Hi all LYN members...

I will be organizing a rescue operation of the dogs in Pulau Ketam, due to the urgency, I had suggested to be held this weekend, or if not possible, next weekend... I had proposed this to se7en as a LYN project, and i yet to get response from him, but anyhow, i will carry this on as a sole, pure voluntarily basis event.

Due to the serious nature of the case at the moment, i will rush back to Klang from KK today and i will be forming a group of volunteers of my own to start a rescue mission.

My main intention here is to start with Pulau Ketam itself first, as i believe, the root of the problem started from the island itself, we will try to capture as many dogs as possible over there so that to prevent any next round of dogs sending to the abandoned island again.

I'm on the midst of contacting TV Smith and Sabrina Yeap (http://www.mycen.com.my/rescue/index.html) on how we can assist and help them on their mission. Be assured that I will do my best to assist them.

As for LYN members who wish to volunteer themselves for this cause, PLEASE be minded that this is strictly on volunteer basis, and this event is gonna be extremely physical endurance and tiring stuff, so im not gonna responsible for your safety, injuries, etc that might would happen during the course of this event.

I would not accept any donations in form of cash, please donate directly to mycen.com.my and any contributions in form of equipments (dog cages, dog foods, drinks for volunteers, ropes, and others stuff that deem fit) would be very much welcomed!

Peeps, this is solely on voluntarily basis, no pays, no salary.... please bring your own water, money for foods....

I would appeal to all members on humanitarian grounds to help out this good cause!!

SOLELY SERIOUS STUFF HERE, NO SPAMMING, NO TROLLING

Good luck. But I have one question, what gonna happen to the dogs once you rescue them? Just curious to know your long terms plans are.
*
this is not a problem, most important is we could gather back as many dogs back as possible... and then i will arrange to where to send to...

be assured that these all dogs saved WOULD NOT BE PUT TO SLEEP.....

hi all....

i had got TV smith reply midnight yesterday where i had dozz off due to my tiredness...

apparently, TV smith advise to survey the island 1st instead of just go in there and make the mission.

here is the content of his email:

Hi Adrian,

For the remaining dogs on the island, I advise you take a survey first
and coordinate with us. You can catch them but they need to be
properly transported and sent to vets before going to the shelter.
Need to work with the village head on this. They have agree to put the
deportation on hold until a solution is found. Don't know how much is
true. Also might be easier to get the guy who caught the earlier batch
to help out. Maybe you guys can then go again to monitor the manner it
is done and see if it is harmful to the dogs.

Go visit, identify the areas, inquire with the villagers respectfully.
Then organise a proper capture. You can't just walk in one Sunday and
hope to do this. Thanks for the effort and kind thoughts though.

Cheers,

Terrence V Smith
Malaysia Central
www.mycen.com.my

so, im thinking and taking his advise.... n here i postpone our mission to next weekend, and for this weekend, tomoro, i plan for a survey on pulau ketam, talk to the villager, the village headman n discuss what we could do....

so, anybody wanna join this weekend trip.... please do inform me.... but this not gonna a holiday trip.... after the island visit, we will sit down n discuss what we could do, and plan for next weekend mission.

this might time some of your time, but all for the name of volunteering as well as saving lives of the living beings....

Sorry for the silly question but for verification , this is to rescue the stray dogs that are on Pulau Ketam or the ones adbandoned?

we will start from pulau ketam itself 1st

yea it would be better to know the place and people there first before we make any move.

Can you give any detail about tomorrow trip? like what time and where to meet up? And what are the purposes and goals of our trip?
*
i willl take some time to study how many stray will be still there in pulau ketam itself... try grab as many as we can from there, and send to the animal shelter...

as i mention earlier, prevention is better than cure.... nobody will put money on the guarantee that after this tragic incident, the pulau ketam folks would not send the dogs to there again....

i still awaiting for tv smith reply whether can we tumpang sabrina to visit pulau tengah.... help out if i could...

but anyway, i will definately start from pulau ketam, due to the current situation and time issue.

