Sorry to hear that bro.

Try putting it in a vertical position and see whether it works (or horizontal position, if you placed it in a vertical position in the first place)

Hi,
I bought my ps3 last saturday. I have discussed the potential problem faced by the ps3 with the shopkeeper. He mentioned most possibly the blu-ray lense can get spoilt. The repair cost is around RM300~RM400.
My suggestion is to take great care of your ps3, do not play any pirated discs on it.

There have been a couple of PS3 consoles having premature lens failure despite all original softwares are used, there have been three or four cases in Penang so far. Luckily the shop gives warranty for the lens. Otherwise, RM1.7K plus will go down the drain. sweat.gif

Hmmm..

Try other medias.

DVD videos, PS2 original games, Music CD's.. See whether they work.
It might be your blu-ray game being corrupted (I'm not sure)

(I've never come across this sort of problem before, but it may be it)

Good luck.

If all else fails, bring back to the shop you bought from.

honestly.. i used to have a moded ps2 and play ONLY pirated games. the thing is i NEVER had any problem with my PS2, sometimes some problem with D9 disc only... played for 4 years and the PS2 still working fine.

now that i have ps3 i am hoping to support and play Only original games. Now playing first game already got lens problem (or whatever problem it is). i am really frustrated....

i know got warranty, but we buy in Msia the warranty depends on the shop.. i know the shop but not sure how much i have to pay for repair... really sian...

Added on August 20, 2007, 10:57 pmsunauto, which shop give warranty for lens?

i bought from penang prangin mall Ace. i didn't ask abt warranty when i buy, guess its a mistake.

Dark NT, sorry to hear your problems. IIRC, when u bought the 360, it had hardware problems and u traded in for a PS3, correct? really tough luck.

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=494788

another forumer had a similar problem. hopefully the shop owner can help you out with warranty and repair.

throughout my experience, I felt that the PS1's lense is the best among all.....I am not sure about the PS3 but I heard it had lower durability compared to the PS2 lense

I just noticed something, is there any Blu-Ray drive cleaner or something. hmm.gif We already have DVD drive cleaner. Probably some dust got stuck inside the lense? Just a thought.

Highly unlikely that it's a dust problem. He said that it's a brand new set used for around total of only 15 hours.

I've checked PS3 lens price at ebay is only USD50 + USD20 for shipping so total cost will be USD70. After conversion is only RM250...who said RM300-RM400. Just buy and DIY.

Don't ask me any link because I hate lazy ppl. If I can find it so can you.

just visit GH just now, according to them they don't offer any repair service for PS3 since no part.

I'm not the first one to complaint to them regariding this issue.

What they advised me to do is to contact Sony Singapore through email. Let sony take it from there.

According to that fella again, there is possibility that Sony will do 1 to 1 exchange for the unit. biggrin.gif

But if i'm not mistaken that only applies to SG machine, which mine is a HK huhuhu..

Just drop a mail to them just now. Will update you guys with anything.

Thanx 03 and Tot for advice biggrin.gif

If a lot BD problem bursting out soon, the only safe console left will be Wii!!!
May as well end Sony BD VS HD DVD!!!!

Time bila ko update ke 1.80? Kiranya lepas update tu, terus jadi camtu? hmm.gif

Firmware 1.80 is the first time Sony introduce upscaling feature for DVD and PS1/PS2. Could this be the reason? The lense is stressed out because of upscaling... Just a thought.

Sub... ada banyak tengok DVD ke? Pirate/original?

yup just know bout that sad.gif

talked to few parties already. this is the solution:

send mach to hk to some relative/kenalan (that i don't have) that relative/kenalan will send to svc ctr for repair. also, will collect once it is repaired.

hk svc ctr wont accept courier from malaysia, though i offer them to pay to courier it back.

basically, i'm f**ked sad.gif

spoke to all service center, in Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong they can't do much unless the machine is with them biggrin.gif

tough luck

Added on August 27, 2007, 11:21 ami tried to ask some shop at sg wang yesterday regarding this issue. one of the shop gave me a very shocking answer.

Did you try to put pirated ps2 disc inside?

No.

Did you try to put pirated dvd inside?

Yup.

Haa.. the system got locked already. It's not the lense prob. PS3 have this mechanism to lock system is pirated stuff is inserted.

Hurm...

I highly doubt this is the case. I have personally played many 'Jack Sparrow' DVDs in my PS3 (HK model) and have had no problems. (Although after browsing through this thread, will try and minimize doing so from now on...)

