Should I take lessons or learn the guitar by myself? I took lessons from the month of November in form 2 till the end of form 4(2006). I'm from the Subang Jaya area, in your opinion which music school in the area has the best guitar teachers? Anybody wanna jam? I have a friend who drums and another who plays the guitar/ bass, also from the Subang Jaya area.

It's always nice when u mix both. I took lessons since 2004 until 2006. Now i'm learning everything by myself. So it's like, learning the basics and then do the rest yourself. P.S.: your jam offer is tempting. Mmmm~

if you have zero knowledge on guitar, best you take basic lessons for a couple of months then you can move on on your own... you'll learn a lot on your own especially from friends.. be sure to have some pro friends to give you tips and correct your mistakes

Honestly, I'd say get guitar lessons. You get to immediately correct any mistakes, and you won't develop bad habits. I've wasted a lot of time figuring theory and stuff. There's nothing cool about being able to shred something up and say, "I'm self taught" if you can't get the basics right. Even if you're not gonna get guitar lessons, mix around with good guitarists who know their stuff, not posers.

self teaching guitar is do-able, go for it....
i thought myself music theory, piano, guitar, reading fake books....
but in your case, play your favourite music, learn to follow time and beat, chords and scales....tabs are available everywhere to practice....

xMika - such as? for instance if your a drummer, and u see ppl holding the traditional grip and u go, wow! cool! i wanna do that too! and u keep practicing the trad grip just like u saw, but the thing about the traditional grip is about how ur finger fulcrum react in giving the stick the rebound it needed. and if u just mimic the looks of it without getting fully understand how the stick supposed to move, ur sound wud be totally off the hook, not to mention getting urself injured in the process.
seriously anything u practice in the wrong way can be dangerous, if u ady biasa using the wrong technique in ur playing, it wud be hard for u to change it. so thats y we need instructor to teach us and guide us throughout our playing, so that u can ask him and he can observe u on whether ur doing it right or wrong.

its good to get lessons..im self taught..and i only understand tabs. besides, u'll save time on trial and error. for example, u'll learn the proper way to hold chords. instead of figuring out later that by holding it a certain way,it will be alot easier to change between chords. but then again, nowadays alot of FREE resources and tutorials online. they are very helpful, even for intermediate players..

I bought " Guitar For Dummies 2nd edition " to teach myself guitar. Very good book. Detailed explaination, comes with a cd that includes all the tracks you need to play in the book. Works as backing track too. A very complete guide for beginners & " dummies " like me >.< I dont know anything about guitar when I started off. This book never dissapoint me. Can be found at books store like MPH. Priced @ RM 79.90. After you become an advanced player, can sell the book for a lower price & buy some other books like teach you cool licks ^^

The most important thing about learning is to understand your limitations. Know what you don't know. As soon as this makes sense, you'll open a whole lot of doors. Lessons aren't a must, but it helps.