QUOTE(chibi_tenko @ May 10 2009, 07:31 AM)
I'll be bringing along two bags of dog food next week.

If SPCA is the receiving end of any rescued dogs from Pulau Ketam, it's almost sending them to a certain death. It pains me to know that after going through the effort to save them, we're sending them to another dead end way (pun intended). I understand that Sabrina's farm can't take in so many dogs but if the Pulau Ketam dogs will be send to PAWS or SPCA, I will donate the kibbles to Sabrina instead. She needs it more for the Death Island dogs than those at Pulau Ketam now.
*
this cant be sure as we do not know the amount of strays around pulau ketam now... thats y the survey is important.... we will not know how many dogs are still there in pulau ketam ....tv smith n sabrina is concentrating at pulau tengah and if they require our help, hen we see what we can do... probably after pulau ketam, we may rent a boat and go to pulau tengah as well....

this all i cant confirm until when i survey pulau ketam first. i dont wanna rush into anything b4 i have full survey, full info and so on....

that is y i kept mentioning tht the survey is an important element....

btw, my lastest update we have 5 volunteers include me for this trip.... so should be adequate for today mission...

LYN'ers, please pray for us and hope this mission will be a successful ones.

Hi all....

I wish to update u guys, and before that... i would like to emphasize here again that this thread is solely for our pulau ketam mission, so i have no aganda with tv smith nor sabrina team, as i do not wish to disturb their concentration on saving the remaining dogs at pulau tengah....

Its not that my wish not to involve, but i think its better for us to do our own deeds and lets all pray for the mission of tv smith n sabrina, ok?

Ok, for yesterday expedition, im very grateful to A-D-Photographer, whom is volunteering in taking the whole journey's story n mission, dadarouch, a friend of mine, whom never fails me when it comes to volunteer jobs... n kaven n her friends (both r non-LYN) whom interested to join although they google and find out our thread here.

We arrive at pulau ketam at about 1.30pm, and straight my first task is to look for the village headman, Mr. Cha.

Got him and we spoke for around 20 mins, from the introduction, the issues of the stray dogs there, what kind of assistant that they could provide to us, and other matters.

Apparently, when this issue being highlighted on the press, media were pointing the fingers towards them... this is understood, as not many willing to get to know and understand the life of this village in depth and great length b4 the summary and conclusion comes up.

I get to know more information from the village headman, and what from i could observe and summarize here is that, the villagers had no choice but to use the last resort as even the authorities had not taken any action, prevention and so on.... this has been repeated several times, till when.... were left with no other options or alternative, only when the last resort being drawn up.

From here, i strongly against any finger pointing whom are to blame and so on... as if i or anyone else being put into that shoes, would do so. Why? because nobody wanna cares or give a damn about it, when only tragic happens, only all the things being blown up only all the hoo-hahs happens.

So, after all the introduction and get to understand all the issues and problems, then i put in my agenda and motive of being there... as Mr. Cha was abit skeptical of my intention at first, after all my explainations at length and so on, he finally accept my good intention there.

So, i ask the permission to have a survey on every corner of the island, he gracefully please do so, do help us on this disturbing issue, and do get feedback from the villagers as well. According to him, the villagers would be very welcome our good intention there.

So, 5 of us started our survey at great length, and we manage to spoke one or two of the villagers, and true to what Mr. Cha said, the villagers r kind of glad that we come to get the stray dogs out from the island, and as my bad memory doesn't down me, i spoke to an old lady (or Ah Chim as we call in our local dialect), praising us for getting the strays out, as it being nuisance and a long-standing problem for them.

So, we find our way to the end of western side of the island, in where we we condemn as Ground Zero, which later on i found out is the rubbish dump site, which is the favourite spot for the strays to stay.

Here, we could find anything that u could think of at a rubbish dump site, and i almost puked smelling the nice fragrance of the place, and at the same site here too, we could heard the strays barking far into the swamp jungles, in which we concluded is their hot-spot.

