I know that there are some Malay family names.
Wan
Nik
Ku
Syed
The "Syed" is actually from Middle East, so they should not be considered as "Malay", per se.
How about the others?

Malay doesnt have Surname
and all the "surname" u saw in the malay name is the adaptation from other race's surname style. Just like how chinese adapt malay enviroment and we call them baba & nyonya |

QUOTE(convivencia @ May 12 2009, 02:54 AM) I know that there are some Malay family names. those are not family names, nor is it surnames. those are hereditary title prefixes that doesn't necessarily amount to a family name. for example, family/surnames shouldnt disintegrate after mix-marriage. for example, female Raja marries a normal guy would produce a new lineage of Megat (male) and Puteri (female). same goes with tengku, engku, teuku and ku.Wan Nik Ku Syed The "Syed" is actually from Middle East, so they should not be considered as "Malay", per se. How about the others? malays do not have family names in the sense of western family names or chinese family names. but there have been numerous families that have assigned surnames to themselves. for example, Jeslina HASHIM bt Hashim, where HASHIM have become her family name. |

anyway as a sidenote, please be informed that an angmor whose name is John Smith or Alan Brown should be referred to as Mr Smith or Mr Brown respectively, NOT Mr John or Mr Alan.
I cant tell you how many times i've had to correct malaysians (and consequently reprint thus wasting my ink) on this. |

Yep all those people with this kind of name are poser who 'think' this name make them special. SYED is for one the 'scam' of em' all as it originate from Arab but somehow they steal it to make them look Arabic. Sometimes they only marry Syed with Sharifah.
In Sejarah, we call em Zaman Jahiliyah |

QUOTE(WillHung @ May 12 2009, 11:33 AM) if you are to be referred to as a mr, then the correct way is to use your surname/patrynomic name. i prefer them to call me by my name. if i only deal with the orang putih for a short time, i already dont mind them calling me by my fathers nameyou are not "correcting" anyone. |

QUOTE(Ibrahimovic @ May 12 2009, 11:33 AM) Yep all those people with this kind of name are poser who 'think' this name make them special. SYED is for one the 'scam' of em' all as it originate from Arab but somehow they steal it to make them look Arabic. Sometimes they only marry Syed with Sharifah. +1 In Sejarah, we call em Zaman Jahiliyah malay dun have family name.they only carry fathers name. 100% malay name now is arab word. word like raja, its origin from sanskrit + hindu. indian also got raja..raja gopal...raja-nikanth.. raja sivaji FTW! |

QUOTE(edwardstevens @ May 12 2009, 11:43 AM) i know they didnt do anything wrong. just want to tell them the correct way of calling me. is it wrong for me to do so? if your name is ali bin abu, they either call you ali or in formal situations, mr abu. if you insist on being called mr ali in a formal conversation then yes, you will look like someone who is ignorant of social etiquettes. calling ali bin abu mr ali in a formal conversation is not "correct". just because you prefer it doesnt make it "correct". |

QUOTE(samuraikacang @ May 12 2009, 12:44 PM) not all megat are from indonesia Megat is a hereditary title given to male descendants of the ancient Royal House of Pagar Ruyung. Its Minangkabau pronouncation is 'Magek' - derived from the word 'Maha Gaek' which means 'Great One'.megat sometimes derived from a Perak Princess marrying to a commoner hence the children will be title Megat for male or Puteri for female. there's a difference between Wan in Kedah/Perlis with Wan in Kelantan. The female members of the family are given the hereditary title Puteri. Its Minangkabau pronouncation is 'Puti' which obviously means Princess. The Megats and the Puteris are royalty by birth. However, it is a common practice to name a child with the titles Megat or Puteri whenever the mother is of Royal Blood (Raja or Tengku)and the father is a commoner. This is due to the fact that in Minangkabau tradition, the status of one's child will depend on their parents. As for Royalties, marrying a commoner is strictly forbidden. Hence, the seniority of the respective parent's families will determine the child's royal status. The idea of having a Megat or a Puteri from a Royal mother and a commoner father was likely based on the lineage of the famous pioneer Megat in the Malay World - Megat Terawis. Megat Terawis was the first Bendahara of Perak and was known by the title Orang Kaya Bendahara Paduka Raja. He was the son of the Daulat Yang Dipertuan Pagar Ruyung. His descendants were holders of the Bendaharaship of Perak. One of his descendants, Megat Menjanas (Orang Kaya Bendahara Paduka Seri Maharaja), married Raja Shah Alam Sayong - a daughter of Sultan Muzaffar Shah II of Perak. Obviously his descendants used the titles Megat and Puteri. Coincidently, the mother was a daughter of a Perak ruler, people have generalised the rule that for individuals with a Royal mother and a commoner father, have the right to use the titles Megat and Puteri for their children. It should be highlighted that the original usage of Megat and Puteri are strictly for the descendants of the Royal Pagar Ruyung lineage. The descendants of Megat Terawis the First Bendahara of Perak still (to this very day) use the titles Megat and Puteri for their names and their children's. Some of the prominent members of the Megat Terawis family are: Dato' Seri Dr Megat Khas Bin Megat Omar Dato' Megat Yunus Bin Megat Mohd Isa Dato' Megat Othman Bin Megat Mohd Ali Dato' Megat Mahmud Bin Megat Ismail Dato' Seri Megat Jaafar Bin Megat Yunus Tan Sri Dato' Megat Zaharuddin Bin Megat Mohd Nor Tan Sri Megat Junid Bin Megat Ayub Datuk Dr Megat Burhainuddin Bin Megat Abdul Rahman Dato' Seri Megat Najmuddin Bin Megat Khas Dato' Megat Mohamed Abdul Wahab Bin Megat Abu Bakar Megat Zaharuddin Bin Megat Shamsudin Megat Abdullah Rafaie Bin Megat Marzuki Megat Mohamad Mentaha Bin Megat Alias |

Peringkat Pertama Zaman purba sebelum kedatangan Islam. |

QUOTE(azarimy @ May 12 2009, 07:47 PM) there's a reason why we dont translate malay/arabic/islamic names into english. Thank you.abubakar in arabic means noble/nobility. I stayed in Middle East couple of years, I understand it's original meaning. But what I am asking is in the Malay context ---> How in the world Malays naming their sons "Abu Bakar" with full knowledge that it means "Burning Ash" in Bahasa Melayu? Please don't get me wrong, I mean no racial or whatever. This is a NAME thread, and we are talking about names. My curiosity lies squarely on what I post above, without any added meaning (hinted or otherwise). This post has been edited by convivencia: May 12 2009, 08:11 PM |

My curiosity lies squarely on what I post above, without any added meaning (hinted or otherwise). similarly if a chinese name with english sounding words doesnt actually carry the english/malay meaning, right? i mean, who in the right mind would give their children's name "Yu Wang Kerr" or "Tong Sam Pah" (i totally made those up) |

I think it's a shame the Malays prefer to use Arabic names and not retain their original traditional Malay names.

It is because we adpted from Islam way.Like if non-Muslim etc: Chinese or Indian convert to islam, they will change their name simmiliar with their old names meaning but toa arabic word. |

They have 30 Million Muslims there. Most of them don't have muslimized names. Some do, but most don't. Still using Chinese names. |

When I sign up for all those international websites, forms or programmes or when they ask me my name, I take my own name + part of my dad's name, since they like 'First and Last' name so much.
Say, my name is Afiq bin Kopi Tiam, I give people the name Afiq Tiam |