It sounds very implausible that the machine can detect/diffrentiate between pirated goods vs home-made DVD movies... I call shenanigans.

there are ppl out there playing pirated ps2 games via their switch mods. even if the ps3 detected pirated discs, disabling the blu-ray drive is too DRASTIC an action, don't you think? tongue.gif

most probably problem with the laser. i wonder if the problem is really serious or can be DIY fixed via some online guides/tutorial similar to ps2 situation a few years back.

i believe that im the first person opening thread bout ps3 BD ray lens failure...its like early 2007...juz bought it for 2 or 3 months but the lens insist any media.

i ve played some pirated dvd and somehow the play back kinda hicup while in the middle of movie..but after dad...i played BD Games, it still working..

after a few days ive played my ps3 non stop like 17hours..NON STOP!!the BD keep spinning..and i tot thats the main reason my lens kaput..

most interestingly, the lens somehow had a mood to play BD...when i try at my room (normal temp)...it wont detect any media...but when the console send back to the shop (aircond temp)...test it and it work flawlessly!!!

ohh..i hate my ps3...tried asking the shoopkeeper,he said that they can repair it for me.but till now..my ps3 collecting dust...not yet repaired..

dunno exactly is it caused by the temp or the kaput lens or the firmware....

Hi engineered_miri,

My PS3 also kena the same thing ... cannot read any type of discs
And I have the PS3 only for less than 2 months !
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/494788
I now know that it was not due to the firmware ... rather it is hardware related

Now ... only thing I can do is download and play the short demos from PSN cry.gif

I noticed on my machine that when I inserted any type of discs, the blue indicator on the front would instantly turn blue
(on a good working unit, the blue indicator would blink ... i.e, the disc is reading, and only turn blue when the PS3 has decided what type of disc it is)
I also noticed that there were no vibrations on my "kaput" PS3.
I conclude (wrongly ?) that the motor (to rotate the disc) is probably not rotating at all
(is this correct ? Can u confirm it when u open up your PS3 ?)
Maybe it is not the lens error ?
Maybe the disc rotating motor is at fault ?

Any update on your lens replacement ?

bro,

i'm still waiting for the delivery of my lense. I have been reading a few forums and been in discussion with some of the forumers here, most of us and them agreed its due to the lense.

some cases in gameaxis forum they did actually sent to sgp svc ctr, and got it fixed within 4-5 days.

when i called up HK svc ctr, they told me the prob might not only be lense, quite true also lah. but too many cases already reported on the web that indicate its the lense issue.

i'm just taking my chances here. can afford to pay 600++ to send machine to hk so buy a lense from ebay lah. less than 200 inclusive of deliver. the guy sold it to me inf that it will arrive within 2-3 wks. 3 if you are in australia.

manage to get help from one of the forumer, kind enough to do it for me later lah. i'm a dewb when it comes to techy stuff biggrin.gif

just ething will work out well lah.

with all the blue ray tittle, games coming out some more. The thought of not having a working ps3 when pro evo actually comes out later is just plain scary huhuh ..

let me update the list..

list of people that get the PS3 3D Problem (Disc Detection Defect) :
- DarkNT
- engineered_miri
- sub_zero
- arc_archive
- asdf852us

--> mine already sent to shop in sg wang, the tawkey said he will sent my ps3 to hongkong for service & repair as there is no expert technician in malaysia yet to examine & repair the 3D problem, the only cost that i have to pay is the shipping cost to sony service centre in hongkong, & i must wait wait between 3 to 4 months..haha so long, until now i don't know the reason why ps3 can't read the ps3 games, is it because i watched pirated movie in ps3?, or is it because i put pirated ps2 disc in ps3?, or is it because of the firmware? or is it because the lens already k.o?..the list for possible reason keeps going on..

if sonystyle Malaysia launches PS3, it'll be more expensive than paralle imported units.

but warranty and access to official Sony repairwork might be worth the price difference. right now they sell their standalone blu-ray player so expensive, i think they dont want an offical PS3 to kill that product tongue.gif

if you'll willing to take the risk, you may dl videos to dis-assemble and assemble the ps3 videos which comes in a few chapter. lens you may easily obtainable from ebay.

watch it over and over again then only start to dissamble yr ps3 and clean/replace the lens. but replacing the lens need detail knowledge as its a very sensitive device ~not to touch any of the expose copper FFC wire, or IC .. wear a static wrist-band and perform it on a non-static mat which you may get from pasar road.

what is the actual cause of the ps3 suspected lens failure :

1. Often change play format DVD & BD ? as the lens needs to be readjusted to read DVD & BD.
2. Dusty Environment ? Dusty Lense
3. Yr PS3 is place inside a cabinet ? Heat causes the lens to broke
4. Insect went into the ps3 thru the ventilation holes and attached on the IC pin leg due to shortage ? no joke as i repair a few device where this is an actual cause.

from what i know Sony has certain quality controls such as dust test, reliability test, aging test, mechanical drop test, and many more.