After another few minutes walking around, and a short rest at a junction of a path, we carry on to another side of pulau ketam.

Frankly by this hour, i started to felt the effect of haven't taking my breakfast or lunch as well, in which i totally forgotten about it at all b4 coming in to the island sad.gif

But i insist to move on and discover the eastern side on the island, in which we found out that majority here are residential area for the villagers here, as well as a small river flowing cutting the 2 lands, and fishermen and boats could be seen here.... and this is where i excitedly found out this, i couldn't help myself to post this:

user posted image

Please note this ain't photoshop edited or camera trick ok?
ot long after, my body couldn't take it anymore, and the group seen that i had weaken down, and we decided that would be our end of the survey...

I had assume to my knowledge that we had covered 3/4 of the island (which indeed is true after joyce had sent me this map below)

user posted image

After a short rest having drinks, and some casual chit chat among 5 of us, we proceed to meet Mr. Cha to discuss what he could help us out and he did offer us to transport any strays that we could manage to get through a boat which ships daily essentials and stuffs from mainland to the island, and he had gave the owner of the boat to discuss the price who send the strays to the main island. Indeed, a very useful help to us as we been scratching our heads out on the cost to hire a whole boat to transport them, which in turn, would be very costly to us as volunteers.

Mr Cha requested that whether i could furnish him with a simple letter in chinese which stated that we r an independent group of volunteers wishing to assist to rescue strays on the island, and transport them to the main island. In the letter we should state that we need full corporation from the islander as well as village headman to assist us in our mission.

Here, i need anyone who could write a simple letter in chinese to them... although im chinese-ed, but im not good in writing a letter in chinese, so i could send u a english or malay written and help me to translate it. Please...................

After the short discussion with Mr Cha, we proceed to take our trip back, and last night i really cant discuss much with those volunteers for ideas, as im really run out of steam soon when i reach home, i couldn't sleep last night, as i kept thinking, what i need to do, planning and so on for next week mission... my head kept spinning.....

That's the end of my write-up, and i wish to again forward my gratefulness to A-D-Photographer aka Joyce, dadarouch aka Louis, Kaven n her friend, for yesterday trip.

we will have another brain storming session again tonight with all the volunteers.

Thanks.

Adrian

Contact me when you are there, I have enough of manpower and equipments ready with me here. Don't think I have time to MSN at this point of time, because we are leaving tomorrow early morning to go there, but if you need any help you can always drop me a message.

I will suggest you to not just study about the place but as well get some people who are great with animals with you, they will know how to take care of the dogs, secondly, bring more dog's food too. How many cages have you get? Do you have contact with any vet for the dogs? In case you manage to catch some, send them to the vet for check up first.

Anyway, you are only going on Saturday which on the day I have other event, I might or might not be there on Saturday. Due to my pack schedule I have no choice but only to do it on weekdays, well on leave mah, who cares? A life is more important than the money.

good morning!

before i got post up yesterday meeting outcome, below are the findings of one of the volunteers whom stay back at pulau ketam overnight:

1) 17 different strays spotted since yesterday morning. possible hot site has been marked. identified 2 hot spot of the strays favorite ground. Ran off on the sight of human presence.

2)Night catch/mission are impossible, due to poor lightning and the risk of falling off from the platform are there.Strays senses human presence will ran off even from distances, a couple of fierce strays howled. Proof that there are in groups, possibly huge numbers, eg. at least 10-20. Stopped exploring as midnight approached.

3) Tidewaves didnt reach the inner part of the island, info from the locals stated it would be at random, whether high, medium or low tides. Strays dont always come out on the platform, but they do howl alot during the nights.

4) Went under the slits at around noon time. Very smelly and dirty as well. Found one dead puppy, lying on the muds, cant do much but to just leave it there as too deep into the below the slits.

Pictures will be updated as soon as possible. Many thanks to Joyce for his contribution here
