For living cost, you should know the answer already. Things are cheaper around UTHM, plus hostel provided as you mentioned. If you want to rent houses around Shah Alam, it's going to dry your wallet.
UTHM is just some 30-40 minutes away from my hometown too, lol. |

uthm is near to Kluang as well, I believe just around 30-40 mins can reach the Kluang town.