Mine just got hit by this problem yesterday, i was playing Ratchet and Clank, at one point in the game, the sound started to crackle and i was getting Auto save failed error messages. I went to a weapons vendor and the screen hanged. When i did a "Quit Game" the PS3 restarted and after that i was not able to read any discs.

I;ve read on the tubes that if your PS3 has freezes or lockups, eject the disc first before attempting to restart/turn off the console (front panel or back switch). This will (dont know true or not) minimise the chance of spoiling the BD-ROM drive.

Wow..i went to playstation.com forum..hell, there was so many cases reported on this, all happen during 2.17 to 2.2 updates..

A brief of what happen to mine,

Was playing COD4, then i experience lost of sound during in game ground war battle..the sound crackle, then fade..then total silence but still able to play games..when i search the forum, theres one user with exact same problem...

I thought it must be some software glitch..so continue, then join new game...when the game begin..i got stuck at waiting for players with clock ticking...then it freeze. Press the PS button and quit..it blanks and stays blank...reset and all hell broke loose...BD cant detect and all shit.

Off for an hour..can detect BD again...then it froze during movie..with disc error..off for hour and you can detect the BD back...it keeps on repeating

Last i detect BD was around 12 pm where i play dave mattews...it play until the opening song then zzzzzz...freeze P(*&^%($(^&#($$^&$(^&$(^&$...somehow i think its not a BD lense problem..must be something running in background that does all this. If its lense, then it should have died straight away. Agree ?? Mine different..it come back on after i shut down but only for a while.. vmad.gif vmad.gif

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDITED

Its 6 am in the morning and i'm still scratching my head..why ? I was thinking there must be something conflicting, i did everything i can to observed the trend on the lights..blue..wifi...then something trigger me, the wifi was blinking heavily when i inserted any disc...wtf, i confirm this again with another BD, yup, its blinking heavily again...then i remember that update 2.2 was supposed to be Blue Ray profile 2.0 which supposed to enable BD internet JAVA thingie, so i went to BD/DVD setting and disable

1. Disc auto start - OFF
2. BD internet connect - Confirm

The latter to ensure that when you poped in the BD, it will ask whether or not to connect to the internet, i select NO...and guess what

I GOT BACK MY BD !!!! CONFIRM CAN PLAY COD4 & ALL MY BD

Now someone really need to take this and s*ove it up SONY A**...go run some test and proof it...if there any network logger, i would have log what ps3 trying to send when we inserted the BD...i'm ASSUMING it must be related to copyright issue/DRM...go on and spread the word on the fix...i'm tired and need to sleep...we'll see tommorow if this fix can hold...finally can listen to my dave mathews (the whole bd without freeze)

My lens is officially dead. tried the setting thingy but still no luck. Haven't played any pirated dvd. I do read in some forum it said sooner or later ur lens will died. My ps3 is only 3 month old. Luckily i know how to change the lens myself, so save a few buck there. Now waiting for the lens. hopefully the problem solved when i change the lens.
Though luck......

Maybe its a 20GB/60GB model, and its already passed the 1 year warranty period.

On the subject, so far any newly launched 40GB model owners having similar problems? Kinda need some reassurance myself tongue.gif

Okay guys, I just got my PS3 back about to try it out, I think they gave me a refurbuished 60 GB -- anyone know how to find out the manufacture date? Go to Singapore Sony and they'll replace it for free in ONE day. Good service.

someone posted a similar thread on the gametrailer forums... how curious! tongue.gif

http://forums.gametrailers.com/showthread.php?t=430634

it seems like it's not that widespread, otherwise popular gaming blogs would have covered it. You sure u guys didnt shove in pirated DVD ar? or marathon dvd movie/bluray movie?

here is a possible solution.

