In order for Astro to offer Digital HD channels, they need to change all the analogue decoder out there.

Astro already posting losses in their yearly accounts, due to bad investment decision in Indonesia.

Therefore, it is unlikely Astro will make the digital conversion move in the near future.

There's no harm to them whether they change to digital or not, they monopolise the market. No competition, means no innovation required.

We need to give Astro some competition to beef up their service.

Last time I remember, when Astro launched, they promise that all channels are commercial free. Now, it seems like Astro has more commercial than national channels.

No competition = no innovation = blood sucking from consumer

So, for those who expect Astro to go digital.....you can slowly wait until maybe your grand children's generation.

To be more realistic, better invest in a good build s-video cable to improve your picture quality on your LCD/Plasma TV.

That's the only way to improve astro picture quality.
If anyone has better solution, please share.

I have to disagree. The difference using good s-video cable (in my case Monster s-video) is pretty obvious. Even my wife who doesn't know jack about AV also notice it.

I have to agree with arremie. I've sold hundreds of units of Monster S-Video cable.

You can read my buyer's testimonial on my thread. Those testimonials are 100% honest feedback from my buyers.

Furthermore, you are not paying full local retail price for Monster cables.

arremie is one of my satisfied customers.

If you know other methods to improve your astro picture quality, besides using good s-video cable, please share with us.

This is the testing result made by cactusdd after using Monster THX S-Video cable:

QUOTE(cactusdd @ May 25 2009, 05:33 PM)
Thanks, DigitalTech
Got my Monster S-video and HDMI cables on Saturday.

After Testing and Compare with others cables, here is my results...

i'm using a LG 42" plasma TV with astro Max,
And Testing with 3 different Brands of S-video Cable and a normal composite cable.

1) China made S-video-1.5meter (RM48)
2) QED S-video-1meter only (RM180)
3) Monsters S-video(from DigitalTech) 8 feet

I was told by DigitalTech, Because of plasma can handle standard format video source quite well, So the impact (improvement) of this cable is lesser on a plasma than a LCD TV. And This is also the main Reason Why i shift from LCD to plasma, because most of my source is in SD and not in HD.

method of Testing, -  i record a 5 min video clip with astro Max, and keep playing the same Clip again and again so that i can easily spot the different.

PQ- Result of Picture Quality

1) Monster - 5 Star
2) China Brand - 4 Star
3) QED - 3 Star
4) Composite - 2 Star

For my wife, she can't  tell any different between those cables.
(p/s) my wife is wearing a pair of spectacle with very very very thick glasses on it!...

So, on my LG Plasma, Astro PQ only improve a little.
Colours

1) Monster - 5 Star
2) QED - 4 Star
3) China Brand - 3 Star
4) Composite - 2 Star

I give my credit to Monster, the improvements is great. i don't have to Test much,
the results is very clear.
LG plasma panel is a bit yellowish if i'm not wrong, exspecially
The skin colour improve a lot, its now more natural.

one more thing, my tv is wall mounted, with 8 feet of length, i can rearrange all my gadgets easily.

Overall, quite happy with the this S-video cable.

for the HDMI, i don't have any device to test yet.
(still looking for a good set of home theater system)   Any Suggestions?

any other way that we can use component cable watching astro...?might see the difference rite if can la..

It is true that component connection is better than s-video.

Unfortunately, our beloved astro decoder does not have component connection. sad.gif

Therefore, the best connection for astro for now is S-Video.

It will be highly unlikely astro goes digital within 3-5 years.

They don't have a reason to spend money to upgrade, as they monopolise the market.

I am dissapointed and not surprise at the same time.

Heard that the new astro decoder comes with component connection.

Anyone is using the new decoder? Is the picture quality better or near HD?

Please share.

Sorry for my One Liner

I explaiined this in the previous page

The New Astro Decoder comes with Component connection and supposedly has DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) and/or Digital Upscale (upscale from Astro source *Sheesh*)

If you are a current Astro subscribe, they DO NOT have an upgrade option

You have to unsubscribe your current Astro subscription after they have disconnected your service and reapply again to get the new Decoder

THERE IS NO OTHER WAY

I'VE ASKED

*Sigh*
*
I got a friend tested the new astro decoder with component connection.

The picture quality still sucks. I guess the source is still analogue, even with component connection.

So, I don't think a reason to change the decoder. That's why you don't hear hoo haa from astro on the new decoder.

lets just hope that they will upgrade the picture quality...

In order to improve the picture quality, Astro need to replace the current decoders.

To replace the current decoders means, either Astro absorb all the cost or charge it to customer.

They argue that there are majority of people still using CRT TVs. So if they replace the decoder, the old tv will not be compatible.

So, I think better not hope for HD from Astro for at least 3-5 years time.

Malaysia BOLEH!

To be more realistic now, upgrade your cable to improve your PQ in Astro.

What we can do now to improve the Astro PQ is to plug in a good build cable, eg Monster cables.

It does improve the PQ by 10-20%. Many of my customers acknowledged that improvement.

"Astro going HD" is considered fictional at this point of time.

how do you quantify the 10-20 PQ improvement?

what kind of super duper alien alloy monster cable are made of that make it better than other cable?

You don't have to agree with me.
