is like that. banyak hassle. is hard to give u instructions step by step, coz if varies depending on your softmod setup. If u didn't know you bought a softmodded wi, go back to the shop, and demand him to fix it, or explain why he sold u a softmodded wii. If u knew it is softmodded, then relax la, is like that. equipt yourself with some knowledge and u can solve any problems that comes your way (hacker talk).

I am planning to buy Wii. Went to Tesco Mutiara Dsara. Was qouted rm990. He said they are authorised seller.
But now I found out from this forum there is Japan, Korean and US version. Getting VERY confused.... what is a good version to buy? and where?

Thank you.
*
U need to choose. I tell it as it is so. There is only 2 options that applies to you if u going to buy in malaysia:
1. Japan/Korean/US version modded wii (offical name: modified wii, but is well known as 'modded wii')
- Got lot of hassle. some games don't play. Sometimes need to update chip firmware. If u not careful, your wii may even not start up, although it is getting very rare these days. if u don't want to ignore these problems, u need to learn a few things about wii mods (from forums and friends)
- Nintendo don't like modded consoles because it takes business away from them. So your future may be uncertain, coz nintendo updates their firmwares often to combat these things.
- Its 2nd hand. don't believe the seller if he says it is new. Cause it is not.

2. US version unmodded wii
- Guarantee no hassle. I have one, so i know. every game plays. No hacking required. No need learn new things about wii mods.
- Play original games only.
- It is the way it comes out of the factory
- Its a new console.

If rm990, it should be option1 above. else its a good deal (or maybe is due to the recent US price drop)! There are other options but trust me it won't apply to you coz they are niche. so just focus on the 2 options above. Just choose base on your preference. good luck

Added on October 4, 2009, 7:23 amwhy is the sentence "- Can play boot legged games" removed by Prime_Minister?
I am giving her the facts so that she can choose base on non-bias information. i am not telling her how she can play boot legged games, or where she can get boot legged games, or who she can get boot legged games from.

At where i can buy da cheapest nintendo wii?anything i should take note at?like full spec, japan o US modified....give me some guidance  tongue.gif

Refer to my reply to wonderwoman. i don't know actually where is the cheapest. ask around. Forummer 'kyoyogami' is known to sell unmodded wiis cheaper then the market. that's what i know. wii has only 1 spec, but has 4 region versions. of course choose the US region version, coz games in malaysia are all sold for that version. Stay away from japan, european and korean ones, coz they all modded. my advice is do get the unmodded, coz it is hassle free. trust me on this.

ramz's right, unmodded is hassle-free.

I have a modded version, took me days to figure out what's going on in my Wii. And fixed it, yea. Now a pro, but took a long time to the point that I think I should be studying for exams instead of playing around.

Unless you are softmod-eager, stay away from modded ones. Discard the price gap, unmodded = Epic Win.

and it doesn't end there. when nintendo introduce another firmware update, u be doing the whole process again. u might not want to update, but the newer games will need the update else u can't play. don't think the wii is like ps2. ps2 mod is sap sap soi. ps3/xbox360/wii are newer generation consoles, and it is getting harder to mod, and it will get even harder in the future. So get use to it and buy orignal. don't expect to get free games anymore, that is old thinking.

Nintendo of America's consumer service department has received less than 200 inquiries regarding system menu update (SMU) 4.2 since it launched on September 28, 2009.

This is from a U.S. installed base of over 21,000,000 Wii consoles. A significant number of these inquiries were resolved quickly and easily right over the phone. For the remaining inquiries we have advised consumers that the symptoms described usually occur when a Wii console has been modified.

Anyone who owns Wii hardware with unauthorized technical modifications may face hardware inoperability after downloading SMU 4.2. As always, if anyone is experiencing problems with their Wii console after downloading any SMU please contact Nintendo consumer service at 1-800-255-3700.

Meh, that's what happened with NFS: Undercover, but we discovered that what we need was just some files. No firmware are currently a must-need for games and I don't think that is happening soon. Games uses I/O System Files (Which differ from firmware)  wink.gif

Anyway, that is techy talk. And no kyo, still haven't updated and can't find a reason to. blush.gif  blush.gif

PS: Wii-modding iz hard...

Also, heard that some unmodded consoles got BRICKED while updating. Weird no?