QUOTE
it's your internet connection. it's happened twice to my 40gb. i got one of the new models now where the cd spins while going in. if ya not playing online then disable your internet connection. if it happens DONT QUIT GAME. eject the disc and turn the console off from the standby button. i heard that should stop the lens from dying. haven't tried it yet since i got the recent model but alot of people have suggested it

Actually my ps3 hung a few times when I was playing GTA4 back when the connection was crappy. I always ejected the disc before restarting by pressing the standby button and all is still good.

kool bro, that would be awesome.

Personally I exchanged by PS3 just like that , one to one (that time my ps3's wifi thingy broke down)

Guess it was my lucky day, as that time I saw a lot of sony reps dressed to kill, maybe their boss was around)really lucky that day.

Okay guys, don't know if anyone's had this happen, but this what just happened to me 15 mins ago:
I recently brought my 1yr-old JP PS3 to my bro's place (lending it to him so he can play MGS4). So I bring it over, set it up, setup wifi network, and then it's go time: Inserted the MGS4 disc...

...and nothing happens. Disc does not appear anywhere in XMB.

I eject and re-insert multiple times, and nothing. The PS3 loading icon appears in the top-right for a while, then nothing. I can definitely feel the BD drive spinning the disc for a while though.

I even tried the bonus disc, and nothing, not detected. HOWEVER (this is where it gets a little interesting), I tested a pirated DVD...

...and that works. WTF?

The JP machine is currently only at FW2.30, and it was asking me to update to 2.36 but I ignored it cause I tried to update but it took forever and kept disconnecting from the main server. So I figured I'd wait for tomorrow's 2.40...

So can anyone tell me what the deal is?! Everything else works fine; plays demos and videos of the HDD, plays DVDs, but not BDs?!?

I'm hoping tomorrow's FW update will fix things, but if not...do I have to replace the lens? Tomorrow I'll be going back with a couple more BD games, movies, PS2 original games and movies and see what it can/cannot play.

Yeah I remember reading that...I probably didn't fully read that user's symptoms though. Will add that to the list of things to try. Thanks!

Ok, do update us all in here. But one thing though, during the two times i've been to the service center, they never asked me to call them back to check status. they themselves will call me back (usually on wed/thurs. i gave my ps3 on the previous sunday) if my ps3 is done repaired. i did asked them to email me but they never did. donno why, maybe the like to speak thru the phone more laugh.gif

Raiko, which shop you bought? As far as I know, Game shops never hold warranty for PS3. Only Sony Singapore/Hong Kong etc. (dats why they charge you for lens fixing). Shops only responsible for taking your PS3 to the service center and getting it back for you. if they are willing and you dont mind waiting for 3months or more la. I cannot tahan the wait thats why i went to the service center in singapore by myself.

i thought no one reading so lazy to update tongue.gif

anyways, i send to service center at 5/7, i told the guy i am not Singaporean so he asked me to call back to check status. however before i called i received a mail that the service is done. so on 12/7 i went back to the service center to pick it up.

according to them the technician changed the lens. everything in the harddisk are still there and one thing to note is that when i send them it is FW2.40 but when i took back it is FW2.36

anyway, thanks for the update. funny, i always request them to send me email but they never do. only to non-singaporeans/malaysians i think laugh.gif

about that FW downgrade, i dont know how they did it because you can never downgrade. only upgrade.
but nothing to worry, the important thing is, you have a fully working ps3 once more. plus, you can always do it by yourself. i.e upgrade to FW2.41

They said when ur PS3 is hanging,
nvr turn off the console and dun even take the disc out,
the best way is to long press the I/O button for 3 to 5 seconds,
wait for ur PS3 to reboot,
if u take out the disc while hanging,
ur BD Drive will be lock and ur PS3 cant read any disc after that.

I am confident Sony has a tool to downgrade the FW nod.gif

But, if its problem was the lens, why did they downgraded the firmware ...

actually i haven't have the ps3 hang on him during a game yet.

so is it better to eject the disc during hang and reboot?
or wait then reboot but leave the disc inside? rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

Okay how come according to the guide in this forum, it says if somehow the PS3 hang when playing BD game, just eject the disc before rebooting to preven the lens from hurting more ? Which is more accurate ?

i. did your game/movie froze?
ii. what game/movie was it?
iii. what did you do after it froze? (i.e turned it off from the flip switch at the back/eject the disc)

Nope... it just that when i got back from work last nite, boot up the ps3, and there's no BD icon in game list (i left GTA4 in it).. eject it and put back in, only the loding icon showing and no loads up disk. Try switching the games also no luck. Cold boot ps3, no luck. Tried DVD movies (ori) also cannot..
guess i need to send it back to the shop.. I bought it at maxdream summit.. hopes they provide warranty.

a lot of similar case.

personally I dont think there is anything wrong with your bd drive, in a theory, i think its 'locked'. If you send back to sony, they simply 'unlock' it back. Thats why a forummer here even had his ps3's firmware downgraded. thats a theory lah. why lock? now thats the question.

