kings83 : Hmm....you might not be so right about that. HIIT is one of the many forms of cardio and there are others e.g. Turbulence Training. You might want to swap stories with some of the more senior body builders.

Let's just say

intense = less oxigen
less oxigen = protein is easier to break down than fat (muscle)

So, i dun do intense cardio.... only intense lifting.
I dun even run more than 20 mins. Instead, i run two 20 minutes sessions.
*
Actually, in one sense, if you are careful, you can prevent that process from happening.

The body makes energy by using blood sugar as fuel. But depending on whether it'a anaerobic or aerobic, you will either use blood sugar in the form of glycogen or glucose.

With HIIT, as long as you don't go beyond a certain time limit for the high intensity (I think it's 30-60 secs), your body won't get into the mode of breaking down muscle for fuel. You will need to also have that recovery period (45 - 65 secs? not sure).

The other thing about HIIT is that it keeps your body guessing and so you'll keep losing fat. All-around-body HIIT is very good for cardio. The reason it keeps your body guessing is that because you're both in an anaerobic and aerobic cardio, your body cannot adjust itself and so keeps your metabolic rate "high". Keeping only to anaerbic or aerobic for long periods will not give you fat loss but if you do both regularly d uring a workout, the body will keep guessing.

Check with Syd G and tengster. They know more about HIIT than I do.

Sprints last 10 secs, HIIT at least 15 mins

I think you need to read up on HIIT more. The HIIT duration in total is 15 min but the high intensity workout is only a small portion of the 15 min and in intervals. HIIT = high intensity INTERVAL training.

tengster : err... kings83 is not overweight lah. more like a bodybuilder.

skylive : well, put it this way. we only know one concept of weight loss but in today's world, there are more. I wouldn't easily dismiss the high carb diet in a cheat diet but since it's a STRATEGIC diet, it may be worthwhile having to look into.

It's like learning about the 10 different functions that a human liver is for, in secondary school. Medical students learn, if I remember correctly, 300 functions?

the premise on the cheat-eat diet is the leptin hormone which is something new to me as well. this is totally the opposite of theory of buidling up glycogen hormone which is a fat-releasing hormone and the counterpart to insulin hormone, the fat-storage hormone. going to do some reading about it.

danngunn : what they are talking about is rolled oats, not cooking oats. rolled oats are basically instant oats.

as for kolo-mee, i went hunting for healthier alternatives for noodles. currently trying out red-rice noodles. it's ok and i'm still on a weight loss.

everyone else : here is a quick overview on how your body gets energy for whatever activity you're doing :

http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/hormones/hungry.htm
http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/hormones/hungry_2.htm
http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/hormones/hungry_3.htm

However, I would suggest we keep an open mine about leptin because it's not so well-known how the entire process works and the long-term health effects. So, whatever you do, REMEMBER TO EAT YOUR VEGETABLES! Those are the food that cleans up the messes in your body.

Stop complaining in the forums and go to the doctor to get it fix. It should get better after a few days.

In the mean time, do some other kind of cardio.

Today : 10 min on treadmill walking. 15 min bicycle with alternate speeds.

Breakfast : homemade honey wheat bread + raisin and cream cheese.

Lunch : Red rice noodles (1/2 cup) with broccoli + carrot + onion + 3 tablespoon of mozzarella cheese.

Afternoon snack : 1 apple muffin, reduced sugar and salt

Dinner : Think the soup was a bit of a cheat eat. Fish bladder (and just realized it was deep fried) soup that came with cabbage. Ginger pork + mushroom. Stir fried cabbage. Bean+Rice mix : 2 tablespoon..

Dessert : Dragonfruit juice - ice blended.

Also, prepared my lunch for tomorrow : cajun pork. Bought the seasoning but shouldn't have put too much because it had too much salt in it. Eating this with a small salad of cucumber + cherry tomatoes with garnishing of deep fried shallots (not a lot. gulp!). Carbo source would be a piece of the honey wheat bread.

Hmm...breakfast probably a bowl of muesli with low fat milk.

Dinner : depends on what my granny is cooking for everyone.

Sometimes i feel u guys are being too.... technical...
you guys are champions when it comes to finding new names of exercises and acronyms...

end of the day, you don't need no fancy equipment like HRM (woot, acronyms).... as long as you run ur hardest, that is your Max heart rate.... all u need to know.

Sometimes u guys should just stfu and run...
too much reading, too little execution.
*
You ah, haven't change much from WoW Forums.