One more thing, imagine if the wii's processor use intel i7 , 80GB SSD and Nvidia gtx295 must be teh awesumoz  rclxm9.gif rclxm9.gif

most, if not all games comes with a firmware update of a certain version. When game loads, it will check the system firmware version, and if it is earlier then firmware it has on disc, it will do a mandatory update. So it is a must need for wii games. but modders have done so much to workaround the mandatory update

i updated to 4.2 coz the wii shop doesn't work anymore for 4.1, then i notice a mail from nintendo, so wihtout thinking i update la. No problem also. But to be honest i don't notice any difference 4.2 brings beside making my wii shop work again. oh yes, one small thing, i notice that when u leave your game idle, the screen goes dark. this is definitely 4.2 coz i didn't notice it in 4.1

if from US, it should be unmodded. modding in US is illegal!

To check, ask your friend. or put in a boot legged disc and see if it runs, or see if u have homebrew channel installed.

wii remote=rm 160
nunchuk = rm 70
wii motion plus = rm 90

so a premium controller is rm320 per piece. wow, that's expensive. never notice until i did this exercise.

did i hear guitar hero? it plays all the guitar heros from guitar hero legends of rock to guitar hero 5. to get a full band up, u will need mic, guitar, drums and another guitar (bass). the whole bundle with game is about rm700 onwards. u can get even cheaper if u buy guitar hero world tour bundle.

yes remote + nunchuk + motion plus. premium controller is when u want to play games with nearly one-to-one control (every twist of the wrist, or slightest movement can be detected). As of today there are 4 games like this (google them): PGA tour 10, Wii sports resort, virtual tennis 2000, grand slam tennis.
wii motion plus is not a must to have right???
right. except for wii sports resort. its mandatory for wii sports resort.

btw, what is the price range for games?are there pirated?
about rm180 average. at this price of course not pirate. we malaysians want to be pirate free gaming country by 2020. read the vision 2020 manifesto again, its in there.

sounds complicating. but i guess its still worth the hassle. I just buy the game and load it into my machine and play. but i guess that's not the way to do it. looks like this is a better way. we feel proud there lota great wii engineers out there.

I have a question on Rock Band 2 DLC. I tried googling it but haven't found a satisfactory answer.

If i want to change wii console (as in buy a new one), is it possible for me to transfer my DLC to the new console? note that is ok if i can't play the DLCs on the old console any longer. If yes, then how?

I think you can just copy the tickets of the dlc from ur old wii to ur new wii ... im just guessing i remember i read somewhere abt this issue.

Why buying a new Wii ka ?
*
after further research, i found out can, but u need to send it to nintendo. but since there is no local presence, so need to send to nintendo US. So, i am out of luck. dlc sucks like that. if your console konk, or u change console, or when you buy the next wii HD, here goes your dlc. i think your VC and wii ware also u can say bye bye.

Thinking of selling/giving to my relative, and get another one. but looks like i have to ask him to get his own.

yeah, that's sad for wii. coz ps3/xbox360 don't have the same problem.

so to summarize, if have the following intentions:
1. change your wii coz your wii rosak
2. if u have a friend that share the wii, so some games are his and some games are yours. Now you going separate ways. So you need to get a new console. The games that are yours, u want to transfer your game/game data/dlc over to your new console. and the ones that are his can remain in the old console.
3. If Wii 2 comes out in the future, i hope we can transfer game data to the new console, but i doubt we can do that without involving nintendo (99% sure). so although wii 2 in backward compatible, u have to keep your old console to play old games that rely on game data/dlc

then u are screwed for now. maybe nintendo will decide to setup shop here in malaysia in the near future, say year 303030, then u be ok. but until then, u are screwed.

of course u can do the illegal way, but if u want to go to heaven, or it is too much hassle for a busy man like me (i belong to the later group), don't even think about it.

I have a friend in the US who has his Wii Shop purchases transferred over to a new Wii when the old one broke by exchanging e-mail with Nintendo. So maybe for those who buy new Wii and dun want to repair the old one can just do this and the purchases from the Wii Shop can transfer. The spoilt Wii will not be able to access Wii Shop again after you do that tho, if you get it repaired.

malaysia sells us version. which is english. in malaysia japanese version, which is in japanese, is difficult to find.

if u go to a less reputable shop, they will confuse further with japanese/us/korean version etc.... and will continue to confuse u about undocumented features and all that jazz. in the more reputable shops, they only sell us version, so trust latter shop and go for us version.

maybe the drum set not working. Send it back if its the case. is it the kit goes by the name "Crazy drums"?

btw, if your wii is modded, it is also known to cause drum kit detection problems. ignore if doesn't apply to you.