My lens just got burnt over the weekend. The last i played was a week ago then i tried playing last weekend and it just wont read the disc. I sent it to the shop for them to repair. They say it will cost me Rm300+. Why is it so that the PS3 lens is so easy to burn? I have had many consoles in my life and none of them have failed on me.

i would suggest to wait for fw 2.43 first. kalau that fixes the disc not reading, then thats good. if not, kena tukar la itu lens. scared later after fix the lens, n 2.42 fw issue reoccur. mati oo like that.

Force a shutdown
Press and hold the Power button on the front of the PS3 for about 10 seconds to force the system to shutdown (safely).
Use this method if your PS3 freezes/crashes. Do not flick the power switch on the back of the unit to shutdown because it could potentially corrupt your files.

Force disk eject
Press and hold down the Eject button on the front of the PS3 for about 10 seconds to force the system’s drive to eject.
Useful for example if you try to launch a PS2 game and it freezes. You should be able to force eject the disc and then force shutdown the system.

Reset video settings
With your PS3 turned off, press and hold the Power button on the front of the PS3 for about 10 seconds (the system will beep as normal as it starts up but after 7-10 seconds it will beep again). The video settings should now be reverted. Doing this will also reset any theme settings.

Actually it's better to send it to Singapore & repair. Reason is because once the official seal is broken any other problem you cannot claim warranty anymore. Like now my case whereby after changing the lens, cannot play BD but can play games. If it's due to any other problem then I will have to pay for it even it's still under warranty.

I just had my PS3 not able to detect any blueray disc. I did a quick search on google and read that if you press the eject button on the console for 10 sec it'll reset the lense. I did it and it work. I was just about to break something.

So you guys who have the same "unable to detect disc problem" should try this first. After 10 sec the blue light will blink.

my own crazy theory why Blue Ray lens might fail:

1. wear out.
the mechanism to move the head needs to be greased. . Heats wears out the grease. gears stuck

2. lost focus
lens lost focus after alot usage. just tune the lens vis screw. not sure

3. poor quality or defect ~rare.

4. switching btw cd/dvd/bd. each time a medium is changed, the controller(IC) need to decide the density of laser to read the disc. controller may die after alot of switching . so the controller cant decide which density and fai.

5. defect disc cd/dvd, scratches may forces the lens to read even harder therefore shorten the life span.

i think most of user that have failure lens watch DVD and burned CD at PS3.

One of the thing that lens broken is due to blackout or without proper on and off.

The other things is, maybe user put their PS3 near to magnetic object
such as:-

1.Fan
2.Woofer
3.CRT Monitor, or old TV that use magnetic to run
4.Magnet of coz
5.Iron
6.Computer Power Supply
7.Telephone
8.Heater
9.Wired area ( are that full of wire )
10. Dynamo and Adapter

Blackout... hmmm... my place got blackout once or twice. Thank God didn't get the 3D sweat.gif (and I hope tak akan kena)
I'm not sure bout this but some shops tend to change the lens of the PS3 to a cheap one, that's why some can sell it real cheap (got source from a supplier).

About burned DVDs/CDs, I don't recommend playing it using your PS3. Why? Because of the disc quality. And from my experience, Sony is notorious in laser drive problem sweat.gif

*edited*
2.43 is up, so, time for you guys to try it out and see if it unlocks your drive. Good luck!

blackout can easily make ur ps3 overload, coz when blackout, everything was not proper shut down and even can corrupt ur data.

Usually when blackout, user forget to unplug the plug from the socket first before the electricy available.

At the moment electricity available again, ur ps3 can get extra power and sometimes can ruin ur lens or worse.. ur main core kong.

Blackout is dangerous, please keep ur ps3 safe.

If ur area suddenly ly blackout, make sure turn of ur back power of the ps3, and unplug it from socket. When eletricity available again, then u plug again and play like normal.

