The only guy that i know off that can really do a hardware unlock is in Vietnam by a guy named TA Mobile.

They strip off the phone and the baseband chip and rewrite the code to unlock it. Then it will be like an "Officially Unlock" phone.

Purplesn0w is not the same as Purplera1n.

That problem have been solve with purplesn0w RC2 by GeoHot. The quote by harmeet is referring to to RC1 of purplesn0w in unlocking the 3Gs baseband, and not the 3Gs jailbreaking tool called purplera1n (I know people will get confuse with all the colorful rain and snow)

Purplesn0w = unlock for 3GS
Purplera1n = Jailbreak for 3GS
Redsn0w = Jailbreak for all iPhone model
Ultrasn0w = unlock for 3G and 3Gs

It seems like lots of 'new' people here don't read the first page. There's lots and lots of info that answers the questions being ask repeatedly.

I've also seen other forumers trying to help others (good thing) but sometime their facts are a bit "misleading". This will create confusion among "new" users where they normally come here for a hit and run type of questions.

For iPhone 2G, there's no need for an unlock as there is no baseband update. Unlock only necessary if there's a baseband update which Apple already "abandoned" for iPhone 2G. You only need to jailbreak by using PwnageTool (for mac) at this moment or use Redsn0w (for mac and win) when Dev Team release it. The reason why iPhone 2G will always need to be jailbreak? Because iPhone 2G need to be 'Hacktivated". If not, you will not get pass the "emergency call only" page but still can see the network.

Those ECID and SHSH are only for iPhone 3Gs. If yours is iPhone 3G then do not fret. This is because iPhone 3Gs have an encryption chip built in that prevent any downgrade of firmware.

p/s - There's a way to downgrade from 3.1 back to 3.0.X but I already forgot where.

That's not possible as iPhone 2G will always need to be jailbroken. Why? Because it need to be "hacktivated". The unlocking part, if you already unlock the iPhone 2G baseband, it will still be unlock even if you upgrade the firmware as Apple did not update the baseband anymore.

Won't work if you did not backup the ECID in the first place.

unlock and jailbreak are 2 different thing. Why lots of lock phones owner waiting for jailbreak? because they need to jailbreak first to unlock it.

To jailbreak, it does not matter if your's are factory unlock or lock phones. If your phone comes preloaded with fw3.1 or OTB (Out of The Box), then you are out of luck in jailbreaking (only applies for 3Gs phones).

Why?
Becoz of the ECID and SHSH thing. To be able to jailbreak fw3.1, you must have the 3.0 @ 3.0.1 ECID and SHSH. If you grab the ECID and SHSH for 3.1, then you can only jailbreak fw3.1.x or 3.2 in the future.

No need for manual mod for afc2, just install afc2add in cydia. It will enable back the use of ifunbox @ iphonebrowser.

I think what olitabin mean by "stolen" is missing. He's asking how to backup his apps if he were to upgrade his phone.

If you purchase your apps, do not fret. Just sync back thru itunes when you finish upgrading. If the apps are from Cydia, either use appbackup or re-install back everything one by one.

Try holding the home button and plug in your cable to your pc/mac. Don't let go of the home button until you see the restore screen.
