Enhanced security features for new Myvi carsSubmitted by masami on Monday, November 9th, 2009
The airbag is the most expensive single part in the cabin, costing about RM2,500 or RM5,000 for each car as these airbags are fitted for the driver and front passenger.
FOLLOWING a number of reported Myvi airbag thefts in recent months, which led to the discovery of a security weakness, all Myvi models manufactured from January next year will come pre-installed with an improved alarm system to address the issue.
Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) managing director, Datuk Syed Abdull Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar, told Malay Mail that Perodua discovered a security weakness that allowed thieves with working knowledge of the car to easily remove both fitted airbags without triggering the alarm.
"We discovered the problem during monthly technical meetings, where a recurring pattern of airbag thefts were noted from a number of customer complaints reported back from service centres.
"From the reported thefts in the media as well, our research and development division noticed the security problem and we knew we needed a field-fix," he said.
A few months of research enabled the technical committee to device a counter-measure.
"We have fixed it for the models coming out now, but we are in the midst of enabling and testing the after-market solution for cars that are already on the road," he said.
Cars manufactured in April already have a quick-fix, where all Myvi cars produced from then had a "software upgrade" that nullified the problem.
Cars sold before April, however, could receive a free upgrade at service centres starting from December.
This upgrade would be similar to the alarm system maintenance and takes 20 to 30 minutes to install.
It is learnt that the thefts started at the end of last year and Perodua has recorded about five airbag theft cases — which were reported to its customer relations department so far.
A spokesperson said Perodua will assist police in their investigations.
