Have you heard a properly set up Planar speaker like those Electrostatic or Magnaplanar speaker? Depending on type of music, they sounded very differently from box speaker and can be additive to some people.

Electrostatic spkr normally using a bigger ribbon or only ribbon to produce sounds is really nice if properly setup. It does not have the 'boxy' sound (sorry dont know the correct term). I have auditioned many of these even the Apogee Duetta Signature. Very impressive indeed!

AFAIK, while both are planar in nature, Electrostatic and Magnaplanar uses different technology and while I have heard a few of the later, I don't have the opportunities to hear the former.

And yes, your description is correct, by not having boxes, these Planar speaker do not have 'box sound' or 'box' coloration and to my ears, much more relaxing to listen to.

Ha, that shows you are not into head banging music. IMO, maintenance/repair etc of these things may be a problem in our tropical climate with the ribbon peeling off the Mylar.

I think you are confused between electrostatic and ribbon speakers.

Ribbon voice coil are glued to Mylar diaphragm and the whole thing move as a single piece to produce music. And these ribbon often came undone and become detached from the Mylar over time/heat/humidity. Have to be glued back.

You must be referring to Martin Logan of yesteryears. Heard a lot of issues but the current models are better in terms of durability.

It would be above RM10K for a midrange avr, 5 speakers and a sub.

I think for a small room and for vocal, a low wattage cheap China made tube amplifier + decent CD Player + bookshelf easy to drive speaker could be done for less than 10K.

laugh.gif My bad.

Try to use check out Belden

Very good value. But, it sounds a bit bright. Not suitable if you have a quite bright system.

Hi All,

Newbie here... I just got Onkyo TX-SR608 av amp as a gift but no speakers.

Is it ok, for me just to get 2 bookshelf speakers or 2 floor stand speakers for it? Could I customize the setting to suit only 2.1 rather than 7.1?

Tried searching for the info but no clear answer...

Please advise.

Thanks in advance

You can use 2.1 or even as stereo. No problem at all.

Guys...

Need some advise here...

Im using Denon AVR 1600 couple with Pioneer MS500 series speaker.

1. Is there any cable out there that I can use as HDMI cable to plug in to my Amp? Or there is no other way than buying new Amp? take note that Denon AVR 1600 only have coaxial & optical input output only
2. Speaker wire is so 90's (yet Im still using it) especially for the rear speaker. Is there any way or gadget that can use my speaker to connect to the amp wireless?
3. After bought the speaker in 2007, I still cannot find any woofer that can match my speaker, any advise? Im looking for lower than 300W woofer. Last time I use the Altec Lansing 2.1 speaker which I use as woofer. Nice! but not appropriate ei...

Thanks for the help

Cheers!
