Pos Laju rates go up by 10%

By M. KRISHNAMOORTHY

PETALING JAYA: Sending letters or parcels by Pos Laju now costs 10% more.

The increase, effective March 1 and attributed to rising fuel costs, is on top of the current 5% surcharge.

Pos Laju's chief operating officer Firdaus Azharuddin said most of the courier companies in Malaysia had increased their charges last year.

"We could not introduce it last year because we experienced some technical difficulties, so we absorbed the increase in fuel cost. The cost of aviation fuel has gone up and we are forced to increase the cost," he added.

Fomca chief executive T. Indrani said the 10% increase was not justified.

"It is shocking to find out about the increase when there has been no recent increase in the pump prices of petrol or diesel fuel.

"Even the cost of aviation fuel has declined recently, so I cannot understand why Pos Laju wants to increase its rates."

A check by The Star showed that the increase in rates came with a promise of better service.

A message to customers from Pos Malaysia was headlined, "Quality service is important to us because it is important to you."

"A 10% increase on domestic shipping charges will allow us to

be better equipped in providing you with improved delivery services."

I noticed those who complain in this thread usually are from outside Klang Valley. This is probably due to the courier's small network they are unable to reach many places or lacked of branches to service the area.

I personally does not have much problem receiving and posting items everywhere around Malaysia. Even purchasing from overseas is not a big issue.

Based on my experience, DHL is extremely efficient in handling oversea parcels. Fedex is just almost as good. TNT can go fly kite.

Local couriers are generally ok. However, Gdex do falls into my shitlist. They do not call their customer. I have asked their customer service and the reply is it's their company policy not to call customer. They will come and attempt delivery 2 times and then you will need to pick up from their center. The only other courier who does not call is Poslaju. Still their courier guy will try to call me sometimes.
