QUOTE(anfieldude @ Jan 7 2011, 05:45 PM) Actually, I was in to hi-fi for the past 20years...I only recently came into HT about 3 years ago. For me, music is priority...I have run thru my series of amps and speakers from university days, from my very 1st amp the Luxman (that my friend still uses till this very day - almost 25 yrs old (hand me down.) Have you heard a properly set up Planar speaker like those Electrostatic or Magnaplanar speaker? Depending on type of music, they sounded very differently from box speaker and can be additive to some people.

QUOTE(htkaki @ Jan 8 2011, 07:50 AM) Electrostatic spkr normally using a bigger ribbon or only ribbon to produce sounds is really nice if properly setup. It does not have the 'boxy' sound (sorry dont know the correct term). I have auditioned many of these even the Apogee Duetta Signature. Very impressive indeed! AFAIK, while both are planar in nature, Electrostatic and Magnaplanar uses different technology and while I have heard a few of the later, I don't have the opportunities to hear the former. And yes, your description is correct, by not having boxes, these Planar speaker do not have 'box sound' or 'box' coloration and to my ears, much more relaxing to listen to.

QUOTE(htkaki @ Jan 8 2011, 10:27 PM) I get to listen to this 'ribbon speaker' almost everyday Ha, that shows you are not into head banging music. IMO, maintenance/repair etc of these things may be a problem in our tropical climate with the ribbon peeling off the Mylar.

QUOTE(car_o_scope @ Jan 9 2011, 10:16 AM) I think you are confused between electrostatic and ribbon speakers. Ribbon voice coil are glued to Mylar diaphragm and the whole thing move as a single piece to produce music. And these ribbon often came undone and become detached from the Mylar over time/heat/humidity. Have to be glued back.

QUOTE(klimal @ Jan 11 2011, 06:22 PM) Paiseh, paiseh...my set not even mid range, <10k I think for a small room and for vocal, a low wattage cheap China made tube amplifier + decent CD Player + bookshelf easy to drive speaker could be done for less than 10K.

QUOTE(mikapoh @ Jan 17 2011, 03:02 PM) Beginning of new year, and already added Naim Audio kits into the family. Below sharing my Entry-level and humble 2-in-1 set-up, HT cum Hifi. [attachmentid=1999859] [attachmentid=1999862] [attachmentid=1999867] I don't get it. While I am sure this setup will perform fine for HT but IMO, you have not fully explore what these equipments could do when it comes to Hi Fi stereo playback. It's like buying a HDTV and using it for Standard Definition program. In Hi Fi, one of many desirable thing is soundstage imaging of which my guess is, this setup has minimal from the way you placed your speakers. IMO, these equipments could perform much better when it comes to soundstaging than what you are getting now. My 2 sen. This post has been edited by Optiplex330: Jan 18 2011, 06:59 AM

QUOTE(mikapoh @ Jan 18 2011, 09:08 AM) Bro, advice me how to place the spkrs then Well, if I were put away my HT set-up I would have placed the spkrs these way too. They are 2-feet from rear wall and 3-feet from side. Well, some would like to locate their spkrs much forward. I find mine is ok as long as it does not produce boomy bass. So far, imaging has been well floating in between and instruments like drums are from back wall, well extended the wall, thanks to the capability of Naim. Care has been taken to angle the spkr so that imaging is right dead on center. Sorry, I don't use box speakers so am a newbies with box speaker's placement. But I had visited Hi Fi kaki's room and I hardly see them place it the way you do, hence my earlier comment. But if you were to google, you will find huge numbers of article on this subject. Most of the time, what is best for stereo reproduction aren't exactly what the Misses wanted for aesthetic reason. http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=ins...d=26&pagestringhttp://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/sp...rplacement.html

QUOTE(mikapoh @ Jan 18 2011, 09:41 AM) htkaki, one thing for sure when you bring in these Triangle speakers is they seem to lure more audiophiles than AV kaki . It will be my best interest to see a Naim combo to drive up these speakers, especially the entry level one. My Naim Int amp/cdp have been running in couple of days, and the sound is getting warmer and more opener each day! I slowly get to feel Naim's true characteristic as it communicates music as lively as possible as a whole. It is just like a group of band performing live in front of you. Every instruments have pace and space in between. When I first spin the cdp, I thought the cd is spinning faster than my previous NAD! There is a sense of high & low sound wave (not flat) which make any cd listening a thrill. I know ProAc pair well with them but wont hesitate to open door to Triangle. We shall see. WongKN is a fan of ribbon speakers. Our boxy stuff won;t suite him anyway. The last time I heard a Naim many years ago, it has great rhythm and pace and make you want to get up and dance. But soundstage is 2 dimensional, no depth at all so no 3-D soundstage. So how's Naim nowadays?

QUOTE(mikapoh @ Jan 18 2011, 10:59 AM) They say Naim is well known for its timing and rhythmic performance. Yes, I can feel it and enjoy the music piece as a whole while maintaining the sonic performance. For soundstaging it has depth too but I still believe others may fare much better in 3D feel like. It just presents music as closely to a live band you can imagine. My previous Cyrus amp is more masterful when comes to deep soundstage. Guess there is always a character for each hifi brand to present their kind of music. Like they say, either you love the naim sound or you dislike it. Ya, can't have everything. For me for HT, soundstage is not so important but for music I wanted wide & DEEP soundstage and panel speaker can be very very good at that.

QUOTE(ronaldkwok @ Jan 28 2011, 11:32 AM) I think this will also qualify as part of my HT setup. For my 60th birthday, the wifey bought for me an exclusive permanent Gold Class seat (admit one only) for my BD viewing pleasure; how sweet of her! See, it is even diamond studded that looks like plastic! This is a far cry from my previous 3rd class seat that I bought for myself, sigh. Just leave it to the ladies to do the shopping. You are free to copy the photo (the first one or the second one, depending on your wish) to show to your wife or gf as suggetion for Valentine Day's gift. Good luck. There is definitely a set up for private shows. But I was wondering, where is the wife going to sit? There is only 1 chair. On your laps? How sweet and romantic. Hope your legs can take it for the entire 2 hours movies show.

QUOTE(ronaldkwok @ Jan 28 2011, 06:34 PM) Ha, ha, that is my main problem. I am forced to exercise and climb over to the other side! Actually this is only part of my study room; the seat is placed in the aisle between my book shelves. That is why it is exclusive! Every available space is occupied by bookshelves! Not bad for a 60 years old. Still got the agility to climb up and down.

QUOTE(ronaldkwok @ Jan 29 2011, 03:38 PM) Sabar lah, bro, sabar, everything comes to those who can wait! About the damping effect of the books and bookshelves, it suits me fine since I am no great fan of heavy bass. On bass. Some like it heavy for head banging. I liked it if it's tuneful and truthful. Not necessary the same thing.
