s-video doesn't seem to have improved the picture any, it's as blotchy as ever - or is the PQ on ESPN/Star sports basically just crap?

QUOTE(DigitalTech @ Jun 10 2009, 09:43 AM)
It will be highly unlikely astro goes digital within 3-5 years.

As has been mentioned many many many times in this thread, ASTRO TRANSMISSION IS DIGITAL.

it's just heavily compressed, is all.

And last I checked, component video connection is analog.

meanwhile US goes digital nationwide today Gizmodo posted this

When a solar storm hits all of these will be irrelevant even analog. Probably analog will be a bit better off.

especially if using satellite

the reason for digital transmission is NOT quality, it's bandwidth - in the bandwidth required to transmit one analog channel, you can compress video and go up to 6 digital channels. Unfortunately transmission bandwidth is a limited resource - and you cannot get more; so you have to go digital to get more TV channels

furthermore, from a sports fan point of view, singaporeans are paying nearly 5 times for a live football event and hong kong, not to be mistaken 20 times... can be grateful we do have the service here, and on worldwide basis, still cheaper biggrin.gif

Happy now?

now go back and read the post below

QUOTE(Traveler @ Jul 2 2009, 10:41 AM)
Astro's CFO said yesterday that they plan to roll out HD service in Sept 2009, with main drivers to be sports and movies. He said they already have the decoder box but haven't decided on the pricing model yet. Likely they may give some kind of offer or priority for long-time/high-value Astro customers. Apparently the cost of the HD decoder box is actually lower than that of the SD decoder box.

QUOTE(MyDevil @ Jul 3 2009, 10:12 AM)
Good news. I hope I am in that customer bracket. I have 4 decoders under my name  biggrin.gif
*
I know they are a monopoly and all that, but is there any way we can make them change to follow Starhub model? you have ONE account, each additional decoder is a $10 per month rental (HD PVR is what.. $15 a month). Can we start a dialogue, see our MP or whatever...

so your 4 decoders would cost you the price of one account with all channels loaded .. say $150 + (rental of decoder x 4)

even it's using component out the quality will be still the same, as we still get the analogue signal.
*
while the component out is analog, you are getting a digital signal from Astro, have been since the day you subscribed, in case you haven't noticed.

Can someone - a moderator perhaps, change the topic title to "When is ASTRO going HD?"

I recall reading this (or something like it) earlier on in this very thread...

QUOTE(tracktion3 @ Oct 25 2009, 10:05 AM)
Extracted from the article..... interesting...

"Early in 2010 we plan to offer an HD DVR as a premium product. All our next generation boxes, whether DVRs or zappers, will be IP-enabled, capable of hybrid DTH and IPTV operation and interconnection via a home network."

just watch when this thread gets to the next page, someone will pop up and say "not until 2099"

we're the only societies in danger of turning into raving sex maniacs if we can view unregulated satellite TV

in some ways Singapore is odd...there are somewhat looser regulations in undefinable areas (example) but Sex In The City on HBO finished its run on Astro before it was shown in Singapore at all (by which time everyone had downloaded episodes, probably...)

is it possible and feasible for astro to go HD? like for audience who might not have budget to buy TV that support it? maybe they consider that
*
if the govt thought like that, we'd still be watching black and white TVs, riding bicycle everywhere and calculating using abacus