Yeap its true, even burn CD/DVD are supported by ps3, but they required knowledge to make sure everything run smoothly, dont think just burn then u can play, there is specification on how to burn, disc types, disc quality, burn speed rate, and also disc thickness.

for examples: Normal people always use nero rom burner or something similar, and usually they just press next next next without realise that configuration are crucial

Blueray speed now is around 2x i think if not mistaken, so some people put 48 X or even 52 x when burn, which may stress the lens.

ok here new info on PS3 speed rate

Blu-ray Disc 2x (BD-ROM)
DVD 8x (DVD-ROM)
CD 24x (CD-ROM)

always follow the speed specification when burn

mine that may cause my drive problem:

- always leave my game disc in the drive.
- vertical position.
- side by side with sub woofer
- playing none-stop mgs4 direct 1 day+ till finished, then continue GTA4 sweat.gif

condition that i notice when got problem.. the disc is not spinning at all.. try put any disc and remember the position.. then eject it back, notice that it stays the same....

CONFIRM CAN PLAY COD4 & ALL MY BD

rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif

*
woah thx...i got the same problem as urs...ill give a shot now

Added on September 25, 2008, 12:51 amhmm nothing fixed....tried few set ups still not fixed....weird...it seems my ps3 really2 kena go for service.. cry.gif

Hi guys, refer to the link above. My PS3 is dead.. Not sure wat's the main cause, but definitely,i will throw it away if the repair cost is too high.

Im quite up sad with it. i bough my console on august last year. And i seldom played it due to working outstation and seldom at home... i think my console not on more than 20 times. The game i manage to finish is DMC 4.

To those who are saying im using those pirated DVD,u are wrong. I bough it original from the shop. and this is the 1st time i using PS3 for DVD,i just wanna try out the features. Will you buy a gaming console for a DVD?? i got my own DVD player at home, guys.so pls dun simply said it if dunno the situation...

The spacing for my PS3 is perfect,as i put it with a lot of free space, not near the wall.

So,guess is my bad luck, sadly, Sony did disapointed me. Hopefully i can get a new PS3 soon if i can't fix my current one.

from Djinn..

I think the cause of my disc detection failure is bcoz of switching on/off too often. Coz at that time i was fixing my speakers and av receivers..so..after fixing..i was testing my ps3...sound did not load..then off ps3..check cable..refix everything..and on ps3 again...these steps were done couple of time..then finally everything was working fine..was playing a bluray movie...suddenly it hang..i removed the disc..off the ps3 and on it again..from here onwards..it cannot detect the disc

I think you should have leave the BD inside...
Well, to everyone else, if your PS3 hang, just leave it, don't switch off the main power, use the press-the-power-button-for-10-seconds method.

How can this RM1500+ machine be so fragile ?? on/off also can spoil meh ? rclxub.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

This means the PS2 is much much more rigid and can handle stress better. With all the ahem discs it plays.....it can last almost 4yrs, before a need to service the lens. thumbup.gif

Anyway, I've only used my PS3 for about 2 months now, its a 1yr old unit. And I hope that I'm not stepping into the same boat soon.

May I know, these problem is reported in which machines ? the 40Gb or the other versions ?

Maybe because Blu-Ray are more sensitive than other devices. Blu-Ray is still in early phase, sh!t happens. My PS3 still fine so far.. I nvr put other media except my game inside of it. Come on guys, stop playing BD games, let's us all play Megaman 9! HAHAHAHA!

I heard the latest 80Gb version has 2 laser lens

Lens A : BD Lens (BD Games & Movies)
Lens B : DVD/CD Lens (DVD Movies & CD Audio)

I guess this would be a better unit, at least when BD lens spoil, DVD/CD still can work.

Those with problem reading BD can try DVD / CD disc and see whether its still working?? I m just curious.

not to mock you or what, but seriosly, where did you heard this news? If it was from some sungai wang retailer then forget it. PS3 only has one lens. Thats it.

user posted image

Observe the mechanism on the thing. Either Sony does an overhaul to the design (which will cost more) than having a dual lens is financially impossible.

Yaa laa..I've got two PS3...

1) First issue 60GB PS3 HK model...my wife watched all season of friends and also numerous DVD...all upscaled...and more than a year ago...no issue till today...oh and all sparrow dvds...and some I downloaded the iso and burned to dvd-r and dvd-rw

2) 80GB US Version Metal Gear Bundle....also the same thing...been having it for more than 6 mths...all types of sparrow and dvd--r and dvd-rw....also without hesitation..

no lense kaput case yet...not talking big but..I seriously do not thing that's the case....the only case I think is ear and tear and also nasib as it's the most sensitive part of the console...so just

Oh and the disc that you play is only good if the condition is good...if you put in ori DVD but super scratchy and beded...into the rive and force the drive to play the damn disc...this will also break it...so think before insertng any disc...and make sure it's a good condition disc...