That little bit of reading help us to get to where we are and that includes bulking and cutting. Remember, you yourself said that you have weight problems and are yo-yoing.

So taking about 30 min to a few days just to gain a better understanding is nothing wrong. Better to have a correct foundation than ignorant. tongue.gif

I hope that at least here, you don't threaten people for a fight in RL.

synchun : It may be expensive yes but once you become more fit and hit plateaus, you find that there may be a need for better and closer monitoring of food and heart rate. But, the choice is up to you. People also buy HRM because the HRM on machines aren't always that realiable.

Anyone know if Isetan has nice bento boxes for sale in KL?

Nah... my knowledge is lightyears ahead of my progress...
That's why i stopped being active in HnF for awhile.

You know what happen? When you start reading too much BS, it can affect you. (there's contradictions, there always are contradictions)
Losing weight and/or gaining muscles takes time. But i find that ppl here read too much
and are constantly adjusting themselves bcos they are not losing/gaining fast enough.

They may be doing something right until they changed it cos a new research said so bla bla bla...
I think it's stupid. The fundamentals of exercising will never change. But people change too often too soon before they are able to reap anything out of it.
I always adopt the "STFU & Train" mentality.

And you can gain it back in less than 7 days if you want back to eating normally or cheat-eating with fast food and fried food. Whereas those of us who lose weight slowly and exercise at the same time wouldn't have this dramatic effect.

tengster : Err...about the T-shirt, thought I said that it's good enough to be put on a T-shirt? Youcould make money with it. brows.gif brows.gif

I think fast food is the best meal for me when I was on diet. Because every time I eat mcD, the next day I will lose at least half kg. But, I don’t think its work for all people because most of people getting fatter if they eat fast food. Maybe my stomach process differently compare to common people.

Btw, normally I do cardio at least 3 times a week plus 1 day for racquet sports.
*
Just have to be careful when eating fastfood for dieting. There is a new trend of cheat eats but it's more of moderation eating with strategic timing rather than long-term eating.

What you're doing is promoting the leptin hormone. Unfortunately, it's not that well understood atm so have to be careful of long-term health effects of taking too much fat into the body.

going to do HIIT later evening... missed yesterday's session due to rain!

myremi- if we cheat eating once a week is it ok? but of course with workout!
*
Hmm....if according to Precision Nutrition, it was 10% of your meals every week is cheat meals but in moderation.

My cheat meals is usually either fruit juice or sauteed fruits or one-two spoons of something fried.

But, I made the decision not to have boring meals. So, it's a combination of my Granny's cooking dinner + my lunch meals which I prepare every night in different ways after studying a lot of recipe sites on weight loss, diabetic cooking, etc.

Like today's lunch :
-1 piece of homemade honey wheat bread
-1 piece of pork (1/2 size of my palm) that was cook in Cajun Seasoning. Grilled.
-1/2 cup cherry tomatoes (always sweet) + 1/2 cup cucumber + sprinkling of deep fried shallots (yeah yeah deep fried but only a bit of onions)
-for carbo, i sometimes put couscous, bean+rice mix. Thinking of trying millet + quinoa - getting them this Saturday from the organic shop.

Dinner is usually :
-1 cup green veggie stir fried
-1/2 cup meat or fish - soup, grilled, stir fried, broiled
-2 spoonful of beans + rice mix

Breakfast is one of the options below :
-muesli + low fat milk
-wholemeal bread with cream cheese + tomato + cucumber

I keep a very strict diet of very low carbo else I can't lose weight. It's different from person to person.

DannGunn : I am currently planning to start making bento meals though. Can't resist the cute pictures.

I look up cooking sites regularly to get different ideas because the thought of eating boring food will make me lose my diet.

http://www.mum-mum.info

The last few posts for 2009 are mostly on what I've been eating. I've gotten better at it though. Some days it's a fish soup or veggie soup. Other days is a creamy soup casserole with meal and mostly veggie.

Ehhh, what do you mean by cheat eats?
*
Cheat eats = you're cheating on your diet by eating food that you're not suppose to. Like fried food, ice-cream, chocs, etc.

tengster : My carbo intake is lower than yours, I think. But yeah, need to build dem puny lady muscles to something more respectable. I tried the machines in the company gym and even 5 kg cannot do with chest press. Malu. blush.gif blush.gif

King83, u forget that it's hard to measure progress other than saying what we exercise since we can't weigh ourselves or check BF.

Yes, you did but then again, I've never known you to stick to rules, no? tongue.gif
