QUOTE(JackLene @ Apr 17 2009, 11:29 PM) Roan is a type of coat color, black mix white(hence the greyish coat). Sheba guinea pig is a breed of semi long hair guinea pig, usually originating from Peruvian mixed with Abysinnian. Its a fancy name for a mix breed that looks like that lah |

If they are together since babies then they should not fight as long as there are no females nearby.

I use cat carrier to transport my GPs to vet.
Sometimes teeth trimming is needed if they are overgrown ma, don't blame yourself further for what happened. Complications with surgery happen now and then, sometimes also hard to say if its the vets fault. Keep us updated on how your GP is doing |

QUOTE(nzx10 @ Apr 20 2009, 01:11 PM) its been weeks since my last visit. You can try to pick out the GP and put her on your lap and pet her. After she settle down on your lap, give her a few small size treats like bits of carrot or rolled oats. Talk to her, pet her, feed her... sooner or later she will get used to you. I owned my GPs more than 1 year already but sometimes they still run away when I try to pat them in their cage but sometimes they are just fine with it. See mood I guess.... mostly I think they are ruled by their appetites kk, my gp girl's name is ming~~ in chinese writing is -冥- our relationship has not improve, everytime i wanted to pad her, she will avoid my hand, running around the cage, playing hide n seek with my hand~~ sigh that is i can't bring her out for flooring time, she will struggle if i try to lift her~ but she will wheek me for food if she sees me guys, any advice on bonding? juztiny~ i am not a very good owner~swt Added on April 20, 2009, 3:48 pm QUOTE(SugarCoatedCandy @ Apr 20 2009, 09:56 AM) Overgrown tooth is something that can be avoided by grazing activities In some cases they might break their top or bottom teeth due to chewing to hard on cage bars if they have that habit. Then the leftover teeth gets overgrown because of lack of grinding with the broken teeth. If like that then no choice but to trim the teeth until the broken teeth grow back. I have had cases where my pets teeth never grew back after being broken though Sometimes they will pee or poo there.. There are some that treat hay as sort of their bedding ><; GP eating their poo is also normal. The toilet you can try putting some hay inside there too, and at the same time pick all his poo that is not inside the litter box and put it inside there.. See if he wants to utilize it. It takes time to actually toilet train them.. Took me many months too This post has been edited by jaswwp: Apr 20 2009, 03:48 PM |

Not sure... but with my pets, I found out the hard way that its better to trim it early... one of my pets, the teeth was extremely overgrown coz I was hoping she could grind them down herself after the 1st few trimmings. Ends up when I finally tried to trim it, she accidently bit herself with those long teeth when she struggle and her mouth was bleeding all over.
Its probably for the vet to decide how long is too long I guess. |

Just check out any pet shops. As long as the GP have no fungus/parasites on them its safe to buy. I would say that 80% of pet shop guinea pigs are infested by parasites or skin disease. Make sure to check properly before buying.

Try not to buy Delikate for GP, I think it has those hamster food inside (nuts/ seeds) which is really not part of a Guinea Pigs diet. Delikate seems to provide very similar food for all types of animals which I think is the reason the price is cheap.

QUOTE(JackLene @ Apr 23 2009, 12:32 PM) weLL even at home oso can get infected LOLs .. i just don't get it why mites infestation is so common among GPs... I think I read somewhere that most GP have dormant mites, then living condition will determine if they come out to infect the skin badly or not. Those GP in some pet shop have more than mites though, they have BIG BIG kutus on them!neaRLy eveRy1's GP's heRe kena b4 rite? even the vet wiLL say haRd to deteRmine where the mites come from... |

QUOTE(mr.hikano @ Apr 23 2009, 12:33 PM) thankz for ur suggestion...pet lover center a.k.a pet safari at sunway piramid is way better then pet safari at ikano... and their GP looks healthy tho... GP with white/black fur is easy to see the parasites. On black fur, the eggs of the parasites can be seen clearly. On white fur, you can see the parasites themselves moving (geli! ) For the skin disease thing , look at their ears and eyes area if got like dandruff or flaky skin. Then for the body, see if got any areas thats balding until can see the skin. (Note that most GPs are bald in a small area directly behind the ear. That one is normal)Added on April 23, 2009, 12:34 pm maybe i need learn about skin disease and parasites first... |

If not mistaken I think its mainly for lice. Mites I think they use Ivermectin jab to cure it, coz mites can live under the skin, but lice is on top.

QUOTE(CKW008 @ Apr 23 2009, 07:57 PM) Ivermectin also can be taken orally oso.. my GPs once got mite prb and taken Iver orally to cure it.. i juz dunwan my gps to have a jab as my 1st gp died becoz of it.. Yes, Hagen pellets don't contain good ingredients. If you want to switch to better brand you can go for Kaytee or Cavia Complete although in my opinion Oxbow is still the best. I used to buy it from Singapore but now its available in KL. for skin those flakes prb.. my gps are cured by using anti-fungus shampoo.. actually for dog.. but the vet recommend me to use as she use on her rabbit and still ok.. juz nid to dilute the shampoo.. so tat not so concentrated as GPs skin are not as thick as doggies.. omg.. i am feeding mine Hagen since they were bought..!! pls show some links c c... about the long term consumption.. really got bad effect?/ |

QUOTE(colincsf @ Apr 24 2009, 11:24 AM) Thanks Jacklene. I started to panic just now...wondering should I continue feeding them or not...what I am pretty sure is going to make a cage like a member here....it is really cool...how come in a pair sure one of it will bully the weaker one? mine they took turn to teasing each other....they was chasing around the cage until my bf's dog barking at them to stop...aggressive piggies...My gps likes to scare the babysitter always do that when I am not around...they will wheek and chasing around. When calm them down they will start to purring...then one of them will just lying down for you to massage the body...amboi sedap la tu~~ WHen I bought my 2 girls, they used to fight also. The bigger one always chase and bully the smaller sized one. It got quite bad at one point. Later on I upgrade their cage to a bigger one (C&C Cage) and they stopped fighting. I guess it was more of a space issue. The bigger one doesnt want to share her space. |

QUOTE(chabbywabbit @ Apr 24 2009, 01:51 PM) hummmm are they allowed to sell gp aged only 2 months old in pet shops? i got nubby when he was 3-4 months old.. 2 months old is OK age for GP to be sold. They are born fully developed, unlike other rodents, so actually by 6 weeks old they no longer need milk already. |