Please remember guys....over in the US..the sparrow dvd issue us not as rampant as us here in MY....so they only play ori DVD over there but there are still cases of lense goes kaput....they never mention sparrow dvd as the cause pun...

p/s: Anyone knoe what is the model number for metal gear bundle US 80 GB PS3?

My PS3 is not detecting any disc also, so i bring it back to the shop and ask them to claim warranty.
I was playing Assasin's Creed while it hangs.. LOL.. (Like some users here also have this problem.. damn that cd..)

They told me that they will be sending it to Singapore and I only have to pay for shipping and he say is will cost me around RM300 +/- rclxub.gif
I bought it during August this year and now this problem..

Is there anything that I can do to repair this console cheaper? Might wanna sell it off after warranty because takut rosak lagi and pay another 300 bucks again.. rclxub.gif

Please tell me what I can do.. I'm confused now..

Thanks in advance! smile.gif

CECHH onwards all comes with dual laser already which includes the Sony Malaysia official model CECHK06.

If scared of lens kaput, here's what I did, all my movie, anime and mp3 collection is in my PC which is over 2 terabyte, so I install a media streaming software. The PS3 auto detect the streaming server and I can browse my entire collection, I can play any movie I want over WIFI or over LAN.

I use TVersity. Freeware and easy to setup. If your PC and WIFI router supports UPnP and u switch it on. Your PS3 will auto detect the media server.

Download and read more from HERE

Added on October 7, 2008, 3:23 pmOh ya, another point is that the connectors and other boards for the single laser and dual laser is totally different. So u guys no need to worry about shops swapping the dual laser with the single laser module.

A not so good news is that users with older model (single laser) also cannot upgrade to the newer dual laser module. wink.gif

I use Windows Media Player 11 (WM11) which is bundled with XP for streaming stuffs from my pc to my ps3 downstairs using wifi. Works very well I have to say, nice to watch pictures, listen to mp3s and watch movies.

most of my downloaded shows are in AVI (divx/xvid) with subs, so I don't really have a problem. I'm tempted to view some HD content, but I've got bluray for that.

*
At last problem solved. Just put your PS3 in vertical position. BD can read already. Funny though....

It's confirm that your PS3 is dead. This kind of failure happened to a few of forumers here with the same model i.e 60GB, it's not a common failure but rare and you are one of the unlucky ones. So far as I know no shop can repair and you can't send to SONY Malaysia as it's not an official model launched here.

So sorry...may it RIP....

Same thing happened to mine. Basically, if you have your warranty, send it back to claim. If it's in Sg, it will take quite a bit of effort and time. Your dealer may be able to send it for you but if not, you may have to drive there yourself. Your hard disk should still be useable so if you can salvage that and all your files.

I'm on the way to pick up a 2nd hand PS3 in a moment actually!

One day, I'll drive up to Sg to get mine sorted. If you haven't fixed your problem, I'm happy to help you bring yours up too. I don't know when I'll be going up yet though!

try these methods..

QUOTE
Hey, today a woke up to a red flashing light on my ps3. I wondered wut it meant, searched it on google and found some pretty bad news. DEAD. after about 1/2 an hour of trying to turn it on i search a fix on google, but came up empty handed.

i decided that i would take the matter into my own hands. i took the hard drive out and turned it on, and to my amazement it work i dont know how, but it worked. i then wanted to play resistance fall of man. i booted up the game and boom it turned off beeped 3 times and the light flashed red onece again.

i took out the hard disk and booted it up again turned it off and put the hard disk back in. ive been playing ever since and it seems to be working fine. just thought that id give u guys a heads up, to help anyone else out there with the same problem.

And just in case we didn't get the news right the first time, we got another email from MXACE a while later:

hey yesterday i woke up to bad news, i turned on my ps3 by the swich in the back and about 2 seconds later it beeped three times and the red light started flashing. after trying to turn it on for about 1/2 an hour i realized that it wasnt going to turn on...

i did some searching on the web and found nothing but 360 had the same problem. heres the interesting thing i found a ''fix'', all i did was take out the hard disk, and turn it on to get my game out. then i put the HD back in and turned it on. it worked. i booted up a game and the same damn red flashing light came back on.

i repeated the steps and checked to see it the game would work now, and it did! im currently useing my ps3 to write this. i wanted to let you guys over at QJ.net because i couldnt find a fix anywere and maybe if you post this ill end up helping someone else.

loumou, do you take care of your ps3? i mean do you clean your ps3 or you let it collect dust until you get yellow light? i read somewhere about a guy whose ps3 died and he send it back to sony. when those guys at sony opened his ps3, they found it was full of dust and refused to repair it for free.

