I rinsed the ring when I first got them to clean off the dust.
If you are talking about filter maintenance, I clean my filter once a month by rinsing the medias with the old tank water. Some will clean it every 2 or 3 month but that depends on your fish load, decaying leaf in the tank, filter size and so forth.

thinking of doing a DIY canister filter >.<
very interesting challenge, and i think if done nicely, would better some of the good MIC brands out there.

Really depends on your ability to source out cheap parts and whether you can get it right the first go tongue.gif. But im a DIY person, so the thrill of DIYing is where the fun is =D.

Gonna base my project on this two:

http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumap...ilter-step.html
http://www.bouzada.d2g.com/foro/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=50

Both project looks fantastic. Rough calculation, if get all the items should cost me about RM80-100. But i'll try to source parts here and there and keep the budget to about RM50. Pump would be some MIC pump, so if done properly, the weakest item would be the pump. I think if the canister body can be built properly, it would rival even Eheim's quality. But of course, the pump realibility, Eheim would definately win =D.

That looks a lot like anubias nana..

They don't do well being planted into the soil... Plants like anubias, bolbitis and ferns do not appreciate having their rhizomes planted!
