Hi,

I heard that the UK Working Holiday Maker Visa is open for Malaysian start from last year. Any one know about this visa? How to apply? Any one have apply before?
shackks
Yes, Mine was approved a few weeks ago.
tishaban
This type of visa is available from several countries. Do some legwork, google and you'll get all the information you need. It's better than asking here and getting partial info.

MeGaN
i thought this programme has been closed for a while..coz too many applicants to handle before...it's reopen again ???
shackks
yes. it was reopen early last year.
MeGaN
how much is the application fee now?
shackks
afaik, the application fee was revised to RM14xx effective 1st April.

So what kind of question they will ask during interview?
shackks
they'll ask:
Why are u going to the UK?
Which part of UK will u intend to go?
Will you be working over there? <- U shud know that you are not supposed to work more than 1 year with the WHV.
How much will you be bringing to UK?
and something like that.

do you homework well on places to go all around UK and make sure your travelling route makes sense and the WHV will be urs.

cheers.

In my plan, i have write down that i will travel to others European country as well. that's mean i have to known all the places that i will travel in other countries also?
rclxub.gif
shackks
no... But you'll have to tell them briefly where will you be going too, either in the midst of your Visa or at the end of your WHV. What they priorities is your stay in UK. They wan to be sure that you're well prepared and you will not be using their public funds no matter what happens.

And, they'll see if your "travel route" is feasible or not.

cheers.

ya.. im thinking to apply it too.. but shackks did u found yr job in uk? or else where will u b staying?
shackks
sorry to say, u won't be given a heck if you do no have a valid working visa to work in UK. therefore, I'm still in the process of applying for a job there. It's a hard world in UK where jobs are in concern.

As for accomodation, It actually depends on the work I've got then only I search for accomodation. Accomodation might be easier as there's always plenty of spare room for rent depending where you are.

Do apply. Travel around while you are still young...

cheers.

so actually u going to travel around Uk and at the same time workinG?> nice...im thinking bout backpacking around europe after i graduate next year too. but anyway..good to start plan from now!! but the Visa might require you to bring certain amonut of money to cover your few month expenses and living cost there..isnt it? and do we need to show them the return ticket? or its ok to show just one way ticket?
shackks
yes, they actually wud require a return ticket so that or an alternative way is to show you have more than enough money to not only spends a few months there and also to buy a return ticket.
jasontmh
Was there for 2 years and been back for 1 yr+ already. The last time I apply was only RM200+ only. No need interview somemore. Anyway, was working at Taypack potatoes in Dundee, Scotland for almost 2 yrs. Good working enviroment but manual work. You must be fit.... smile.gif Google taypack potatoes and you'll have more info. Accomodation provided, internet access, tv, kitchen, bath, pingpong too... or go to Adecco or any other job agencies. Doubt you'll get an office work there, believe me I've tried, unless you are doctor or senior manager/engineer(you know what I mean la) http://www.taypack.com/taypackpotatoes/company.htm

bro,
do u pay any taxes there while u're working? did u work throughout the 2 years or on and off before you come back.

please advice.

thanx
simchi
shackks .. why are you still here back in malaysia ? thought your visa approved ?
jasontmh
Oh. I do pay taxes. They are automatically calculated weekly. My pay will deduct every week and end of the yr, if you earn less, you'll get some money back. For me, I work kau kau la... but travel 3 times a yr lo...I moved from places to places also. Still got some frenes who doesn't wants to come back, they apply for a full/part time course.
simchi
hello jasontmh , how much do you get paid while working for taypack ?
jasontmh
it depends on how long you work bro... they pay by the hours. Weekly if you are hardworking, you'll get 300 after deduction of taxes and accomodation. But think now they have stop giving much work coz the sales now a bit slow....

The pay is not bad ..and the accomodation & its facilities look great from the website , more valuable than the 40 pounds you pay weekly .

I was going to apply for the visa on March ..but then delayed due to my exams on the end of May , so no point applying so early but now the application fee has jacked up to RM1.4k ... bah . Anyway will see how it goes next month .

I would like to know whether with working holidaymaker's visa, can we find professional work under contract basis? for example accounting or auditing job? Thanks
Hean
I'm new to this. So this working visa, is a visa which legally lets u travel and work at UK for 6 months? Like a working permit d?
jasontmh
This visa is perfectly legal but now u can only work for a year only instaed of the previous, 2 yrs. With that visa, you can get any job provided they wanna hire you la...One of my frene, got employed as a programmer, got 5 yrs visa and monthly bout 2000 plus pound.... The accomodation at taypay was alrite. 40 pound a week...goood bargain, no need to take bus to work. you stay next to the factory only. But Taypack is in Dundee, Scotland. Third largest city in Scotland besides Glasgow and Edinburgh. If you wanna study, theres aa Abertay University. Some of my frne study there. Google it and you'll get a rough idea.
It was my frene who reco me to go to Taypack. She also heard fr frene. There's plenty of foreigner there, from Czech, South Africa, Poland....You'll get to know many frenes... smile.gif
shackks
Jason,
U fly from here to Scotland straight or to London first?

