In short, the degree program is about the science of large-scale food manufacturing, and how food is made so that it is safe, nutritious and meets consumers' needs, because eating and drinking are vital part of consumers' daily life. Nowadays, consumers are more conscious about the safety of products that come into contact with the food they eat, so-called food-grade products.

Therefore, as a future food technologist, you will be trained firstly in the full range of theoretical and practical aspects of food science to develop a greater understanding of the physical, microbiological and chemical makeup of food, and secondly on the technology of food such as processing, preservation, packaging, storing, and distribution to ensure that food is safe, nutritious, and wholesome, according to certain food contact standards, HALAL specifications and regulations.

You will apply your knowledge in all stages of food production from raw material harvesting until it reaches the consumer. You will examine the optimisation of food quality, quantity and processing, food safety and nutritional value, and means of production, processing, preservation, distribution and use. You will learn what happens to food when we consume it.

Graduates of the food technology stream find jobs in large food processing companies like Ajinomoto, Apollo, Cadbury, Dutch Lady Milk, F&N, Guan Chong (Cocoa), Hup Seng, HWA Tai, Nestlé, OCB (IbuMie), Oriental Food (Jacker), Pan Malaysia (Toblerone), PPB (Flour), QSR Brands (KFC, Pizza Hut, Ayamas), REX (canned food), Silver Bird (High5), Yeo's and the supergiant multinational conglomerate Mondelēz (formerly known as Kraft Food) in research and development, marketing or quality assurance roles.

The Malaysian Institute of Food Technology (MIFT) is a non-profit professional body of food technologists and educators in the field of food science and technology, and other individuals involved in areas of work closely related to food technology. The Malaysian Government has recognized MIFT as a professional body.

Founded in 1974, the MIFT has grown to over 400 members. The majority are Professional members who are managers, food scientist and technologists in the food industry, researchers in government and private institutions, educators in universities and colleges. Many of them are trained in food science and technology or related discipline such as chemistry, biochemistry and have relevant experiences in their application to food.