Gotta use that brush head to get all the dirt off the fan. laugh.gif

Normally overheating isn't a big problem in PS3s. As long as your ps3 is in a well ventilated place and rested after long hours of gaming it would be fine.

But from experience, electronic stuff can just breakdown at any time. One minute it's happy and playing. Next it's dead. Just like my PS2. What a pain.

the symptoms you described are what guys on the net call, the yellow light of death. generally it means there's a hardware failure in your PS3. the only way to fix this is to send it back to Sony.

Huh? PS3 got this similar problem like Xbox360's 3ROD? What the F?? mad.gif

Is this the normal pattern for current next-gen consoles? ie overheating, disc read error, etc?

My old PS2 can last for 3 years plus without problem cool2.gif

Overheating is a very common thing in ALL electronics now. The processor is so powerful it gets hot too fast. But PS3 overheating problems is minimal. If you actually maintain the PS3 properly nothing should happen.

My PS2 lasted 7 years. Just recently it decided to do something stupid.

80Gb ftw man. Everything that is lacking from the 60GB doesn't really matter.

Extra USB and Card reader can be replaced with an external one. And I doubt anyone actually plays PS2 games in PS3.

Actually..ive already encountered such disaster long ago..my HK 60GB had first run into media reading failure.ive already replaced the lens, 2 of em!!still yet to be no avail.but suddenly mine fall again with the YLOD problem..and ive managed to revived it..until now,my first ps3 can be booted up but cannot play any media disc..such a waste..

to conclude the above matter happened bcoz of PS3 overheating, it might be the case.ive played my PS3 in enclosed room where no such good air ventilation exist..where i can felt the room temperature is menacing high.it is better to place ur ps3 in a well ventilated room where the present of window to provide fresh air from outside..

to TS,if u r interested i might try to use my method to help u revive ur ps3..anyway,its all about luck.

Hi, just checked with SONY Asia (HK).

Only HK SONY service center will accept your PS3. You'll have to send the set to a friend in HK for repair because SONY requires someone to receive and verify the repair. SONY actually discourages import sets because of such conflicts, so, it's advisable to buy local sets.

I've also checked with an experienced shop in Sgp. They have encountered many such cases (similar to yours) and there is still no method to fix it yet. But, the technician advised you to keep the set for the time being because there might be a way to repair it in the future.

I apologize for bringing up this thread. My PS3 suffered the same fate as TS, today. Was downloading Dead Space demo this morning, and suddenly the system shuts down by itself. I turn it back on and the green light appeared briefly, followed by a very brief yellow light, and lastly a blinking red light. Took the hard disk out, turned it on again and still the same results. I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones because I'm aware that this is a rare problem. My warranty expired already.

My PS3 is a 60GB SG unit. Purchased on 16 August 2007. RIP today (29 November 2008).

Thanks, sifu Tot. Mungkin tahun depan baru leh beli PS3 baru kot.

@BlueLotus, Yes I believe there's is no cure too at the moment, but as bro Edvpc said: One day, hopefully there will be a cure! Muahaha biggrin.gif

@nwk, I was thinking of sending too Sony SG too, but I'm not sure how much they will charge me as I'm out of warranty as this is a very old PS3. I'll have to make a few enquiries if I'm really interested for them to fix it for me. But, if it's too expensive (e.g RM600 above), then I'd better save up for a few months more to get a brand new MY unit.

The failure rate is very low. Like, less then 3%. Your very unlucky to get it. Unlike RROD which was close to 30%. Now RROD isn't so bad anymore from all the addons though.

@Rezuan78,

Ya, bro. Nampak gayanya mcm tu. cry.gif Takpe, satu hari nanti aku akan kembali di PSN. Tp tak tau bila. sweat.gif

@MYKidd and jsc_tidus,

I did some googling and found that no one is sure what's the exact cause of this red blinking light hardware failure for the 60GB PS3. Some said it's due to overheating, some said it's due to faulty Hard Drive, and also it could possibly be due to a faulty power supply. It's mysterious don't you think?

i think it has something to do with the operating system of the console.. + the old air ventilation of 60GB version makes perfect combo..