This visa is for u to take a long holiday in their country and the purpose of working is for u to get funding to carry on ur holiday. So, working is perfectly legal if within the given period, which is half of the visa.
jasontmh
I fly to Manchester, there's an airport there. Nearear to Scotland, then from there, I took a bus to Dundee. But there's an airport at Glasglow and Edinburgh. You can take a flight straight to there. Up to you. Leeds is a good place to go to also...
shackks
thanx dude... u've shown me a new lead to study... notworthy.gif

notworthy.gif thanx...
btw, where's ur location? JB?
jasontmh
Yup. Don't have to bring too much clothing. Yuo can buy some over there. It's quite cheap over there...
shackks
aahz, thatz one very helpful info... thanx dude. never thought of that.

other than scotland, have u went to other place to work or tour?
jasontmh
Been to guilford(small town) work in a nursery garden, liverpool(chinese takeaway)...holiday...hmmm went to a few, Switzerland,Italy, rome, venice, florence, prague, france, manchester, london, portsmouth, leeds, birmingham, glasgown, edinburgh, wales. There's more you should go la...EG: Amsterdam, Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Spain(Barcelona) and Athen. Pretty cheap to travel around and please arrange in advance. Book your hotel/youth hostel, train ticket, bus, flights. Normally I would sleep overnight at the airport and catch the earliest flight. Cheaper that way. smile.gif
shackks
Do you have any problems at the custom checkpoint after u arrive UK. If u dun mind me askin, how much money did u bring to UK?

cheers.
simchi
how much you planning to bring eh shackks ?
d3stiny
i think the hardest is to show the return ticket. since we r there in Uk i dont think i willjust fly back msia straight after that. i will love to travel around Europe at the same time. they might be hard to show the exact date we r leaving from UK lo. also $$$ matter too. how much do we need to bring at least to cover 1 o 2 months of our living expense there?

jason: do u mean that your fren apply for full time student/ working visa after the holiday working visa in UK? does that allow that? im think bout that too, if i feel ok with everything ther ei might thinking settle down and work or continue studying smile.gif
shackks
So, anyone in the midst of applying this Visa?

This I agree. Therefore, it's important to know where you'll be going next so that you know how much to cover your expense at least, that can convince the customs officer. However, according to my gf, there's ppl who actually brings in less than GBP300 and still manage to enter although they don't have a return ticket. Thatz coz they have friends and relatives in there.

And the price difference a one way and a return ticket is RM1790(one-way) and RM3600(return with a one year validity). It's almost double leh... imagine wat can u do with the other RM1790... thatz abt GBP2xx after convert.

can we apply for a student visa without coming back to UK? afaik, we have to come back to apply for the working permit.

shackks: Sorry for the late reply. Was outstation. Brought along only 300 pound only bro. That is provided you could find a job witihn a month or better get a job 1st before you reach there. Get a frene who is in UK to find a job 1st. The custom will not ask how much you bring. They'll only question you where u stay, who are you staying with? Please make sure you do not have a "gangsta" hair / and for ladies:prefeable do not dye ur hair. They'll have the impression tht asean white gold hair are prostitute. Believe me coz I went with my frene and they question her.... Please make sure you do know someone there and the full address and possible tel no.

d3stiny: when u r in Uk already, 2 -3 months b4 it expires, just go to any college/U to apply for a student visa. My frene did not come back to malaysia to apply for that. Straight at UK. Unless you are applying for a working permit "thing", then you are required to come back to M'sia. Some of my frene just apply for a "dummy" college-then took English course doing part time and drag the course for 1-2 years.

When I went to UK, I only bought a one way ticket. The price coming back to malaysia from UK also about the same. Please book in advance.2 months the best to get a good rate. You see... previously mine was for 2 years(Visa). I have the excused for buying a 1 way ticket. Maybe if not(1 year working) then no excuse la to buy a 1 way. But then you can always tell them that you want to buy a 1 way coz you'll be holidaying around in Europe and your last destination is not UK say France, then you got excuse la coz flying back to M'sia from France.

Take care guys and gals and be safe. Let me know if you need anything!

Added on April 26, 2007, 9:44 amEdit: Even if they ask why u bring so little... Say la, scared to bring so much cash, later family will TT lo....But having a medical check up in the airport is normal.

No worries... Thanx for the detailed explanation and that really helps. That's very daring of u to go to a foreign land with only GBP300, hehe... I'm thinking whether a GBP500 wud be sufficient.

Aniwae, my current concern (or worries shud be a proper word) is abt jobs... Till date, there's no reply to any job I've applied to via various job agency or directly to the employer. As I understand, they dun "waste time" on applicant who still not in UK yet... Thus, really hopes to get one before I board my plane to UK...

Aniwae, when u're free... wanna have a cuppa sometime? me in JB area. where're u staying?

d3stiny,
if u really have plans of going to UK as soon as possible, then do make proper plans beginning now... there's lots of things to settle and first and foremost, the evident of financial support u have... u gotta produce a evidence of a solid financial backing before they wud issue u a visa...

Having a Fixed Deposit which the deposit date is very near to the application date is not good as they may see it as a fraud or whateva which may not be legit, or implies that the $$ in the FD is not ur own.

best of luck... wink.gif

Convey my congratz to ur, sista...

Has she opened a bank account in UK yet? Advice her to open one now before she reached UK shore as opening an account with a UK bank aren't that easy as wat we get in UK... They need hell lotsa requirements n that cud be a hassle and drag from days to weeks.

HSBC passport is the best option. Visits here to learn more abt the account.
